Wild conspiracy theory time
It was rumoured that Pratt and Swann had talked to Voss (although Swann denied this). Voss says that he's definately ready to coach and that he has a support team picked out. That sounds pretty organised and pretty advanced.
We lose Whitnall indefinately, we now lose Fev indefinately, both somewhat of our own choosing it seems. It's 13 weeks in and we'd need to win 6 of 9 for Pagan to meet Pratt's preseason target of 10 wins.
That's the background, the theory is this. Pratt and Swann reviewed the club in the break after the Hawthorn mess, and made plans. They've laready stitched up Voss for next year, and Voss wants them to send a message to the playing group. He also wants to see what the youngsters will do.
We've assessed that we are a fair way away still and we want the PP. Pagan is still trying to hang on, so we start to set the rules (eg suspending Fev), forcing the selection of kids. Pagan has no choice but to accept. Given the amount of kids we'll be playing, the lack of Fev and the playing group not playing for the coach, it's likely that this approach will net us the PP. Voss might be too much of a risk that the players will come together and play for him in the first game and snatch a win. It also allows him to finish his media contract and not have a conflict of interest while still being on Brisbane's playing list.
In this (very unlikely!) scenario, we have the coach for next year in place already and are taking the long-term view by trying to not too overtly tank and get the PP. Trading Fev for an experienced (though still youngish) player plus a pick gives us a decent player + 4 picks in the top 20-25 and a great platform for the future.
It will be interesting to see if some of the more established players get the arse this week and we play some young kids!!!
