This is one for Jarusa, but I'd love to know our stats on conceding goal scoring opportunities late in quarters each game. Tonight, despite the win against the Kangaroos we conceded at least 5 shots on goal in the last minute of every quarter, except the 3rd. From memory those 5 shots cost us 4 goals.

I'm not sure if it's just my memory playing tricks on me, but I'd say we concede shots on goal in the last minute of at least two quarters pretty much every game we play. I'd love to hear some theories on why we seem to do this and how we can combat it to ensure our defence holds up in the closing stages of each quarter of footy we play.

Having taken the Blues at $4.65 to win by 1-19 I didn't have an issue with it late in the game :P

Hey CB that's a good call - my brother and i were thinking the same thing while we were watching this game. We both thought that the last few years this has been a huge problem..

Right on brother! I grabbed the Blues against the Scum at $2.70 for the win and almost $5 for the 1-19... and I got it again *like your good self!* yesterday...

Who would have thought, a minute and 9 secs remaining - Blues 27 points up... a few late goals in this case didn't hurt my wallet at all... 8)

I thought I had blown my money with 2 minutes to go. I cheered louder for North's last 2 goals than any of ours.

Funny story about all this.

Was at the pub with a number of TCers & my gf watching the match. With about a minute to go North got what she & I thought was a supergoal, which would have bought it back to 18 points. I tried to contain my excitement  . Naturally I was a bit cheesed off when it was deemed only a six-pointer, and the margin still 21.

Then, incredibly, with about 14 sec remaining, North whisks it out of the centre. My girlfriend swears she heard me tell Bentick to piss off out of the way  . Goal! At the siren everyone was happy but she & I were over the moon, carrying on & punching the air like we'd either just won with a kick after the siren, or I'd had $1000 on it. Of course neither were true; all I'd laid down was a lousy $5 for a collect of $23.25    (ain't I despicable!!)

Funnily enough I also put $5 on us at the start of the NAB Cup at odds of $23 - just for a bit of fun really, wasn't expecting much

None of these betting windfalls are helping to explain or devise theories as to why we concede so many shots on goal late in so many quarters.

:P

Off the top of my head, with no statistical analysis to back me up whatsoever, I think you'll find it's varied from year to year CB. Last year was the opposite; notorious for slow starts to quarters.

I'd say it's a mental thing, players have accomplished the fast start so relax in the final minutes and a few have let some goals slip. Just something the coaches can have a word to them about if it becomes a trend in the season proper.

Likewise, without the stats to back up my claims, I reckon this trend has been around for a few years now. I seem to recall in quite a lot of games muttering to myself, oh great it's deep into time on, how many goals will we concede.

At risk of sounding like McAvaney - anyone able to pull up any stats from this year on goals conceded in the last 60 sec of a quarter?

If we're not far and away the clubhouse leaders in that department I'll do something suitably stupid.

I reckon in the first 3 qtrs against brisbane it happened, it certainly happened a couple of times yesterday...

Anyone able to help throw some facts around hypothesis A? Jarooce?

I reckon you might me on the ball, and I reckon it may have been the case last year as well.

But absolutely no facts to back it up.

If anyone wants to pay for the commercial fees imposed by champion data so I can find out just email jarusa at iinet dot net dot au
