If Earl Spalding can go from a basket case in front of goals, to one of the more reliable kicks on goal in his time at our club, then any of the guys on our list should be able to do likewise given the way coaching has changed in the last 15 years or so.

No excuses.

Even Fev's kicking has been a let down..................

But come to think of it, you tell me one kid that has an effective kick??

I'll give you a hint, his last name is GIBBS!

Now i'm pretty sure (and i could be wrong) that's because he has only been with the club for half a year and has yet to adapt that 'loosing' feelling and Pagan hasn't quite crushed his confidence and self belief.

It was when i saw Murphy's kicking letting him down early in the year when i came to this conclusion.

I watch MM quite a bit when he played for Oakleigh & Metro.......Never sprayed a kick and was always VERY reliable.

Then he comes to Carlton and within one year, he starts showing signs of those skills fading.

A similar situation happened with Nick Stevens.................who at Port was regarded as one of the best kicks in the AFL.
Then he comes to Carlton and it all changes.

Kicking is something i'm facinated with.....................

There are litterally hundreds of ways you can hold the ball, drop from a certain height, lean over more, lean back more, get closer/further away from the man on the mark, etc, etc, etc.

Technique after technique after technique.............................

I seriously don't think there is a right or wrong way to kick that Sherrin..............just see Setanta for god sake. None of us were even slightly confident when he was kicking for goal..................except him! And that's why they went through.

Setanta has EASILLY the highest and strongest Self-Belief with himself and his surroundings, and that's why DESPITE his awkward stance, gripp, whatever he continues to show effective results.

It's all above your shoulders............................ Simple as that.

Back to Gibbs..............i can certainly see his almost flawless effective rate dropping if we continue on with Pagan next year. Because, as so many players have done before him, he too will start to question his confidence and self-belief.

These kids need to start believing in themselves again. ALL OF THEM DO, not just a couple here and there.

Ever noticed how brilliant our skills were in both our recent Wizard Cup / NAB Cup wins? It's amazing what that winning feeling does to you................So much positivity!

PRENDA KICKING A 60MTR SUPERGOAL FOR GOD SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway............just my two cents +gst, blah blah blah............have a good day everybody!

Do we have anyone who works with the forwards to help them with their goal kicking... if not, we should as its an area that we obviously need to vastly improve on..

It's not a physical thing, it's all mental. 9.9/10 they'd kick those goals at training, yet they'd only get say 4/10 from the same position with the pressure of the game on their shoulders.

We need someone who can help our boys focus. It's a bit like walking on a 6" plank of wood on the ground - you'd walk across it without a stumble every time. Lift it up 10 feet and see the difference.

Put it across the grand canyon and you really sh1t yourself, yet it's the same plank of wood.

..you can fast track the process, with hour after hour of repition.. ..they train and train and train just like all the truely commited, professional atheletes/sports people train.. ..honestly, how many hours a week do they actually train/hone their skills, vs weights/fitness regimes..??..

They need lessons in how to block out the outside pressures and concerntrate on the things that get the job done. The slightest change in run or ball drop will see it spray. Probably just a matter of experience and confidence which will all come with time.

It would be nice if we could fast track the process.

Well, I play footy myself, and I usually play as a forward, and I know for a fact that sometimes you have a lot of pressure on you to kick the goal.
I think a lot of it has to do with backing yourself, if you know you can kick the goal, go for it, but if you have it on the boundary line deep or the kick will really test your distance, then it's better to kick it to a player in a better position rather than kick and hope for the best.

You've also got to remain poised and calm under pressure. It's these things that cause errors in front of goals. When I'm playing and I have a set shot, I usually find it good to pick something behind the goals, and aim for it.
It's understandable to be missing shots on goal when it's pouring rain, (with the ball being wet and all) or when you're kicking into the wind, but when the conditions are perfect, you should be kicking at least 80% of the goals. It's these basic things, poise, confidence, backing yourself, unselfish play, that end up getting the goal in the end.
