Not sure if this is related but I follow the EPL (as do a lot of people on this site no doubt) and I always notice that when a player who has changed teams goes back to an old club / ground while playing for the new club he is almost always warmly received by the fans of the old club. It especially happens when he has been part of a successful team at the old club.
In AFL however, players are generally lambasted when they retuurn to an old club. Look at Akermanis, Tarrant this year for example.
I have often wondered why the mentality is different here than in England? Is it to do with the sport? Is it to do with the circumstances under which they changed clubs i.e. they chose to change teams for money or were they pushed? Are we just so passionate about our clubs we can't see beyond that?
It might have something to do with the value of loyalty - leaving a club is tantamount to betrayal and it's hard to look past that, to me.
It might also say that we love the clubs more than the game itself. Which isn't surprising, considering the state the game is in...
Good article. I didn't know that about Harry Davie. Although Mott only played the one year with Sydney as well - delisted at the end of 02, rookied by Freo in 03 and then picked up by us.
