A very interesting point regarding Lance and the hawks is the attitude that Hawthorn took with their underperforming and uncommitted senior players when Clarkson took on the job. They were daring, right from the start they backed youth and traded out Thompson and Hay.

We use to be the smartest club, but it was decisions (or lack thereof) on underperforming senior players like Lance that has meant we are further behind in the talent department than where we could have been.

Hawthorn have so much depth now with Dowler, Thorp and Muston in the VFL along with Bailey who did an ACL this year. They were daring and it appeared that they have an attitude that you can never have enough talented players on your list

Bloody great stuff; I wouldn't mind if you wrote that another hundred times so it can sink in. Perhaps Hawthorn's situation will put at rest this dangerous idea that you don't have to aspire to have a superior list. It is not the only concern, of course, but it is a bloody important one. We may never get it, but not to 'aspire' to it is just down-right unprofessional, in my book. :x

Spot on Chubby. The Dawkers saw this 3 years ago. Turf the Duds, and go with youth, even if it means you lose a few games early on.

Just so poor tonite. The amazing thing for me was the amount of times the Dawks were able to get possession on their own. And to think we only need one more win to say goodbye to Kreuzer.

They still have Jacobs, so the force is not fully with the hawcks.

Pros

1. I'm in London, and haven't had to watch the game
2. I now won't tie up the laptop downloading and watching the game over the weekend, which will win me bonus points with Mrs NC.
3. Somewhere ... Pratt's sacking finger is twitching.

Cons

1. Pratt's sacking finger didn't twitch earlier in the season. Pagan knew he was on the razors edge, ergo the usual suspects get one more chance to turn it around because Pagans needs to win 8 games this season (I know, the newspaper told me) and ... woah ... it's like 2004 all over again.

2. We'd have to lose 10 consecutive games to get the priority pick, and I can't say with any degree of confidence that we'll miss it.

but worst of all

3. Cazzesman, who in all the time I've been posting on this board and its predecessors has managed to remain resolutely positive no matter the circumstances, finally can't find a single pro.

Pack it up, it's over.

Pros: 9 pubs

Cons: We will probably miss the PP which we badly need.

Dont worry if we dont get the PP... with the nine pubs Pratt now has the funds to buy each and every player a copy of 'The Secret'... and he will be flying down 'The Teachers'.... Denis and Lance and Kouta will come good...

PRO -
Games like that against top teams highlight those players who are no good in the modern game or are just passed it

eg Lappin, Koutoufides, Whitnall, Bannister, Ackland

PRO -
Losses like this once the club has money and management and commitment highlight the weaknesses of the list and show up how different our selected teams need to be.

After making few changes against some middle ranked teams, we come up against a very good team and our lack of pace and skill and leadership and rucking ability was shown up.

PRO -
Therefore games like this renew games chances for Anderson, Grigg when fit, Benjamin, Edwards, Harlett and Aisake.

For a bottom 8 team this is what it should be about; not waiting around for the players above to just finish up.

Pros:

- we received a football lesson, and perhaps a wake-up call*

Cons (on top of all else that's been mentioned):

- the inability, be it due to physical or mental shortcomings, of most of our players to run hard (in either offensive or defensive situations). We were well and truly shown how this must be done tonight, and the truth is, we have too many who cannot (or will not) do their part in this regard.

- two and a half more years of Cain Ackland (say it can't be so?). I'm usually not one for singling out players, but poor Cain is, pound for pound, one of the AFL's softest and most ineffectual players. For heaven's sake, son, we know you're not the most talented lad, but at least win our respect by putting your large frame on the line for your mates.

* in any business function, if staff don't have their minds on the job, or are a "little ahead of themselves", it's deemed to be a management issue; it's a bit bloody rich for Pagan to roll this line out to the media after the match, when, quite simply, ensuring the players are correctly prepared is his job function. Poor man management, that.

The final paragraph is the biggest indictment of Pagan. Agreed, I cannot believe he would say that in a public forum  . He has to go and soon with Ackland carrying his bags!

Pros:
- the first 15 minutes of the first quarter we looked really good and played the way we did last week
- the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter we tried hard again but with no goals we fell away very quickly again
- Fisher/Wiggins and the half forward line work pretty hard
- Walker... he had a pretty average game but what I liked is his continued maturity that even when he was not going so well he was mentally strong enough to keep working on his game and I thought he was one of the few players who tried very hard after half time
- Murphy and Gibbs certainly played ok
- there will be changes for the next game and we should see some kids again... ones that are not afraid to run hard and work for their team mates
- Griggs is off the injured list

Cons
- absolutely smashed out of the middle i cannot remember a game where the opposition won almost every centre clearance and almost exclusively running straight through the lines and kicking it inside 50. This is where we lost the game ... no team can lose this many clearances and give up so many inside 50s and win.
- we did not run hard enough for each other; the Hawks always ran forward of the ball carrier creating endless options. Their running was bloody impressive and as Grant Thomas said very well - 'completely intimidated Carlton'. We dropped our heads and stopped working for each other and running for each other.... and instead we kicked to unwinnable contests on the wing and got sucked into playing static short kicking football on our half back line
- having to move Waite into the backline and then a tagging role

....One side note the Hawks were unbelieve with their delivery into the forward 50 and very few defenders could have stopped the quality being provided ... we lost this game in the middle. Yes some of the defenders had nightmare games but this would not have made a difference.

Managed to avoid having to stand
Simmo tried his guts out
JR looks a much better player since his run in the twos, I thought he was at least positive last night and looks a much more confident boy than he was 3 weeks ago==> I know he bombs but at least he has some kicking depth and kicks to the hotspot
Pagan not flooding to minimise the damage, but encouraging the players to persist with positive football (which in the long run is better for their development)

Cons
First game for the year - clearly picked the best one
Ackland
That flower Pagan using getting ahead of themselves as an excuse when its largely his fault

CON

Did you noticehow we just gave up the centre part of the ground and had to weasel around the edges with chip kicks to get the ball forward? It was like 2006 all over again.

simmo tried all night long, really battled hard for himself, his teammates and the jumper, weve been shown just who isnt up to it, russell has improved.

CON: was really really disappointing
PRO: i still love this club...but nothing would change that

i was at the tigers game and yes the first half saw the tigers win clearances but they were not as damaging as the hawks... but also notice in the second half when we started to win the clearances we came back and won

.... i was sitting there last night with my mate saying after every single centre bounce in the second half ... lets see if we can win this one ... i can only remember less than a handful of clearances and most of them sideways ... the hawks killed us!
