StKilda's progress is looking a little dubious at this stage. Indeed North have won a premiership during the period StKilda last "won" a wooden spoon.

I'm not saying any time limit (and never have) - I am saying it will be quicker with higher draft picks.

You tell me how long if we finish 10th for the next 5 years.

That's because, the weakest link at St Kilda is their coach.

I think we will have a bad year in 2006, but better in 2007, but still not make the eight perhaps missing by a game or so.

The fortieth anniversary of our 1968 premiership might well be substantially better.

One of the smartest things Pagan said was how footy was played 80% above the shoulders. The most discernible case in points are Richmond and Hawthorn.
I posed a few weeks ago whether draft picks were the reason for the resurgence of the Tigers. The answer is probably no, but they certainly had a MAJOR impact on the mindset of the players.
It is this positive vibe that is, I believe, 90% of the reason for both Hawthorn and the Tiges doing so well. It is also the reason for Melbournes turnaround- whilst Sylvia and McLean have been handy additions to a pretty good side, it was the essence of the exuberance that they bring to the footy club that has really been a key ingrediant to their time at the top.
Further evidence of the mental facet, and its overbearing role in the formline of a football side is seen with us. Whilst there are doubters on this site about how good we actually are, we were playing some pretty bloody good footy during the Wizard Cup. This was no concidence- we played with heart, but most importantly we played as if we believed in ourselves and in each other. After a side matched our intensity and hence sapped our confidence as seen in Round 1, players arent as sure of foot with their disposal, dont back their teammates in as much, begin to play within themselves and go into their shell.

The Hawks and the Tigers are not a better football side on paper then we are. Not even close. But they have enthusiastic young coaches, some enthusiastic young kids and a positive football environment.

At the moment, we dont. Some good kids will help this- perhaps not for their ability straight away, but for the vibe they bring to the footy side.

Can you tell me the difference in terms of draft performance and games played between pick three and pick seven ?

Or pick six and pick two ?

is there any analysis done on it ? I'd be inetersted in the numbers, my guess would be, there is no difference between finishing 10th on the ladder and 14th on the ladder

This is a pretty rough sort of indicator of 'quality', but anyway.

Thanks Jarusa - I was busy typing my repsonse (saying that I hope Jarusa can shed some light here  ).

My point Leonidas (and might I add what a glorious loser Leonidas was  ) is that you need lower draft picks to improve your list - finishing 10th with Picks 7 and Picks 19 is not going to help you QUICKLY.

So pick three is the best pick. Pick 6 and pick 9 are shockers. I don't know why though. 8)

Yeh, and a full back + gun midfielder that fell into their laps.

So your saying Stevens is not a gun midfielder then ? I seem to remember that he fell into our laps.

2 players don't make a team...

i think at the moment a successful team needs some luck, a good coach and heaps of confidence. ability?? sure it helps, but not as important. look at collingwood in 02-03, sydney now look ok, richmond now, hawthorn now etc..

Why have we slipped from last year? We have virtually the same players that we now call the worst list in the AFL. Were we the worst list last year?

Actually they have nore 1st round draft picks than any other club (including St Kilda and we're still waiting for them to win that premiership. Not looking too good atm!)
