you should be loving this. they're winning pointless games, the only thing these wins will achieve them is for them to keep finishing 6th-10th. wait till lloyd, lucas and hird all leave in a few years. these wins won't mean anything in a few years time but ours will.

PONTLESS???

They're in the top-5 for @#$%&!'s sake and with similar personnel to us! You know what that means? Their membership is going to continue to rise, they're going to get more sponsors, more money and better facilities, and that = success.

Take it from me, when Essendon* are winning games the glass ain't half-full. And mark my words, they will make the preliminary final AGAIN this year and annoy the shit out of the rest of the competition while they're at it. We can't wait for them to drop off because it ain't gonna happen.

God I hate these @#$%&! red-and-black pricks! :!:

TB3 they will play finals this year at the rate they are going - hardly pointless wins - think of the experience guys like Ryder and Monfires ,winderlich and stanton will gain playing finals - Ifd a Wizard wok finals is worht 10 games experience according to Pagan whats a real final worth

i'm still not convinced they will play finals. but if they do they'll be extremely lucky to get past the 1st round. lloyd, lucas, michael, hird and fletcher are carrying this team and they're just gonna miss out on bettter youngsters.

Dont get brain washed by the sugar coaters around Carlton web sites we take joy in gaining draft picks and think we are building a better future through it because we having nothing else to cling to. IT is total shite sure we get good kids but unless the kids learn how to win they will be nothing . If it was a simple matter of scouring the country for the best 18 year olds and throwing them together and watching their development, teams would have been doing it for years even before the draft - It dont work that way you have to get a group of players who want to win and want to win for each other - thats when you move forward -talent is one thing wanting to win is another - just ask St Kilda

As I recall we played finals in 2001 as well. And our new coach in 2003 guaranteed us of finals action in 2003.

This is the very logic that got us in the mess we found ourselves in between 2002 and 2006.

We eschewed the best 18 year olds in the country for years between during the 90s in favour of "mature" bodied older players from the SANFL, WAFL etc.

In the misguided and mistaken belief that we would get a head start on the clubs who were drafting immature 18 year olds.

The only problem is that these immature 18 year olds were the champions of the future and the mature older bodied players we were taking were the hacks that passed through the youth system that had taken all the decent footballers.

Agro where did I say to draft mature body players you get 4-5 new kids every year if you want - What I am saying is that you dont have to sit on the bottom to get them . It is not what position you are drafted at it what you do with that kid when you get him .

Clubs get their choice out of the top 50-100 kids every year - there are probably 10000 kids of that age group playing around the country you are already at the cream of the crop.

Jars will probably come on here and post his numbers of games against draft pick graph again but it is flawed as teams tend to give earlier draft picks a lot more opportunites that the late ones - you persist with a pick 4 but toss out a pick 45 if after 2 years he is not showing something .

The whole system need a re think in my opinion

No the point I was making that in the old days the cream of the crop used to play country football and WAFL/SANFL till they were around 20/22.

Then we would bring them to our club.

The problem was we during the 90s we didnt realise that the cream of crop were not getting to the senior ranks anymore - and we were still trying to take them from there.

Yes now we get our choice of the top 50 or 100 in each years National Draft - but the real cream (in particular over the past 5 years) has come from the top 10 - thats where the Kernahans, Williams, Bradleys are.

But speaking of spitting out Draft Pick 45 - lucky we gave - Kade more than a 2 seasons - but I bet if it was the Carlton of the 90s - he would have been delisted after 2.

Essendon* are consistently competitive
Even last year they lost something like 9 games by under 10 points
they are hard to shake and its all because of their experienced core-
we need to trade for one or two solid players in the 24-27 range to help develop the kids-

at the moment we have whitnall, stevens, kouta, lappin fevola- thats why we need bannister, wiggins in each week because our "leaders" dont enforce the contest like other teams.
look at port- they hardly needed to rebuild because they have the experienced core of wilson/cornes/tredrea/wakelin- hard bodied, seasoned players.
Thats why we needed to chase Guerra or a player of his ilk... were never going to go anywhere unless we dont have a seasoned core of players to lead us there... otherwise we'll be chasing our own tails forever.

About this time last year they were anchored to the bottom of the ladder. Look at them now. There's hope for Richmond yet.

Blues for the spoon 2007? We know how to win it.

Similar personnel to us??? Are you serious??? :garthp:

Players that they have who will be finished within the next couple of years: (i.e. these players are definately past their prime and will not get better)

Hird
Fletcher
Lloyd
Lucas
Michael
J Johnson
M Johnson
Campo
etc. etc.

Our list:

Kouta
Lappin
Lance (shouldn't be, but will be)

Look at the scum's best players tonight. Quite a few from this list are still holding the team together. Compare it last year: Lloyd and Hird were missing, the won 3 and 1/2 games and they almost pinched the spoon from us!!!!!

I agree that we have a similar second-tier group of players in the 24-28 age bracket, but look at our young guys :-D :-D

We have two number one draft picks, and a number two draft pick that are going to be stars, most would agree that they are already. We have a large number of developing players (some tried, some not) that will shine over the next few years.

Similtaneously, as Essenscum face their reality, we will be entering a new phase where our current 24-28 year olds will have had the oppourtunity to play 100-150 games unhindered, whilst theirs will still be looking to the aged leaders for guidence because they haven't had the chance to do it on their own.

Mark my words, in two years our "inexperienced, guidence lacking" core group will be a force to be reckoned with. And those young guns that we have now will be the first tier players setting the tone. :-D

I definately hate Essenscum the most!!!

Thye have scraped in the last three wins mostly due to tthe efforts of their old brigade and a good slice of luck. If they do make the finals they will be exposed and exit quickly.

They will be in real trouble in a 2-3 years when the older brigade has gone.
