Gibbs joins Paddy Ryder (Essendon*), Cameron Wood (Brisbane Lions), Tom Hawkins (Geelong), Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood), Joel Selwood (Geelong), Ricky Petterd (Melbourne), Jess Smith (Kangaroos), Shaun Higgins (Western Bulldogs) and Mitch Clark (Brisbane Lions) as players to be nominated for the award so far this season.

Only 4 kids there from last years draft.

It's all good...........cause Grigg wont play more than 10 matches for us this year meaning he can still win it next year!

Mark my words! Grigg will win it! Similar fashion to Pendlebury.

He isn't positive Sunday was his best game on a personal front, but he does believe the chance to play defence in recent weeks has accelerated his growth as a player.

"I thought I played alright. I didn't think I did anything too special, but I think I'm slowly getting better each week," he said.

"It's taken me a few games to get used to the pace of the game, but I've found that I've settled down now.

"I'm playing down back a lot. I've slowly been introduced into it, and I confident I've found my feet now."

Who would have thought? Seems that a bloke who's been developing young players for 25 years or so might know a bit more about how to develop a youngster than a mob of webjockeys. Who would have imagined that?

MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Carlton’s Bryce Gibbs wins Round 10 NAB AFL Rising Star Nomination

Bryce Gibbs from the Carlton Football Club is the Round 10 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.

Bryce played an important role in Carlton’s thrilling 10-point win over the Western Bulldogs at the MCG on Sunday. He played in defence with fantastic poise on veterans Jason Akermanis and Scott West and when the game was in the balance he was creative and composed, not missing a target.

The 188cm midfielder has settled well into the rigours of AFL football. He arrived at the Blues with a reputation of making good decisions in pressured situations and possessing great all-round skills. Last year he played a full senior season for Glenelg in the SANFL and finished third in club’s best and fairest.

The no. 1 selection in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft has played all 10 games this season, averaging 13 possessions a match, and was a member of Carlton’s winning NAB Cup team. He kicked a goal with his first AFL kick on debut against Richmond in Round One.

Bryce, who turned 18 in March, wears Carlton’s famous no. 4 guernsey and his leadership qualities have been recognised with a place on the team’s leadership group.

"We are really pleased with the progress Bryce is making. In his early games he's already displayed a maturity, composure and leadership attributes beyond his years and we look forward to his on-going development as a senior player at Carlton," Carlton Coach Denis Pagan said.

Bryce was a member of the 2005 AIS-AFL Academy Squad and represented South Australia at both Under 16 and Under 18 NAB AFL Championships. He was named ruck-rover in the 2006 All-Australian team. Recruited from Glenelg in South Australia, Bryce played junior football with the Plympton Football Club in suburban Adelaide.

He is Carlton’s first NAB AFL Rising Star nominee this season.

Bryce Gibbs is available for interview today,
Tuesday June 5 at 3.30pm

Bert Numa Room, first floor, Carlton Social Club

MC Labour Park

haha! nice post!

Yeah, he has said it a few times actually. And that's fine. I'm all for him playing down back, in fact i reckon it's his best posistion. But as a true full back in some situations has left me wondering what the point is.

So yeah, play him down back.....but not out of position. Half-back / flank is his best spot ala- Scotland or Heath Shaw or Luke Hodge type roles. That'll be where Bryce stars in years to come.

You can play gibbs in the backline to get a bit of experience but ultimately hes a midfielder/winger. He was drafted as the best midfielder/winger in the draft.

Carlton is short in quality mjidfielders. I would hate to see him like walker for 3 years playing a backmen/tagger type player.

As soon as Gibbs played on the wing in the 3rd quarter against bulldogs he looked awesome. In the backline you are just wasting talent.

Gibbsy well done

I thought he was drafted as the best player in the draft.

Gibbs played forward, back and midfield in the SANFL.

A number 1 draft pick getting an NRS nomination.
Who would have imagined that!

I'm sure Bryce deserved his nomination because he is the best nominee this week.

Well done Bryce.

Happy for him to play HBF but I don't like him in the BP and FB on small forwards. If he's taken back there, move someone else onto that man so that he can create off HB Gilbee style.

For all the desire on TC for GIBBS to win the NRS, a guy by the name of Judd never won it.

He did however win the Brownlow and is on track again to win it this year - this is what GIBBS' future holds.

I have foreseen it - it is his destiny!

Well done Bryce.

How surprising that you would miss the point - "but he does believe the chance to play defence in recent weeks has accelerated his growth as a player". But don't worry - I realise you understood the point but you just find it easier to misrepresent it. Wonderful edit of the quote to help you along ... simply magnificent. Same old tactic. A great insight into your integrity there. ;-)

Agree.....dont want to see him on Ebert this week.....HBF doing the Gilbee is the way for him to be used or on the wing where he can play with some freedom and use those fine delivery skills...

every week....he's improving by 4.3%........but not going

betterrrr.........!

so he's played 9 games now......which means i've got
him at about 38.7%...............!

SO.......if he plays 22 games this year......?

we STILL won't see that 100%............it'd be around 94.6%.......
so come the 2nd round next year........?

BAM.......we're going for 103.TWO%.............!

that's some good % right there.............!
