Just wondering everyone, whether we made any promises to the two boys that were out of contract re: Pagan's presence at the club beyond this year. More importantly, DID Bret Thornton ask not to be played at FB and did we promise him this because otherwise I do not understand the decision to play Santy there, he needs to learn as the third best defender

Thornton would have done no better on Gehrig on Friday than the Irishman did. Thornton had one one-on-one contest with Gehrig, was easily outbodied, just fortunate it was an ordinary kick that went over thier heads. O'Hailpin needs to play on the Gorilla's, trouble is Thornton doesn't seemed to have benefitted all that much from moving to a weaker forward.

I like the idea of having Setanta as Full Back.............but there are a few people that realise that he hasn't played 20 games yet so your gonna have to monitor him & make a change if he is beaten, which he clearly was on Friday night.

No point making a change with 10min to go when his opponent has kicked 6. Should have been done earlier.

But that was pretty much the story of the night wasn't it?

Have a look at the game and the manning up. Stkilda had free players everywhere and space for Gehrig to run into, their players were constantly on the move. Santy had little chance of stopping Gehrig, I am bemused why people are bagging him.
The reason why Santy is fullback is to learn how to deal with the gorillas...Thornton is a 3rd tall defender only.
The Irishman has been fantastic given his lack of grounding in the game and its learn at the coalface stuff.......

Look at what happening up the ground...thats where the problems are...

Agreed. And that stems from what's happening in the coach's box.

We are playing O'Hailpin at FB not because he's our best option this year but for 2009 and beyond. I thought he was ordianry on Friday. Gave Gehrig too much room. Needs to learn to play closer. These guys are losing him quickly on the lead. He'll learn and benfit.

Thornton would have done a better job but it doesnt help us long term does it. Thornton is better as a rebounding 3rd defender/ support for Setanata

It is official...

I have never disagreed with George Harris.

I have only mildly disagreed with Elwood.

Good call. Players like Brown and Gehrig are going to outmuscle the best of defenders at times, but it's the little cheapies that hurt - short chip passes that Setanta is too far away to counter.

On the $$$$ EB1, too much space down back, coaches are working out that they need to isolate Setanta down back because he can't read the play as well. Setanta has been very good, a better game plan similar to how other sides strangle our forwards would provide valuable support and fill in the gaps where his opponent is running to. The problem is up the ground!

Agree with Elwood too, if Carlos turned out for the Aints instead and lined up on Fev he would have had 3-4 team mates helping him out all night long
