If Melbourne happens to get Pagan and he gets them in the top 8 over night, don’t start winging why Carlton let him go.

Unfortunately for Denis, the Melbourne coaching job isnt decided by a desperate president trying to save his own arse.
The criteria is meticulous and thorough.

In other words, dont hold your breath. :-D

We as supporters should give our blessing if something like this were to eventuate

I dont want to hear one peep re snide traitor remarks ala Hamill

We kept TBird, Russell time to make a sacrifice to the Gods of Karma

As unsavoury as this might be to you ferals, and in the words of Sting

IF YOU LOVE SOMEONE - SET IT FREE

Go Denis go

Dont let the smooth haircut fool you. Prez made a 180 degree turnaround in a couple of weeks.

Unlikely maybe but stranger things have happened

Melbourne have said that they will search far and wide for a new coach. This seems as though they will put all candidates through a rigourous procedure to determine the best fit for their club.

The question I pose to you all is, how equipped is Denis Pagan to sell himself to the Melbourne Football Club? It is obvious that he is not going to walk right into the job, and rather would have to be seen to be the strongest candidate based on numerous interviews, psych profiling, and a probable range of trendy HR tools to determine somebody's organisational 'fit'.

Lets refresh our memories shall we. As far as I understand, Pagan was hired by Elliot et al in September 2002? Did he have to go through any recruiting procedure? Or was he simply 'poached'? I think it is the latter.

As for his time at the Roos, I am only assuming that he was awarded the job on merit due to his form with the U/19 side. He would have been the logical replacement for Schimmelbusch.

Denis Pagan is one of those people who has been lucky enough to never face a strict recruiting procedure for either of his senior coaching jobs. If he did leave Carlton, I doubt he would 'apply' for the Melbourne job because he knows that he would not be able to beat other candidates in testing, rather thinking his level in the coaching strata would deliver it to him immediately.

It just show how little you know about Carlton Ox - Smorgan and the board put Denis and his football department under intense scrutiny last year and they determined he was the best man for the job

I'm actually more concerned about the possibility that Daniher walked to put himself in contention for Pagan's job

Nah Daniher will eventually go back to the Bombers either 2008 or 2009 depending when Sheeds departs

Melbourne from what i hear - Mark Harvey is a prospect and also Connellly from Freo

FReo will definately be another coach change to happen soon with Sumich the front runner

Pagan will grab another 1-2 year contract with Carlton next year... Sheedy will go to Melbourne, and Mark Harvey will coach the Bombers.

a patient of mine, a big wig corporate type, no reason to doubt his integrity, claims he saw a certain coach from brisbane being entertained by some high and mighty officials of the club at the qantas lounge in the airport????!!!! Big claims, but could it be true? Has any one heard anything? i tell you what he definitely got me excited maybe an injection of toughness we really need? mathews coach/voss as assistant?

Welcome Badboy.

The same thing was posted earlier by someone else. If it's true, I would think more about getting a reference on Voss than trying to poach Matthews. Matthews is under contract next year, and has no reason to leave Brisbane.

Having said that, I'd love Matthews as coach.

Not sure whether Leigh Matthews would have the fire in the belly after winning 4 premierships with two different clubs. Let's not forget that he walked into one of the greatest lists ever back in 1999 at Brisbane. I would say Leigh is a great manager of men but not sure if he is a great teacher.
We don't want another Pagan scenario and a costly one at that. Then again we as a club have never gone through exhaustive interview processes to hire a coach. Never. Times have changed and we should look at as many candidates as possible. We must get the right man with the right outlook for our future.

Is money really a problem these days?

No seriously, you have made good points that would have to be seriously considered LC.

I would have thought the carlton scenario at the momemnt would be similar to what mathews inherited at brisbane from walls? great list of young kids bled in a team that was on the wrong side of some major losses ala the bad news bears days and some experienced heads?
i think we could do worse??? where we are at at the moment could we go an unexperienced first time coach? the st kilda experiment bothers me!!
