We are in no mans land waiting for something to happen.....our younger kids hav not impacted apart from Murphy and we are waiting for the messiah to lead us from the wilderness.
Truth is we need a superstar like Jonothan Brown or Wayne Carey to weld the team together and get the best out of the list, a leader with superstar ability who commands respect and rises to the occassion and lifts mediocre players.

To get that player/s you need the early picks or some great father/son choices.......no choice but to play for those picks as I dont see any superstars of that nature on the horizon from our list.

Only other way is to buy one ...ie Judd ......Eddie tried with Brown...

at some point we are going to have a year where we finish 9th-12th again, and end up with pick 6-10 again. it has to happen cos it will be a stepping stone. in that year there will be 3 or 4 kids that will the 'hottest' thing going around in football that we will miss out on. i guess my question is at what point do we start hoping for the stepping stone year to happen?

i like a lot of us thought that 2004 was going to be our 'stepping stone' year, but it turned into a disaster since. now we look and think wow we could have had deledio and franklin. i just hope that when our stepping stone year happens next time we continue the upward trend for good.

While I disagree vehemontly with the concept of tanking, I accept that it's more than likely that we'll be staring at that priority pick anyway (doesn't mean we should just let it happen though).

So the question is who do we think will be the big pickup for next year? Is there anyone at this early stage who stands out and looks a likely #1?

looks like a weak draft so far.. i would get the best kid available and trade our next first rounder pick 3 or 4 for a top line mature player under 25y.o

I would still take 2 picks in the top 3 if we can pull it off.

As in terms of players leading us out of the darkness I believe it will be the two boys Gibbs and Murphy.

I wouldn't be suprised if Gibbs becomes a better player than Murphy, infact I can see it already even though Murphy is dominating.

Remember that bloke Buckley who led the pies out of the woods??

Bit early to call the draft weak, theres a bit of talent around and even if it was early picks become even more crucial with a thin talent pool.

In the year of Carltons Resurgence, Gibbs does indeed have a stellar season.....

It isnt essential, but theres no doubt that picks 1 and 3 in 2007 would set us up beautifully for that joyous near future season...

Yeah, I could never forget the look of joy on his face when he held the premiership cup aloft after leading Collingwood to salvation.

Point taken Camelboy, However had Brisbane (thank god) not of been the once in a lifetime force it was, do you doubt it would of happened?

Buckley gave the pies leadership in a big way.

I just think it is incredibly sad that we are talking like we have closed up shop for this season already.

Such a shame -but i guess when you put Whitnall at centre half-back at every opportunity, have a match committee with no clue (when is Walker going to be given free reign?), promote the wrong players and keep players with potential out, have no willingness to turn weaknesses in team placements into strengths... then you have to live with the consequences of one's actions.

Lets look at the following 4 rounds. We play the following for what I think will be these results

Kangaroos @ Carrara – LOSS
Adelaide @ TD – 50/50
Bulldogs @ MCG – LOSS
Port Adelaide @ TD – LOSS

So worse case scenario is that we lose all 4 and approach our next semi-winnable games against the dawks in round 12 at 2 wins, 9 losses. Do we then consider the year a write off? Is it unreasonable to suggest that given our form and available personnel that this projection is possible? I want my team to win every game right through to the GF if possible but some of us have lost a grip on reality with where our teams is at. We are coming off 2 wooden spoons so we didn’t exactly enter the year flying! We lose one midfielder (albeit, our most important one) and we are barely able to field a competitive running group. God forbid MM should sustain an injury!!!

So instead of ranting that supporters shouldn’t be discussing or intimating about acquiring the PP and how to improve a fairly dire situation, let us hypothesise and contemplate the merits of exploiting our circumstances as best as possible. And boy pick 1 would be pretty bloody handy given our plight…

BTW, this isn't a go at you Norm Smith, just a general comment

Guys like Sticks, Big Nick, Pratt, Parko, Rats, Braddles would all be absolutely ashamed to hear this kind of talk from Carlton supporters :(

These guys lived in a great time when a club could go and recruit a player directly without having to negotiate the drip-fed mechanism that is the draft.

They were a part of a bygone era that has no relevance to today. Not only were we reluctant to embrace the new system which has culminated to where we have been for the last few years (ridiculously compounded by draft penalties!!!), but we have exacerbated our plight by poor selection when it has been our turn.

I want a flag. And am happy for the club to do whatever it takes to get one asap. Including acquiring a PP this year

We would all love another first round draft pick this year. But isn't it a bit early to be even considering it? It just makes us look like losers. Btw, there are other options. Maybe we should be discussing which players are potential trade bait to aquire another first round pick. Personally I'm not a fan of talking trades this early on in the year either, but I hate talking about playing to lose more.

No one would knock back the PP if it came our way. But playing to lose is unacceptable. Developing the team will only occur by playing winning football.

yeah get past the next 3 to 4 games first.. if we don't win any of them then it's on the cards.

No, no, no winnie. Have we learnt nothing. You should never trade your 2 first round picks. They are what you build longevity with. Players and multiple club deals is where "smart" clubs capitalise from. Never your top picks, even for Judd.

I repeat I would rather have 2 x Danial Kerr's/Lenny Hayes than 1 x Judd in my team, wouldn't you? Smart recruiting is where it's at, fail there and you fail, full stop.

Good idea.
Why wait that pesky TAC cup season to get into full swing or the national championships or the draft camp.

Weak draft you say? Lets make an informed decision now!
