The new Captain will have to start in the BP, spend time tagging & spend extended time on the pine so that he may learn the job

Good Idea!

My captaincy roster for the remaindr of 07 would be:

1. Murphy
2. Waite
3. Fev
4. T-Bird
5. Carrots
6. Walker (Would be earlier...but injury)
7. Scotland
8. Fish
9. Wiggler
10. Whitnall....testimonial game?
Here here, with the exception of week 10 ... What about reducing the list and making it two week stints? Or giving Kouta the nod again, if only for one week. Surely he's cringeing at the idea of the team doing so badly and his not being at the helm to steer it right (ignoring the last three years, of course)

What about a TC poll?

People say Murphy is too young.

For heavens sake we have seen that the other candidates, ie Fev, Lappin, Stevens , Scotland, are not up to it. Why would you install someone as captain because they were born on acertain date. They are proven failures as leaders. Why should we continue to accept mediocrity.

Murphy is a born leader. It may be before his ideal time but so what. He'll grow int the job. It isnt to much for him, it won't weigh him down.
Have some faith

Murphy's having enough work in learning to shake his tags. Let's not put nd extra burden on a young kid. Just give it to Fev or Lappin, or even try a Carazzo for the season and see how it goes. To me it's a good time now to try a captain, and even Ratten a a coach (another story), to see how they pan out. Makes decisions easier for next year. We have nothing to lose. We might be pleasantly surprised (or unpleasantly shocked!!) on how one handles the responsibility.

Not sure if Murph is ready. Carotts would be an inspired choice. He's in career best form and has deserved the honour!!!

..yeah, i agree i think as an interim captain carrots is a fine choice.. ..he's playing really well... ..and not just in getting the ball, which he does extremely well.. ..he works hard off the ball, and keeps running.. ..he's hard at it, tough and improving every week.. ..i think he'd do really well..

The problem we have at Carlton is that we lack leadership, especially with Stevens out for the year.

With that in mind I think we should go for a 3 co-captain system. I'm not in favour of this as a full time option like St.Kilda and Brisbane, but for 10 weeks i think it would give three players the opportunity to become better leaders.

Any three of ...

Murphy,
Simpson,
Waite,
Walker

(Maybe not Walks given his injury)

..i think sharing the captaincy is sorta like splitting the responsibility.. ..i prefer a single captain, and single vice captain.. ..and thats where the buck stops..

Has to be Fev.... he is the only bloke that can inspire our team, you can see it when he lifts we lift. He is a champion and honestly anyone saying we should give it to Murphy has lost the plot. The poor kid is struggling with tags week in week out and you want to add pressure on him by giving him captaincy. Just let the young bloke learn the game and geta kick.....

Fevola 1st option
Scotland 2nd option
Lappin 3rd option

I don't think Fev is a good option...at this stage anyway. He is still spitting the dummy too much for my liking. It's not a good example for the kids. He inspires the team when he does the chases and kicks the important goals. However, when things aren't going his way, he drops his chin a little bit too much for my liking.

A captain needs to keep going when we're losing. None of that "can't be stuffed" mentality. For mine, the players who keeps going even while we're getting thrashed are as follows (in no particular order):

Murphy
Gibbs
Scotland
Bentick
Fisher
Wiggins
Carrazo
Kouta

*I would have included Whitnall and Walker but both are injured.

Out of those, I would like to see Murphy and Gibbs be given the captaincy and vice captaincy. Murphy may be getting tagged week in week out, but it will add to his learning curve.

Both him and Gibbs have natural talent and without a doubt, will be the future leaders of Carlton. Why not accelerate their leadership qualities? They are already in the leadership group, so it's not coming out of left field. If indeed Lance is injured, let the two young guns have a go as kind of a "work experience" if you like.

Everyone seems to have their opinion as to what constitutes a good captain.

The Natural
We have Murphy in one corner - who oozes TM leadership but then we have people saying he is too young and is not ready as he has other things to deal with such pissing off his taggers.

The Enigma
In another corner, we have Fev - has been appalling off field and has only recently pulled his finger out on field [not dropping his bundle when not getting a free kick]. But on the other hand, he is the first to fly the flag for the team [rightly or wrongly] and would be considered to be inspirational by most people on this site.

The Brains
In the other corner, we have Lance, who according to Jack Niall at The Age won't be captain in 08 [assuming he is at Carlton next year]. Does not inspire his teammates because of his continual issues with fitness. Has a brain that no one disputes, but is not the future of the club and will certainly not be at Carlton when we win the 17th. He is injured, which means he will be out for a few weeks, which leads us to the final corner.

The Smokie
SOV - has set himself up to make 2007 his year and has performed extremely well at both ends of the ground, which places him in a very rare bracket of players. In a recent interview he stated that learning and sticking to set tasks like housework were assisting him in becoming more disciplined on field and minimising his fadeouts.

Although Murphy is my preferred choice, but knowing that the club lacks a sense of daring in doing it, I would give the gig to SOV as I believe that it will add to his maturing character and will set him down the path to being a consistent match turner for the CFC.

Is he a good tagger

Not sure, I think there is doubts over his ability to keep a bench warm..

I like the idea of handing the captaincy around for the rest of the year while Lance is out. Each member of the leadership group gets a week or two. Good experience and it can be an audition for the job for next year. They should be told as much.

Then in 08, you would think that it has to be between Stevens and Murph. With the loser being VC and Gibbsy as DVC.

Murph and Gibbs are our future leaders. I don't see why after 2-3 years in the team, that they can't take over and shape our new club. They are both superstars and awesome kids.

They can be supported by Fev, Fish, T-Bird, Waite, Scotland, Carrots and Simmo in the leadership group. Lance (going forward), Kouta and Lappin can be onfield leaders without any real official titles.

My smokey is Setanta for the leadership group in 08 or 09. I think the kid is so classy and professional.

10 blokes having one week gives 10 blokes sweet FA. Give it to one who deserves it and can benefit from it.

Don't get all romantic looking for the young kid to step up and take the flag ala the mighty ducks or some other American crap.

Fev could really use the experience to lead his men and might learn something from it. They'll be plenty of time for the young fellas to get a crack.

only sweet FA if the players take nothing away from it. it may mean sweet FA to you but im sure if you asked the players they would see it as a real honour to be apointed the captin of a club, even it is just for 1 week.

some players won't want to be captin, so you don't give it to them, others would jump at the opportunity.

who could fev learn and benefit from it but others wil get sweet FA from the experience????

football like life is about experiences and learning from them. we have an change in the last 10 weeks of the season to provide 10 of our players an opportunity they may never get otherwise.

its been mentioned 5 players for 2 weeks each, this also works.

Being captain of Carlton should be a special privilege. Giving it to 10 blokes makes it not. I don't care if the players would appreciate the honour.

I agree buzaaah but then I would agree with your avatar everytime.

Give it SOV and let's put an end to it.

Although I would prefer Murphy.
