On such an big day for the club, we decided to track the fortunes of our two remaining 1995 premiership players throughout the game. Despite similar stats, the story couldn't have been more different.

One, the Captain, fought hard for 3 quarters - demanded the ball out of packs and had 5-6 clearances on his own account despite half of them being ruined by poor disposal from the recipient of Kouta's work. He played ruck, centre, FF, and even a bit at CHF in the last quarter, albeit unscuccessfully, each role trying to fill the void from absent friends (injured or absent minded). I thought he was brilliant.

The other, the vice captain, didn't fight hard but was useful on the fast break. When, on the odd occasion we scored the turnover in the back half, like when Carrots found his feet in the last quarter and really started running, Campo would be a good target for he was clear of his man. In the first half though, and in particular in the third quarter, Campo would still be well clear and was waiting for the tunorvers that never came. He was out wide, demaning the ball, but in a different way - demanding it from those who had to fight hard to win it. When we turned it over going forward, you could see 10 seconds later Campo strolling through the middle, picking up no one.

This morning's paper showed similar stats but no one put Campo in the best.

I read with interest all the Campo posts over the past few weeks; how much is he worth, where can he play, what should we do... and really was a bit indifferent towards it... until yesterday. The guy is a floater and should be pulling his weight alot more. It felt like an unofficial go slow on his behalf yesterday, I was very disappointed. Kouta, club champion and captain, can hold his head up high. Campo, well, I think he should be banned from the D50 as he gets too many easy kicks. He should be played HFF where his ability to find space may be useful.

IMO Scott Campo is a liability, he was lucky enough to start his career in a good side where he had quality players around him & he didn't attract the attention that he has for the past couple of years.

Now that he has been required to carry a greater share of the load he has been found wanting, he is undisiplined, his disposal is ordinary to say the least how many times does he miss a target or just bomb the ball long only to see it turned over.

He provides no leadership to the younger players & sets no example for his team mates.

As far as I am concerned once his current contract expires it's see ya Campo time.

He had a monster dummy spit in the last quarter too - standing deep in the forwardp ocket and the kick went to the top of the goal square...

I recall in the mid 1990's, back when there were rumours that despite success there was a bit of tension in the team, that sticks and sos used to call him 'HBR' for handball received!

molsey.. leave the Campo witch hunt to me... i get very territorial... :P
Good player in a good side is Campo... but useless as tits on a bull if you need a scrap...

Worse thing is he does nothing by example but mouths off to opposition players, umpires (wasting productive time) and our kids...he always runs past the kids for a handball.. cos he knows they will give it to their vc.

In my opinion Campo is the reason Stevens has gone flat.

Look i think something drastic might have to happen here come end of year....
Hes a man that just cannot put his heart into anything at the moment... when he does its just fleeting.

Worse case scenario is we save ourselves way in excess of 600k.

Id rather give it to the poor.

Molsey and Synbad, can't have a bag-Camporeale-for-good-reason party without me!

I'm in.

Ineffectual yesterday and when a goal needs to be kicked like it had to be at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, it has to be done. It wasn't. He poked at it and didn't kick through the ball. It was to the Heatley Stand end, the crowd would have gone wild and we would have been 13 points down. That was the most disappointing aspect IMO.

Just to be clear though, I didn't write this to be anti-Campo. I wrote it to point out the differences between our 2 most esteemed players. I don't really go for this bag-the-player approach, but in a 1 on 1 comparison yesterday Kouta was brilliant and Campo was a wanderer.

Kouta's post match stuff was emotional, well said although he is never going to be an incisive commentator. We're going to miss him in a few years. Can play just about anywhere, love the man.

Just on leadership, team spirit etc, the difference in body language between the 2 teams at the start of the game while the national anthem was being sung was markedly different. The entire Melb team had arms linked. Our players all stood there apart from each other like a group of individuals that weren't a team.

I'm sick of this anti-Campo bias and agendas.

Since when is Campo an inside player? He's a bloody outside player we've known that all along. Campo isn't one to go in and get it, what's new? He hangs outside, he's a receiver, whatever...the point is that you're asking him to do a role that he's never done before and completely against his makeup as a footballer. He hangs wide...so what, at least he takes some intiative to send the bloody thing forward.

Why is it such a crime to take the handball from others? You do know that OTHER PLAYERS are allowed to do likewise, not just Campo? There isn't a rule saying only Campo can receive the easy handball...see to receive this easy possession you have to make yourself available in the first place! How can it necessarily be a bad thing?! It makes no sense. Campo is one of the team's better kicks, it then makes more sense for him to kick it than it would other players. But Campo isn't the only one that gets these easy touches and OTHER PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED TO DO the same as Campo! If nobody does it we don't go forward and footy will be too static.

Re Leadership, has anyone ever actually thought that Campo is simply not a leader by nature and we're forcing him to be something he shouldn't be? Is it a crime for Campo not to be the best leader in the world? Let's face you all reckon just because he's the second oldest player in a young side his leadership skills should be unquestionable? WHAT IF HE'S JUST NOT A LEADER BY NATURE? There's nothing wrong with that, how many players are genuine leaders?

I get disappointed with Campo as well sometimes but you have to rationalise it. Just because he's 30 years old or whatever doesn't mean he has to be a leader. We just have nothing else so we've unfairly placed a mantle on a player who by nature can't live up to that mantle, not through any fault of his own. I'm sure he tries but you're either a leader or you're not a leader and it's fairly obvious that by definition Campo is hardly the quintessential leader. Anything wrong with that?

I have got to say that Campo was one of our better players yesterday. All sides need their outside receives as well as their in-and-under types. Campo is doing no more than what Bradley did for years. Obviously, he doesn't quite have the class of Bradley.

To me our older players were our better players yesterday. Sure they all had different roles. It is time for our second tier players to start taking games by the scruff of the neck. I am talking about the likes of Fev, Houla, Scotland and Waitey. Sure they have put in good performances on occasions, but to actually win a game for us. It was a pity that Barnaby and Wiggo went off early.

What I would give for someone like Shane Tuck to come through the ranks. He doesn't always have great disposal, but he is young, can run and can get the ball. You are always in front when you can do that.

Funny that.

Because this "let's sack Pagan" business - isn't that very much Richmond?

We're a team of receivers (Kouta excepted) 2005, Camporeale was supposed to have remodelled his game in the last couple of years. He's reverted back to the old ways. That is unfortunate.

Huh? That doesn't make much sense really.

Then again, I guess you can "categorically" remember me posting a "sack Pagan" comment.
