Just watched the whole address on AFL.com. Emotional plea to the players to honour the club and its history. Then talked about Melbourne's strength which was their run and use of the ball. Implored his players to bottle it up, keep the ball in the scrimmage, tackle hard and chase hard. Said we could hurt them because defensively they rank 2nd worst in inside 50s against so asked his players to use the ball smart into the F50. Use the lines and get the ball in efficiently.

Basically in one ear and out the next for most of the team. For those who think Pagan is not the solution, think again. If players carry out the coaches instructions and still lose fair enough but Pagan is talking to a brick wall at the moment. Accontability was what he was asking for

Telling a team to tackle hard and chase hard, f%^& this Dennis is a genious. I'm sure all clubs once they get hold of these masterstroke instructions will be better for it.

So you think if he was telling them differently that they would listen????  He was doing the right thing...The players just didn't listen...Plus, the problem with all of this is that the players can't even do the basics right...ie. chasing/tackling hard, hitting targets etc...So how is giving them a more complicated game plan going to help....

That is the concern - if the majority of the players arent listening to the coach then it would suggest that he has lost the players

Lost the players. They just come off a season where they exceeded expectations then won the pre season comp. When did he lose them.

Game, obviously the address doesnt go through the intricasies of the game plan. Its a motivation speech. But as previously said these are basic requirements and if the players cant even do that they should ask themselves what theyre doing in the AFL

Spot on buzzaaaah. If he spent the pre-match address telling each player what his particular tasks were that day, he would be sacked as incompetent.

During the week, you'd expect that each player is given a tape containing footage of his opponent with specific advice about what to expect and how to counter this. Assistant coaches and Pagan would talk to most, if not all, of the players. There would be team meetings about the team goals and strategies for the coming week, and training would give some opportunity to put this into practice. And you would expect that the different teams within teams (e.g. forwards, backs and midfielders) would discuss the upcoming match both with the relevant assistant coaches and amongst themselves.

The pre-match address needed to inspire the team to show some intensity in the first quarter. Our first quarters have been appalling. I would have thought that there wasn't much more Pagan could do in this regard. It seemed to result in a roar which suggested that it had the desired effect. But it isn't Pagan's fault that the team failed to maintain that intensity and showed minimal levels of skill and commitment to the game plan that you would expect at an AFL level.

And knowing it was going to be taped by the media, you might also think that Pagan would have made sure that specific information about tactics and strategies would have been stripped from his speech in any event.

Surely none of us would like Pagan to tell the media of our tactics ahead of the game?

Heard Terry Wallace comment on this. He says he does not address his players at all pre-match. It's all done during the week.

Is that why Denis lost to Melbourne by less than Wallace?????

Look Denis is an old fashoned no frills coach.
He hasnt lost the players because we dont have many real players....

He hasnt lost the kids.. the kids are just rapt to play footy.
If hes lost anyone...,they will get lost come the end of the year...

Oh, im sure im not needed....

I cant wait for this club to have the kind of list and leaders that will begin really taking us forward.
Denis is about keeping your head over the ball... effort and running hard.
thats easy to follow for blokes with too little skill... you would think.
Unfortunately when the team has little skill and is low in the effort stakes youre just not going to win many games.

I heard him say he speaks to his players then leaves them alone for about an hour.
He then has a quick word before they go out.

I believe he was saying Leigh Mathews doesnt speak to his players prior to going out BW.

Slightly changing the subject, the pre-match address wa all a set up anyway. I'm sure all that stuff was just for the cameras rather than agenuine pre match

Denis lost to Melbourne by less than Wallace because Melbourne took the foot off the pedal. We should have lost by 80 again.

I think Denis might be trying to dumb it down a little so they understand.

Any players the coach has lost are probably playing for the Bullants already and won't be here next season, that I do agree with.
