I think that it was a very wise decision by the Club. We have been too slow to react to players that just aren't giving 100% each week. This leads to cancer in that if one guy doesn't give his all then why should the rest, then when the blowtorch come on the players they start playing the blame game because no-one could remember who was the first to slack off. This is going to send a message to the whole playing group that even if you are the best player, you are not entitled to an automatic place in the side - you have to EARN it.
On another note, I get the feeling that there is more here than meets the eye and perhaps there may be more issues with Fev coming our way...

Every other club in the AFL knows exactly what Fev can do.

What he does between now and the end of the year will have no effect on that. Each club has a potential price they will pay for Fevola, already knowing all his good points and bad.

What will effect things though is how desperate the Carlton Football Club seems in wanting to trade him.

In a small market like the trade market if it is seen that the club is absolutely fed up with Fev and desperate to trade him then the other clubs know this and the prices all the other clubs are prepared to pay will go down.

Come on Synbad. Drop Fev and the media will be all over it. You can't control whether it's a big story or not. At least this way it gets reported with sound bites from a controlled press conference.

You may want to pin it all on Pagan, but this time you're drawing a pretty long bow to do it. Regardless of circumstance, Fev's behaviour has been unacceptable, especially in a young team from a player with a strong personality. I doubt this is the first time he's been told to pull his head in, in fact I'd bet it's been done a bunch of times behind closed doors. That it's been done openly and in a way that limits media speculation is a good thing.

Not excusing his hissyfits and lack of onfield leadership, but willingly or unwillingly Fev's been made the public scapegoat ...

Id've much preferred that the presser was to announce Denis' departure and that the club could've quietly dealt with Fev inhouse with the same action stating 'he has an injury'.

Fevola should count himself lucky - He has only been suspended for one week - can now flog himself around to the highest bidder and may get a chance to perform on the big stage in september sooner than he thought. All this for being unprofessional

Poor old Lance he is suspended indefinitely and has no trade value at all and his career is over for being un professional

Without having heard the presser I'd have to say that it is pretty clear that he has been suspended from the club. A player who is dropped would still be expected to turn up at the club, train etc. From the sounds of it Fev has been told to stay away until next monday. He wont even play in the bullants from the sounds of it

Fev is NOT 100% ...

This is a Denis initiative...

And yes i can pin everything wrong with the club on Denis after 5 years.

I hesitate to get into conversation with you Synbad because I know there is next to zero chance of it being a meaningful or insightful back and forth discussion.

The fact that Fevola has been *suspended* and not dropped to the Bullants needed to be stated as early on as possible. It would not have been in the best interest of the CFC to have this turn into a drawn out saga with misinformation and hearsay hanging around the club about why and how long he was suspended for.

Do we agree on that?

We also have to consider that a new coach may very well be in charge of the CFC next year. The board and Swann may very well have made this decision with this very fact in mind.

What happens then if Fevola had finished the season being allowed to get away with his lackadaisical on-field performances? The new coach would have to make a decision on whether he thinks he can wring the most consistent AFL football from Fevola's career during his tenure. Or whether he should trade Fev and try and fix our deficiencies. That is something that he has to weigh up.

With the board / Swann drawing a line in the sand with Fev during the season then this decision is made easier for the new coach because he knows that Fevola will either knuckle down for 2008 (as he showed he could after he was suspended) or he will never change whilst he is at the CFC.

Remember back to French's retirement and Thornton and Russell wanting to leave?

Well Fevola is signalling his intentions that's he's over it.

He's over being part of a losing culture created by Pagan.

Change the coach, change the gameplan, start winning and see how happy everyone will be.

They can't stand the coach or each other!

How would you feel being an out and out champion having to put up with this shit for 5 years?

There's always a coach who reckons they can turn a player around. It's ego based.

Some of them actually can.

Presumably this is not just about Saturday but about probs Fev seems to have had for a while. Certainly he seems to have been in a downhill spiral since his wife left. Synbad was right re Whit - should have been traded when he had currency (tho his contract may have scared clubs off) and re the lack of senior leadership. At a strong club, strong leaders would not tolerate Fev's brain explosions. Unfortunately most of our genuine leaders have joined the club in the last few years.

The pity with Fev is that at his best he lifts the whole side and is an elite player, but at his worst he looks selfish, disinterested and sulky. Clubs know he is a problem child, as another poster mentioned they will weigh up the good with the bad. Creating an imaginary injury won't effect his trade power.

Adelaide's window is rapidly closing, a gun full forward might give them a last shot and Neil Craig and his mature leaders wouldn't tolerate rubbish. It's a case of damned if we do damned if we don't. There's nothing surer than he'll be a gun somewhere else and maybe we'll draft another Livo or Vance with the picks we get. Or Fev might get worse and we might draft the next Judd or Pavlich.

The other thing is that if we reckon we are 5 years from a serious flag challenge - when Murph Gibbs etc are 24 100+games, then Fev may be getting towards the end depending on how his body holds out.

Pagan is a dead man walking and I think this will be the committee more than him. DPs one + at CArlton was saving Fev's career. It would be great if Fev looked hard in the mirror and came back a new man, but I'm not sure introspection is his strong point. I was really frustrated with him against Freeo, but when he is good his exuberance and spark are worth more than goals. It is really, really disappointing that he can't be disciplined. At age 26 or so he probably isn't going to change .

The other disappointing thing is that Fev had been told he was to be acting captain in a few weeks and then he performs as he did Saturday. I think I read that the MC chose the captains and the leaders chose the order with Fev 4th in line, may say something about the players view.

Last night I said that Fevola deserved to be dropped based on his performance, but I could live with him starting on the interchange bench. He needed to learn that he is not indespensible to the club.

Now it is obvious that there is more going on than we know. Why does Fevola come back on a different flight to everyone else? Why does Fevola not attend training this morning? There seems to be discipline issues and these seem to have been going on for a while.

I would say that the club has handled this correctly. The club is bigger than the individual and as soon as we weed out these cancerous attitudes then the club will be a better place. He may have great football ability, but do you see the likes of Neita, Richo and co with similar off-field issues?

I don't care whether he plays for us again or not. Trade him for what we can get.

Sad as this announcement / form of the team is atm, I believe that there's got to be more to this than meets the eye.

In saying that, I have changed my allegiance to the Pro Tank side; that's what the club seems to be doing too imo!

My Tank theory:

Our gaps

We are lacking in the ruck; even if Aisake comes up, he'll be an apprentice. We need another genuine ruckman.
We need a KP defender.
We need some genuine midfield run and classy ones at that; Stevens alone wont fill all the gaps.
We need a few first round draft picks; potential stars.
Evene without Fev,we have Kennedy, Hartlett, Fish and Waite that can fill the tall positions in the forwardline (it's upfield we need to plug holes); so lets try it.

How do we fill the gaps?

There may be a need for the #1 selection (on a Judd type of recruit) to work with Stevens, Murphy, Gibbs, Carrazzo and Simmo. or it maybe a sort after ruckman

Adelaide or WCE, wont get us high picks (but they have ruckmen and midfielders we could do with).

Melb and Rich are in the running for #1 pick. So one pick whether it's 3rd, 2nd or 1st is just not enough to fast track the team to success.

We must lose every game for the remainder of the season to get at least an extra pick (PP), so there's at least 2 first round picks.

Wallace wants Fev; maybe a trade for Fev (along with the PP) will guarantee we have Pick, 1,2,3 and maybe 19 and 20 too. The we have picks we can trade for stars as well as having 2 early picks.

What can we do to get ourselves 3 round 1 drafts?

Neitz is out, so we're a chance to win this week; that's not the plan.

Drop Fev and that shortens the odds for a win against the Dees; but not guaranteed.

Side track our attention to Fev never coming back instead of the game, and the team is going to have a downer against Melb; a better chance to lose.

Let the public know that Fev is tradeable at season's end...CFC will have a lot of interest from a dozen teams; he's only 26. That'll get us the missing pick between picks 1 and 3. May trade Fev to Melb or Rich.

If we don't trade Fev and Voss comes in, Fev may change his ways and play for the coach.

We still have picks 1 and 2 and still have Fev.



I don't know what's going on, but there's got to be a positive reason for the club in making such an announcement; I'm sure Pratty has been informed of the plan (or, it's his plan).

If you want the max trade value then the club has done the right thing, they are just stating what everyone already knows.

Nothing lowers a players value than a possible injury cloud!

Williams (generally) played for the jumper and had more skill/commitment in his little toenail than Fevola has.
Diesel, for all his faults, was not a selfish, petulant brat.
This 100m penalty is not the catalyst for Fevola's suspension FFS.
It is the straw that broke the camels back in a litany of onfield incidents and indiscretions and was waaaayyyy to long in coming.
