But we do have the worst list and a few of the players will be starting to play for their survival.
With self-preservation comes self-centred, unteam-like football which is a sure way to lose.
When we looked good during the last few weeks, the TEAM looked good they all played as a team, covered for teammates, didn't crowd the contest, shepherded, blocked.
When, like the 3rd quarter and beginning of the 2nd quarter against Melbourne they played badly, they were all not playing team football but trying to save their skins by trying to rack up possessions.
I have argued that the way we've played this premiership season has been extremely selfish and this has resulted in an incoherent team dynamic where people's role in the side is ever-changing and being changed by players going away from team rules and team-centred football in pursuit of selfish and cheap football. And there are few exceptions to this and as such, players who follow the team rules are seen to be the victims of being not good enough in some cases, when the failure of some players to stick to the structure that has been put into place has caused others to try to paper up the cracks - which is unfair on those trying to follow the team thing (because they ARE limited in some ways on talent but even superstar players can't do multiple tasks week-in and week-out without support) and those who are trying to paper up the cracks are not getting any support.
The cream rises to the top but the richness of the cream determines the quality of the dessert. At the moment it's cream-laden without much substance. There's plenty of cream in the more mature layers, however, the cream has no flavour and has no effect on the rest of the dessert because the cream has not flowed through to the rest of the dessert properly, it has not gelled with the elements of the dessert.
