Gav, I hear what you're saying. The thing is, we'll win what we win. If we aren't making finals (which is unlikely this year), my wish is for as many wins as possible while still giving us a high pick. Kinda contradicts each other, but given the eveness of the league it is possible to have 8/9 wins and still finish 12th/13th. Any pick in the top 5 should be pretty good and that's where I suspect we'll finish. The main reason is, if we get any more injuries, it'll impact our season more than most teams because our depth is still too young right now.

Here's my mid season ladder prediction:

Team Wins
GEE 17
WCE 17
COL 16
SYD 14
HAW 13
ESS 12
KAN 12
ADE 12
WBD 11
PA 11
FRE 9
CAR 9
BL 8.5
STK 8
MEL 4
RIC 2.5

We have some pretty good talent now and our team is so young that the upside is huge.

Come to think of it the players are such a protected species, that it is easier to unearth a player now, than what it was not so long ago.....

We will be just fine.

No disrespect to you Firearms but i get the vibe that there are a heap of blues fans just like you who's attitudes have changed in the last few weeks because they can see how positive football can do so much for a club than 1 or 2 individuals.

No-one is saying our current list is perfect and deep (i think). Its more the point that our no 3 pick this year will be awesome in our team of inspired players with a winning attitude.

I think it's that winning feeling that we have missed so much.
I guess we notice how it makes us feel and can translate that into the players somewhat.....

I wanted two picks in the top three so bad, but now give me one in the top 5 and i think we should do well....

I am looking forward to this friday's match more than anygame in the last few years....

In regards to tanking for this year, i was wrong....

I'm sick of the whole tanking argument...I was sick of it last year....and sick of it the year before last.

The team does not tank...I find it hard to believe that competitive sportspeople (particularly ones with an over-abundance of testosterone) can be deliberately consistently crap.

Now, a team that lacks a wide enough spread of talent, that lacks confidence, that has failed to gel together, will consistently lose games. Now a team like that, that has been denied participation in several drafts, could make very good use of extra picks at the top level. And fans have every right to get excited about that extra talent that comes their way.

But if they manage to show some improvement along the way, win a few extra games than were anticipated, *meh*, I quess they will cope very well and rebuild the hard way instead.

Mrs Caz i don't think that players ever would tank. New players would be a threat to their positions and paycheques above all other reasons...

It's the coach and commitee who plan to rebuild, that tank.
You get the best out of a player/team by playing to their strengths, and you get worse results when you give them tasks that go against their strengths and capability's....

I think that's how tanking is possible.........

Could we have been so lucky to get the PP in the last two years?
I honestly believe we could of won more than 4 games in 05/06........

That's a whole different kettle of fish entirely. I don't believe Carlton can deal with mediocrity as well as other clubs. I’m not even certain that it is healthy to do so, as it may lead to an artificial sense of capability. Which brings back the whole issue of plugging gaps for the sake of short term success; not only do they take up spots that could be used for a player with more of an up-side and a future but you also don’t end up with the draft picks that really reflect were your club's at.

Look the AFL has done it's all to inflict doom and gloom on this mighty club but failed to put the final nail in the coffin.

Whilst Evans was alive, the AFL penalised Carlton with drfat picks and a million dollars; unprecedented. They also changed the rules last year so that we couldn't get a PP. Why?

The AFL realised that despite the fact that our list was the youngest in the competition, it has the most upside. They thought that teams like StKilda with 4 #1 picks, 3 #2 picks and 9 top 10 draftees are probably the only team that could @#$%&! up that sort of opportunity (the AFL gave them), but with Carlton they saw something different; Carlton.

The AFL knew that just the addition of Gibbs to that young list, followed by picks 17 and 19 in the superdraft to sort out the missing link (the ruck issue), that Carlton would once again be an indelible force; and sooner than anyone else had believed. The AFL knew we couldn't win as few as 4 games in 2007; they could see the upside, the potential, the quality.

I don't think we should worry about tanking; it's a lost cause. We have once again become the most attactive club to join in Victoria. We are a superpower, with an awesome history, a great redevelopment of player facilties, a very very good list, albeit young, and a very cagey President, with a lot of influence. We will snag a big name or 2 in the near future, maybe 2008, as well as a couple more good draftees in 2008.

But instead of thinking tanking, I'm thinking of finals in 2007.

This year, with only 11 games required for 8th place in a very even year, I can't see anyone beating us for the remainder of the year, and we have the luxury of dropping 4 games, maybe 3 to play it safe.

We don't play WCE or the Cats again. We play 3 games at home (Dome), 3 games at our spiritual home (MCG) and 4 interstate games against Freo, Swans, Lions and Port.

I can't see us losing more than.....???...um...well I can't see us losing. We might drop 3 or 4; that's what I see. Might! Highly likely we'll lose a couple though....umpires are out there.

They're only kids are they are winning one on one footy and have learned to win shoot outs. There is a new belief and relief with our belief.

We don't 'need' to tank, we need to have a good look at the list we have, believe in it, and watch it improve at every outing. We have a very very good, deep list, albeit young. We just need a ruckman and another 2 midfielders to keep the pressure on Grigg, Anderson, Benji and Jackson to perform.

We are also already guaranteed the recruitment of a 27 yo elite midfielder next year called Nick Stevens.

Baby Blues are heading for finals and flags.

You can bet your ass *or not* that I'm not one of those fans. Positive to the end - play every game to win, believe that we can win any game - from any position... and tanking - what the flower is tanking!?

For all you that are not of this ilk, try it sometime - it doesn't always pay dividends, but when it does it's worthwhile.

We're Carlton, not Richmond - or Collingwood. Or Essendon*.

And bondi, you know what I think of Ron Evans... meaning not too much disrespect to the dead, but he can go eat a donkeys [edited to avoid bannage].

:-D

Hit. Nail. Head.

Love your work!! :-D

As always: a towering, luminous lighthouse of eostrogen to guide the right course against the dark, stormy seas of raging testosterone!!... God love ya MrsC!! 8) 8)

PS: And for the record I have always maintained that we needed two years of tanking.... to make up for two years of Black Fridays!!... and those 2 years are up!! Even Stevens!!

*** stands on his high horse and fist pumps both hands triumphantly***

PPS: that last PS probably wasn't necessary, and I perhaps shouldn't add any more fuel to the fire :P :P
