Time to compare a few stats at the half way mark of the season.

The following stats are based on the averages per game and given as a percentage difference, so for example if Carlton averaged 10 goals a game in 2006 and 15 goals a game in 2007 the figures would show up here as a 50% increase in goals kicked.

The first comparisons are comparing 2007 versus 2006, the second is comparing 2007 versus 2000 (our last very good year, these stats might show how the game itself has changed as well).

Disposals
2007 vs 2006 -6.2%
2007 vs 2000 -8.3%

- Disposals slightly down on average compared to last year and also to 2000.

Kicks
2007 vs 2006 -8.1%
2007 vs 2000 -6.1%

- Likewise with kicks.

Long Kicks
2007 vs 2006 6.9%
2007 vs 2000 -25.1%

- More long kicks compared to 2006, but much less compared to 2000.

Marks
2007 vs 2006 -19.4%
2007 vs 2000 7.9%

- A large fall in the number of marks from the team this year, taking slightly more marks than in 2000.

Contested Marks
2007 vs 2006 28.0%
2007 vs 2000 -44.1%

- We might be taking a lot less marks overall, but our percentage of contested marks has shot up this year compared to last. A lot less contested marks in 2007 compared to 2000, this is really reflective of an overall AFL trend of less contested footy over that time period.

Handballs
2007 vs 2006 -3.0%
2007 vs 2000 -11.4%

- not much difference.

Tackles
2007 vs 2006 10.7%
2007 vs 2000 -16.5%

- Tackling has improved quite a bit since last year.

Goals
2007 vs 2006 29.9%
2007 vs 2000 -14.1%

- A 30% improvement on last year really is substantial. Still lower than our 2000 average, that was a phenomenal year averagning 18 goals a game.

Hitouts
2007 vs 2006 12.8%
2007 vs 2000 91.1%

- Getting more hitouts this year. But as the 2000 comparison shows this stat is more a reflection on the amount of stoppages in a game than anything else. The 91% figure illustrates how much more congested the game is today (and also how much more work the ruckmen have to do these days).

Clearances
2007 vs 2006 13.9%
2007 vs 2000 52.0%

- Clearance work has improved, but again this figure can be influenced a lot by the number of stoppages each game.

Inside 50s
2007 vs 2006 13.3%
2007 vs 2000 -6.5%

- Getting the ball into the forward line a lot more this year.

Rebound 50s
2007 vs 2006 -11.3%
2007 vs 2000 13.5%

- Also the ball is not coming out of defence as much, BUT the opposiiton inside 50s are actually down 2% on last year yet the number of opposition goals scored is up 10%. This means our defence is allowing the opposition to score much more easily per entry into their forward 50. The biggest negative of the season so far.

Contested Possessions
2007 vs 2006 25.8%
2007 vs 2000 -36.0%

- lot more contested footy this year. 2000 figures reflect AFL wide change in the game.

Uncontested Possessions
2007 vs 2006 -10.4%
2007 vs 2000 -3.0%

- quite a bit less uncontested footy this year.

One Percenters
2007 vs 2006 6.0%
2007 vs 2000 -32.5%

- good to see the hard work on the field with an increase in one percenters. 2000 comparison is sobering viewing though.

Bounces
2007 vs 2006 -27.3%
2007 vs 2000 111.5%

- Lot less bounces this year, but bounces were very rare back in 2000!

'Skill'
2007 vs 2006 -12.0%
2007 vs 2000 4.0%

- This is a very rough estimate of 'skill', basically it compares the rate of errors per disposal year on year. The figures above show that we are making more errors on average pers disposal compared to last year. Yet overall the team is more 'skillfull' compared to 2000 (this however would have a lot to do with the more uncontested nature of the game in 2007 compared to 2000).

So that is it so far. Tomorrow I might include some more stats with regards to what we are allowing the opposition to do and maybe some individual player stats.

Thanks to pro-stats for all the stats used in this post.

Overall I'd give the team a B- so far this year. Good results, but could've done much better and plenty of room for improvement.

Not to mention the Crows and the scum.

But then again we did beat the tigers, dogs and the filth, when we were seemingly out of it. So it swings both ways I guess.

We did beat the scum, and we didn't beat the filth.

Essendon* = Scum

Collingwood = Filth :wink:

Just finished writing my students' reports :-D so happy to read someone else's!

Some very interesting stats here.

The tackles stats are always interesting. Great to see them up, but does that mean the opposition are getting more of the pill? :? I think it's more a case of our endeavour and tackling ability somehow. 8)

Surprised that our overall disposals are down on last year. I recall over the past few seasons, many games when our disposals were WAY less than our opponents. Looks like we must have chipped the ball around a lot more last year.

Glad to see the inside 50s on the up, considering there have been some games this year when this stat was far too low! More ball crumbing please!

Jarusa, are there any stats on bench rotations? Coaching blunders? Coaches admitting they made a blunder?

Thanks for posting these by the way.

You are welcome bluedog, unfortunately I don't have access to any stats on bench rotations etc.

The following stats are now not what Carlton is doing, but what Carlton's opposition are doing. These numbers will give an idea of how much of the ball etc the other team is getting each week

Disposals
2007 vs 2006 -0.6%
2007 vs 2000 18.0%

- The opposition were getting a lot less of the ball in 2000 which makes sense.

Kicks
2007 vs 2006 -0.3%
2007 vs 2000 10.5%

- Likewise with kicks.

Long Kicks
2007 vs 2006 2.7%
2007 vs 2000 -18.2%

- slightly more long kicks compared to 2006, but much less compared to 2000. Mirrors the figures for Carlton somewhat, probably showing an AFL wide trend since 2000.

Marks
2007 vs 2006 -2.2%
2007 vs 2000 40.6%

- 40% more marks to the opposition in 2007 compared to 2000, shows how the game has changed.

Contested Marks
2007 vs 2006 36.5%
2007 vs 2000 -44.1%

Handballs
2007 vs 2006 -1.1%
2007 vs 2000 30.6%

Tackles
2007 vs 2006 7.0%
2007 vs 2000 -24.1%

Goals
2007 vs 2006 10.6%
2007 vs 2000 32.8%

- Letting too many goals in this year. The 2000 figure gives an indication of what we should be aiming at, a 30% improvement.

Hitouts
2007 vs 2006 16.1%
2007 vs 2000 144.1%

- more a reflection on the amount of stoppages in a game than anything else.

Inside 50s
2007 vs 2006 -2.3%
2007 vs 2000 16.6%

- Opposition getting the ball in their forward line slightly less this year, however when you consider they are kicking 10% more goals the backline needs to improve.

Rebound 50s
2007 vs 2006 3.2%
2007 vs 2000 -1.5%

Contested Possessions
2007 vs 2006 42.0%
2007 vs 2000 -24.0%

- lot more contested footy from the opposition this year. 2000 figures reflect AFL wide change in the game.

Uncontested Possessions
2007 vs 2006 -4.4%
2007 vs 2000 27.0%

One Percenters
2007 vs 2006 11.3%
2007 vs 2000 27.7%

Bounces
2007 vs 2006 -25.7%
2007 vs 2000 52.8%

Thanks to pro-stats for all the stats used for calculations in this post.

I'd give the team a solid C so far this year. If the games dropped were indeed won this would probably be a B+ but there's still a long way to go.

I think the team can raise to a C+ or B- before the end of the year, but I really think it is 2009 where Carlton could hit the A's. Next year will be in that B realm but still in full development.

I really like how at the half-way mark we have Fevola on 35 goals, Fisher on 19 and Lappin, Waite and Whitnall on 14.

If we were to end the season with:
Fevola 70
Fisher 38
Lappin 28
Waite 28
Whitnall 28

I'd be rapted.

Nice work, Jarusa.
Don't you have anythind else to do?
I think we would have won a couple more with Stevens in so I am happy enough at this stage. I reckon we will do better second half based on morale improvement and a more balanced lineup. Injuries permitting of course.

I really should not be doing this stuff Blue Sombrero, I do have other things I should be doing!

... and to finish off a comparison of almost all the players who have played 2006 and 2007 and their output on average per game on the field year on year (thanks to finalsiren for the base data for these calculations).

Great to see we have some big improvers on last year. :-D

This same comparison was also done after round four.

I seem to recall a heap of posts before the season started that were along the lines of:

* We'd be happy if we were more competitive

* We'd be happy if we stopped the 100 point thrashings

* We'd be happy if we played the kids

* We'd be happy if we played a more attacking style of football

* We'd be happy with about 8 wins for the year

So regardless of the stats, I can see five BIG ticks out of five so far this season.

Ignoring the whinging that goes on here, I'm pretty happy where we are at present, I can see improvement from 2006 and 2005.

I reckon 2008 and 2009 should be great for this team and we can all start enjoying going to the footy again!! 8)
