Interest snippet in the Aged yesterday where Swann stated that one of Pagan or Mitchell would not be at Carlton next year.

Unbelieveable comment to make so publicly.

Whilst I can't see DP staying for another year, I don't think Mitchell has earnt the right to stay either and assuming he doesn't get the top job next year, will the new coach be 'forced' to take him as an assistant?

Interesting times ahead.

Disagree. I think Mitchell has done more to earn him the right to stay than go - although not picking up a VFl premiership, since taking over the club he has taken the team to a mid-table finish in 2004, a 3rd place finish in 2005 and (although they disappointed in the finals) they took out the minor premiership last year.

I think you are on the right track with the assistant coaching role, as I can't see Pratt and Co. giving him the nod for seniors coach when there IMO are plenty more out there to be cosidered.

On the same vein I can't see Mitchell coaching the Ants forever, if an opportunity at another club comes up I reckon he'd go for it.

I didn't see the snippet you describe. But it seems that Swann is stating the obvious.

If Pagan does coach next year, there's no way that Mitchell would have his contract renewed. Especially if Carlton fields its own reserves team in the VFL to increase it's ability to develop and direct its young players.

My guess (and I stress this isn't on the basis of any inside knowledge) is that Swann would not have been impressed to be told by Sticks that he'd confirmed Mitchell's contract and he was beyond Swann's control. Certainly, some of the reports from Wilson and others around the time when Swann came in suggested that his hands were tied.

But if Pagan goes, then I doubt that Swann should be taken as suggesting that Mitchell will get another contract. As some have been suggesting, you'd think that Pratt would be throwing everything at the best coach, whoever that might be. It would be mind-boggling if that coach was not given carte blache to bring in his own people. He'll have the right to bring in his own assistants, and reserves coach. Some attempt might be made to persuade the incoming coach about the merits of some of the assistants and Mitchell, but it's just impossible to believe that their retention would be a deal-breaker.

My guess is also that an incoming coach would be very reluctant to keep a reserves coach who is very close to a number of Directors (and he's a close friend of Sticks and Gleeson) and who has already applied for his boss' job at the end of 2006. Pagan's reaction has made it clear to everybody in the football industry that he regards Mitchell as disloyal. Only an incoming coach who likes and trusts Mitchell would keep him. Otherwise he's dog meat.

Swan was asked the same question on MMM. If Pagan and Mitchell can continue to work together like his next year he didn't give a straight answer and then when questioned again he agreed this couldn't continue.

Its hard to take Swanny serious at the moment because we don't know how much power he has at the club at the moment because when he arrived at Carlton him and Icke where supposed to solve the problem but instead let Sticks promise to Mitchell that he wont be sacked stand.

I heard the interview on 3AW and I would be surprised if Swan was quoted in saying that. He didn't say that one would go but did say there will be a change at the end of the season.

This could mean a number fo things, like Mitchell moving to another role other than VFL coach. Bullants might be a stand alone club and he may remain with the Bullants.

Caro after the interview assumed that what the change meant was one would leave.

Though Swan did not say that.

If I had an anti Pagan filter, SB, I don't think anything would get through

Thanks for the link.

Clayman, you might be right that Swann didn't actually say that they won't both be at the club next year, but it seems that he was at least implying it. And even if he didn't say it or imply it, we all know to a certainty that this is the truth. There's a big chance they will both be gone at the end of the year.

Blueboy8, I agree that Swann would have been blind-sided by that, but the decision about recontracting Mitchell is now well within his power. He was presented with a done-deal when he arrived, and no doubt Michael Malouf (his predecessor) had rubber stamped the deal. But if the Board tries to tie his hands again and override his decision, there'll be a showdown. Sticks would have to be very careful about taking him on again. Pratt didn't move heaven and earth to get him to cross over from the dark-side only to have Sticks force him into walking.

He actually says neither.

He "Thinks" it's not ideal but "it's working"...
Good "politician speak".

To be honest, I think it wioll give at end of the year, but I'm more interested in the prospect of a reserves team.
If the AW commentators/Age journos were interested in footy rather "desperate housewives" type gossip they may have asked about his thoughts on the "Reserves" issues.,...but an opportunity lost.
By the way, I was told that from a mate's hairdresser's door bitch from her favourite night club that...

I agree that if DP gets shown the door, which is the most likely scenario going by the "8-10 win" comments by RP, then it will be up to the new senior coach if Mitchell gets a new contract.
Then again Mitch might be the new senior coach.

The thought of Braddles as senior coach intrigues me the most. You'd think he'd have a running/attacking type of philosophy.

:?:

Spot on Bill. No where in the article does it say that that Swann says one will go. All he is doing is stating the situation as it is. Poor journalism by The Age to suggest that Swann was hinting that one of them won't be there next year.

I'd be surprised if either are at Carlton next season.

At the end of the interview, Swann was asked "will one of them be gone at the end of the year" or words to that effect.

Swann answered "I think thats a fair conclusion" or similar.
Even though we all know its quite obvious, I thought it was a surprising remark to make.

Certainly the current working arrangment is very poor and reflects badly on the Administration and senior coach. It must be changed. Just when is the big question? What coaches are currently available that could step into the senior or reserves role? Ratten could take on the reserves and Daniher the seniors although neither would probably do it out of loyalty to the current occupants. I think that the President would move both on today if it wasn't going to cause major problems for the team. Also given that we still have 13 games left 3 or 4 more wins may make a lot of difference to the speed of the decision.

I think the decision re a new coach next year has already been made. Pratt has made important decisions re the admin structure so why wouldn't he have done the same re the footy operations.

We really have little to gain by making a change mid season. the greatest lift will probably come by announcing a change at either at absolute seasons' end or in the last couple of rounds. Help with re-signing players and give a boost into the new year.

For what it's worth I don't think either pagan or mitchell will be at Carlton next year.
