yeah, sure Indie.
but we're not talking about ben cousins here (the guy chris judd emplored to share the podium with him on grand final day), we're talking about brendan fevola, the guy that the playing list refused to endorse as captain for a week, despite him clearly being our best player.
that is crystal clear evidence that the players had/have a problem with fevola's attitude. and when your coach backs such a player over the rest of the list, well... you don't have to be Einstein to figure out how that's going to affect esprit de corps.
Don't be hung up on the vote for captaincy.
As with Aker, a player might be seen as a squeaky wheel but be accepted by the coaching staff and other players as being an elite player who can help the team win. As far as I can tell, he was never invited onto the podium by Michael Voss, and never went within cooee of a leadership role.
Fraser Gehrig is another example. Strangely enough, Capuano, Steven Lawrence and he were in a tight group whose behaviour caused the coaches quite a bit of concern. But only Lawrence and Capuano were sacked. Gehrig remained because he was an elite power forward. I'm sure that model citizens like Harvey rolled their eyes at some of his antics. To a lesser degree, Milne was hardly a great team man, but he added something that the team would have thought was worthwhile.
I'm sure that the players might roll their eyes at some of Fev's antics. But there wouldn't be many on our list who don't regard him as a special player with rare match-winning capabilities. And most players would accept that his genius inevitably will result in him being treated differently to honest battlers. Let's face it - full-forwards have tended to be whackers, not only at AFL level but in lower grades as well.
