Seems to me that we might infact have the correct game plan (never doubted) and coach (did waiver) to not only succeed, but have other teams follow our lead! :-D

I'm no expert, but is the game that we are playing now, the one that DP employed at the Roos and when he first came to Carlton?

It really irks me when commentators (Jason Dunstall last week comes to mind immediately) talk about this game plan that we've employed 'this year'.

It's bullshit.

To my reckoning, we've only really played in this way in 5 games. Our last 4, and the Brisbane game.

I'm sure jimmae's been taking more detailed notes than I have, but I think this view being perpetuated about 'Pagan's 2007 playing style' is a bit of toss. By my reckoning he's chosen to go with this style of play after he persisted and persisted with a style that was pox.

The fact that our 'plan' is suddenly the darling of the media shows how fickle the meeedyah is.

Last year against WCE, we played in a similar way, but the kids ran out of legs after leading the eventual premiers by about 40 points in 3Q.

The week prior, the players took control of the match ups and game plan. They were empowered and took everyone by surprise.

This game plan was started by the players who knew were good enough to play free flowing attacking footy rather than Pagan's paddock or the super flood; get it?...not Pagan's idea.

Congrats should go to the leadership group of 2006 for this game plan, and for this year's leadership group for obviously changing Pagan's mind.

I'm with you bluehammer.

attacking football is great for the game.
i don't understand why all teams don't focus on it.

nice spin on things

going by this it's the leadership group that is at fault for the past 5 1/2 years performances.

do we give pagan praise for empowering the players?

And it's the way we played when we defeated the Weagles in 2005 to take the pre-season cup!

Attacking football with the players playing to their strengths.

My post wasn't really about that at all. Pagan blaming or whatever...

It was more of an attack on the media who are talking as if Pagan has pioneered this radical new attacking gameplan all year, which he certainly hasn't.

I don't think it's something you can look at broadly.

The forward setups are reasonably different from the start of the year and that's made a big difference. There's a tendency for 1-on-1 footy and our stoppage play hasn't changed much for years, just the players.

Defensively, Pagan's always liked that big bodied small bloke to drop in front of leads (Archer, Colbert, Teague) and a lot of no frills stoppers. Unfortunately most forward thrusts start from defence these days, so this has been his steepest learning curve in my book. The willingness to set up a back six and generally back them 1-on-1 has been good, but this will not win you every game of footy (unless you can conjure up good match-ups week in week out). The lack of able-bodied natural defenders hasn't helped. If you look at our list you'd nominate Carrazzo, T-Bird, Flint, Jamison, Anderson and at a pinch, Gibbs & Saddo.

I would however agree that the philosophies that Pagan brought from the Roos hold true (i.e. emphasis on putting the ball deep into the f50, playing through the corridor, preference for the long option, winning the contested footy, etc).

For mine it looks of a bloke who has tried to carbon-copy his own style, had a crack at possession footy to make use of the team's height and then found a bit of a balance between the two. The next step is developing tempo footy so we can stem the flow in our rougher patches. That one quarter a game has killed us prior to the last two weeks.

Hopefully he refines this 'hybrid' system. It'd be great to see the majority of players in a position to help educate those coming into the playing group.

Some of you might have grown weary of the bloke, but anyone can see he's now got the good ship Carlton on a very nice course.

At the moment 'plan B' is open up the forward line for Fev or shuffle defensive match-ups.

I'd say that's a pretty good way to have things. As I said, the defensive aspect of our game is a bit wanting through lack of natural defenders who can compete (Santy @ FB, Waite @ CHB, Walker @ BP etc)

The Hawks will play a familair style... they will Flood their defenfive 50 and rely on a low scoring game to win it by a Wrestle....

when that happens, Fev should push up to CHF, and take shots from 50 and 60 m out.....

regardless, this tactic can expose Carlton's poor disposal under pressure to find a target and it can Slow down our run and scoring capacity...

Remember last year we had Waite and Fisher out for many games. Hard to play this style without big targets who can take a grab.

We have a plan B and that is kick it to Fevs... :-D

We can alway keep them guessing.

As long as we keep moving the ball well with long kicks to beat the flood (players can't move quicker than the ball), giving our forwards every opportunity we should remain very competative as the players have grown in stature also...

Gameplans only become blueprits for other clubs if theyre succesful in the heat of finals... by that time another club wins finals and becomes the trendsetter.
In truth only working to the strengths of your playing list can win a flag.

So you find your own gameplan and you win a premiership with it .. rather than work to someone elses... ala StKilda modelling themselves on the Lions and by the time they got therethey hadnt.

Excellent point here Cazz but ... you knew there would be ... the banishment of Whitnall and no support for Fev made it two fold.

I hope if Pagan does decide to play Waite back this week that he will atleast give O'hAilpin a resting job forward, however I prefer Waite forward unless Kennedy, Hartlett or Edwards are ready.

We have a lot of forward options, we just need to find out who can play back for good.

I'm not sure what you mean by spin B1, because there's no spin in what I'm saying. I'm identifying the first time I witnessed the attacking style of play since Pagan took control and suggesting it was the leadership groups decision/plan to play that way.

I think you're putting a spinner in the works here...making a connection between 1 game and 5 1/2 years of games, which I haven't suggested at all, hence, you see a reason for blaming the leadership group for the previous 5 1/2 years lack of performance, when in fact they had little say (if any) in what was to be the training, game plan and selections in those 5 1/2 years, as they did in this ONE game against the WCE.

I'm just saying that Pagan through his hands in the air, after a miserable defeat the previous week, and gave over the training and coaching responsibility to the players, as well as team selection. Where's the spin in that?

Yeah, you can give Pagan credit for empowering the leadership group, but you can't give him credit for the decisions they made in that week.

I'm not a Pagan basher, but credit where credit's due...to the leadership group.
