Which players are out of contract this year?

I'mn pretty sure that Murphy comes out of contract this year (i think its a rule that drafted players must sign 2 year deals) and that would leave Kennedy in the same boat also.

We must sign up our younger guns ASAP.

Is it possible for someone to provide a list of all our squad and when they come off contract?

Didn't we sign Murph to a 5 year deal?

Wow, a lot of important players on that 2007 list. Let's hope they get to work and keep them happy

I don't think many managers will allow their charges to sign for one year. That is usually reserved for the people who are on their last legs, physically or metaphorically. Players like Hartlett, Edwards and Bower will hold out for two years. Problem is, we still don't know how good they are. Richmond will be looking for a Hartlett-type because Richo will have to finish soon enough. Melbourne have Neitz with not long to go. Offer someone like Hartlett not enough and he is lost to the PSD and either of those clubs would love him. Or maybe Edwards or both.
I reckon Whitnall will be more likely to get one year than two for the reason he is on his last legs, physically, despite his footy smarts. He knows he isn't trade bait any more so if the powers that be give him one year, he will have to take it or adios it is.
The bean counters are working overtime on this whole problem you can bet your life PLUS they have to leave room in the cap for an experienced midfielder and/or a KPP backman.
Player managers who get in early with their charges do so in the hope they can get an extra dollar before the well starts to look a little dry. No club will want to finalize things until they know who is out of favour with everybody else. Imagine having no room in your cap and Del santo decided to leave StK. Or Priddis or McLean...
In two or three years when Murphy, Gibbs, Walker, Fev, Kennedy, Simpson, Carazzo and co. are all stars and all due for renewal at about the same time, we will know what salary cap and player contract management is all about. For now, it isn't so critical.

Spot on Sombo.

Whitnall, Lappo - 1 year contracts
Stevens and Scotty - 2 year contracts
I would save the 3 year deals for players of the calibre of Murph, Walker and Gibbs. In fact I would sign them to 5+ year deals right now.

Will Stevo's injury effect the length of his next contract?
What I mean is, is the injury a 12 month lay-off and then it'll be fine, or will he have to be subjected to tests to see whether he will ever play again?
Either way, I don't think he will get an automatic 3 years.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Big Red.
I've supported him with previous posts, but he hasn't done a lot this year.
I think that the club will play hard ball with himand Whitnall is smart enough to know that Hartlett and Kennedy are right on his tail.

With that in mind, I think that both Hartlett and kennedy will stay because they know that their opportunities to take a KP in their own right are not that far away.
Hartlett might go to Richmond or Melbourne, etc for the right deal if Whitnall stays on a long term contract.

If I was involved in the process, I'd sign both Hartlett and Kennedy on 2 year deals and if Big Red went in the PSD, well that's something we'd just have to take on the chin.

With the likes of Walker, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Kennedy, Blackwell, Carlos, Russell, Waite, etc (plus another top ten pick in '07) all looking at bigger contracts over the next 2 - 5 years, I think we'll see less and less of sentiment when it comes to re-signing players.

I'd give Stevo 2 years on GOOD money and I'd give Murph 3 years on GOOD money. I'd reward Walks Scotto & carrotts as well with a nice increase.
Anything more than 3 years is too dangerous IMO. Serious injury (ala Hamill) or playing group fallouts can cause serious problems so nothing more than 3 year contracts I reckon.

And I don't see why 2 year max. coaching contracts is unreasonable either.

As Silly as this sounds I would sign both Gibbs and Murphy to 5-6 year deals now. If gibbs comes out of contract expect Adelaide to offer him the world.

More importantly,

Which 5 do you see not being there next year....
I think that's more the reason why DUC was thrwoing around 1 year contracts, but it doesn't work that way
Isn't it nice to be in that position instaed of wandering why we didn't de-list more?

Agree with the above list but I would give Edwards and Bower both two year deals and delist Flint and possibly Hartlett. Keep in mind Hartlett signed for 1 yaer last year and he definitely hasn't done anything this year to prove why he should get a 2 year deal this time around.

I wouldn't bother recontracting Whitnall. Sell him to anyone who's prepared to give us a 3rd rounder or better. Partly because the game has passed him by, and partly because it's painfully obvious we can't play both Whitnall and Kennedy in the same team. Sorry, but Lance just doesn't feature in our future.

If I were a young player, I'd jump at a 5 year deal. Personally, I think the next round of broadcast negotiations might bring about a nasty surprise to the AFL, and the money that's going around now is about as good as it's going to get.

Murph... Walks... Gibbs... lock yourselves in now fellas!

As much as I'd like to trade Lance at the drop of a hat, how are we going to put a positive spin on trading Lance a year after he was made captain?

The answer is we won't and he'll see his days out as a Carlton footballer or, better still, an Bullants player.

If we traded him, the media would have a field day with us.

Spot on. People can say they want him to be traded but the fact is it will not and cannot happen. Their really is no point even discussing it because the club cannot do it. He probably has two years left and probably by the end of that 2nd year he will be struggling to hold his place in the side.

5 ???? It will be more like 6 or 7

they have to make a call on Jackson and Aisake and will most likely have 4 picks if not more in the draft .

The only saving grace this year is if the AFL tries to reintroduce the reserves and expands the list otherwise there is going to be some youngish players let go particually if Bannister and Saddington keep their form

make murphy captain and the spin will be extraordinarily positive.

seriously, what better person to lead our young side from 2008 onwards than murph? great work ethic, quality person and player, scrubs up well in the media, and wholly representative of a young list going places.

CAPTAIN - 90% SYMBOLISM. Lance isn't where we're at as a club. Murphy, Gibbs, etc is.

everyone in the footy world knows that Lance was made captain because none of the young guys were ready. Trading him would barely cause a ripple. Particularly if we keep winning without any meaningful impact from him.

stevens could do the job well for 2/3 years, but I reckon murph has 10 year captain written all over him.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Thanks SB, I juts played the "middle of road" devisl advocate. Minimum 3 maximum anything...so I suggest 5
