Nah honestly I'm not trying to antagonise or be a smart ass. It's a serious question. I've never been one to dislike any player that puts on a Carlton jumper. So I'm curious to know what a supporter, who clearly dislikes a player, feels/thinks when that player is doing well. Fair question I would have thought.
Whitnall was a "man-child" during his junior TAC days and dominated - he came into the AFL and was able to play around Kernahan, Spalding in his first year - he was an effective second/third forard, in 2000 when he made All-Australian he was able to play off Hamill - who created the space and room for him. Yes I cheered for him. I cheered for him after his game icing goal in the 1999 Preliminary Final.
However since 2002 when he really needed to step up and be the go to forward man - he has been found wanting. His pre-season preparations have generally always been found wanting - his fitness levels have always been poor (yes he started off like a rocket against Brisbane but where was he in the second half).
And this year, when we would be better served putting games into Edwards and Hartlett (lets see if they can play), seriously playing Kennedy at CHF, instead of him playing a mish mash or roles between Forward Pocket and Half Forward Flank. We have Lance Whitnall just taking up space or going up to the back line as a sweeping defender because he is too slow and not up to it to do the things a quality CHF can do.
There have been plenty of players to dislike wearing a Carlton jumper over the years - O'Rielly, Mansfield, McKernan over the past 6 or 7 just to name a few.
I haven't seen Lance do anything much of value over the past few years other than his brief cameo tandem with Fevola during the 2005 Wizard Cup campaign - where I thought he was quite good (after what was reported doing a lot of pre-season work on his own) - but he soon slipped back into his old ways.
Lance does nothing for the side as a leader, he sets no example to the younger players, he is one of last players on the training track and one of the last off it.
Lance has done nothing over the past few years to contradict my views or my opinion of him - he has won a best and fairest, but over the past few years he joins illustrious company like Corey McKernan and David Teague (whom I dont dislke by the way - he is a good ordinary footballer who has made the most of his ability and he trains his guts out), but he should not be a best and fairest winner at our club.
If you clearly believe that you have never disliked a player in a Carlton guernsey then I challenge you to say the same about any team mate you have played with over the 20 years of high level/quality football you have played since you were 11.
