Carlton pushes recruit button
Quote:
Swann said yesterday the Blues had no specific development coaches this year but would expand their football department next year.

"It will be pretty similar (to Collingwood's academy)," he said. "I think the model that works is that you recruit them through a good network of recruiting and when you get them to your club you develop them as quickly as you can.

"That needs to be a specific job. What happens is once the season starts the coaches concentrate on the week-to-week and sometimes the development gets left behind, so you need someone who all day, every day is thinking about developing your players."

Swann confirmed Irish rookie Aisake O'hAilpin, 21, would be elevated to the senior list next year, after recent season-ending groin surgery.

The Blues have backed in recruit Cain Ackland to justify his lucrative three-year contract, with ruck coach Gary Dempsey confident he can become a dominant ruckman

Development - just one more piece of the puzzle we have been missing.

Congrats to Aisake, and it's great to hear that Dempsey will still be at the club next year too.

Everyone has been disappointed by Ackland and there is no doubt that he deserved to be dropped. I think his attitude has been ordinary as well (the tv shot of him laughing after the Freo game said a lot). But in fairness to him, he is not without talent and was pretty good yesterday in the magoos. There is no point paying him out or forgetting him for the next 2 1/2 years. He is relatively young and we are best served working to get the best out of him. He did play some ok footy for St Kilda at times.

The club has already put on an additional recruiter and has player-manager Gerard Sholly scouting Ireland for recruits, after the success of imports Setanta and Aisake O'hAiplin.

You forgot this bit. Someone mentioned it the other day but I wasn't able to spill the beans. They have a few lads in their sights already.
