He will be scrutinised closely and expected to deliver being such a hyped up NO 1 pick and it wont be easy for him but thats the nature of the business.

Who is the best number 1 pick to date? In about 20(?) years of the draft the best would probably Jeff White or Reiwoldt or maybe Hodge?

That's pretty much two generations of footballers and not one of them has been a genuine superstar of the game (Hird, Voss, Buckley status). To say the bar for any one #1 pick is at a level that the 20 before him haven't reached is just silly.

Buckley would have been the number one pick if it were not for Queensland zoning.

In two years (when Gibbs is the same age as Buckley was when he was drafted), I think we'll have a much better idea of how good he's going to be, and where the bar should be set.

Is this correct?

At AIS, Gibbs was sprint tested at 2.7 in 10mtrs? in top 5 of rookies at camp?

At draft camp, Hampson ran 20 m in 3 seconds. The fastest guys do it in around 2.8 seconds.

Going on those figures, it's unlikely that a fast time for 10 m is 2.7 seconds. And 2.7 seconds for 20 metres would be a record time, you'd think.

It appears the record at draft camp for the 20 metres is 2.79 set by Danyle Pearce in 2004.

Last year's draft camp results for the 20 metres were as follows:
    Nathan Krakouer - 2.83 sec
    Nathan Djerrkura - 2.90 sec
    Nathan Brown - 2.91 sec
    Simon Hogan - 2.91 sec
    Brock O'Brien - 2.92 sec
    Shaun Grigg - 2.92 sec
    Ben Reid - 2.93 sec
    Ben Ross - 2.94 sec
    Clint Benjamin - 2.95 sec
    Travis Boak - 2.96 sec

See http://www.footygoss.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=30799&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

Interesting that Benjamin also finished 3rd in both the repeat 30 metre sprints and the standing vertical jump tests

IIRC correctly, Gibbs might have recorded a 3 second result for the 20 metres, but he was injured and pulled the pin after the first day of testing. So the draft camp wasn't an ideal test of his speed.

I'm not sold on Bryce Gibbs yet

I am!! He's a beauty!!

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pp-carlton-blues--bryce-gibbs

Here he's ranked 4th in marks, disposals, kicks and handballs. 8th in tackles. The rabbits in front of him are 2nd year players and Selwwod who plays in a side that allows him to play where ever whenever. Sure Selwood is a gun, but I reckon Gibbs is better.

They're a lucky bunch of SOBs down there, they got FS selections and Selwood.

I love the way Gibbs' fist seems to make it under the opposition's arm pit without interferring.

That's McKay like

Thanks for that.
Here is a profile of Gibbs

1. Bryce Gibbs - Carlton
More of a natural footballer than an athlete but possesses freakish skills. Played senior footy for Glenelg in 2005 and 2006. One of only two South Australians that made the U18 AA side this year and was named SA’s MVP. Genuine midfielder, not lightning quick, but football ability and awareness make up for that. Can also be effective as a goalkicking wingman. By far the best midfield prospect in the draft pool and the Blues will look to give the likes of Stevens and Scotland more assistance.

And hes become a backmen under Pagan :)

Today we saw a glimpse of a very bright future, actually I lie it was much more than a glimpse it was the first section of the highlights reel.

Gibbs was finally allowed to play further up the ground which he did with aplomp while still being able to beat his man in almost every contest.

If he doesn't win the NRS then the AFL is still as anti-Carlton as it has ever been

All hail a new deity

Please. Love Gibbsy, doing a sensational job, but yet to be nominated and right now Pendlebury is a shoe-in. Maybe if Gibbsy rips it up in the second half of the year he might win it, but not the frontrunner at the moment

Today proved to mw 4 things.

1. Walker must play in the middle
2. Gibbs needs to play HBF not HBP
3. Bannister can play on the other HBF
4. Wiggins is a lot better than I have ever given him credit for (eatign humble pie)

OH...and

5. Ando is going to be a legend

Terrific game, poise, tackling, he wins almost every one on one contest, excellent skills

What was his effective possession percentage today?

What can you say, the kid is a genius.

It's kind of corney reffering to a player doing a matrix move but that's what Gibbs does, all the time. Absolute freak.

You'd hope they'd give him the nomination this week but if they don't who cares? We know we've got a player.

NHe is a pure footballer isnt he? Not really quick, not overly big, just gets the footy and kows what to do with it when he does, then he has the tools to help him. Would be a good footballer with or withour good coaching. Pure class.

My dad used to say...you know when your watching a great footballer when they make everything look like it is in slow motion.

Gibbs puts everything in slow motion...a bit like a Mr Williams did.
