So the anzac day game will be in Perth or Sydney or Adelaisde each year?

yeah, nah!

We do need a blockbuster game each year, something to commemorate something special...

I know, we should play in the grand final every year to celebrate the 16 flags we have won!
:-D
Whos in?

That is a superb idea chucky, not sure if it's all yours, I hope it is, but that is PERFECT! I'm going to send that one in to the AFL I reckon.

Almost as perfect as Carlton v Richmond on Good Friday. ;)

Nope, not my idea. The SANFL do it.

Traditionally on Anzac Day in the SANFL, Norwood would play Port Adelaide.

Personally...similar rivalry to Essendon* v Collingwood.

We need to find a new blockbuster not steal theirs...any ideas G.Swann?

Err No SANFL ANZAC day has always been grand finalists from previous year. It's been tradition for many years. Even positive that it was 1st round opener when season was a lot shorter than what it is now.

Personally I wouldnt like to see football on Good Friday. That's me. However for people that Good Friday has no religious meaning then sure let it happen. Play the game, sell fish burgers etc.

I hate a football game being described as "embodying the ANZAC spirit".

Flower off.

36 blokes chasing a pigskin around isn't even in the same postcode.

Exactly right. Playing footy requires courage and application however its nowhere near the level of courage and application those many ANZACs showed

I'm against the monopolisation of Anzac day by Essendon*/Coll so although I'm for games on good friday, I also oppose any other monopolisation.

I remember watching Anzac day games at AFL park. Yet you'd think bloody Ess/Coll invented it.

I think its wrong thatonly there clubs are playing on this day. As if to say the other 14 have no right/connnection to Anzac day. And I oppose the argument that they did all the work to prmote it. Like none could have drawn 80K on a day like today?

Why not make it the Grand Final replay?

Good Friday football, would they sell "Meat Pies"

Or would "Fish Sticks" be on the menu for the day?

It wouldn't draw a good crowd as many wouldn't go. We tested the waters with a good friday eve match against Essendon* an it only got 60k because most our catholic fans were at church.

I reckon Carlton and Richmond should approach the AFL and demand the Queens birthday game. It's a disgrace Collingwood get both days.

I like the idea of a game on good friday... I'm sure that the Royal Children Hospital could do a collection out the front of the game and significantly increase their revenue too (well maybe not significantly, but minimally at least).

However there is one thing that concerns me a little. I can see the umpires paying a lot of free kicks against Marc Murphy for no apparent reason and the last thing society needs is for another messiah to be crucified on that day.

Thats what i said in the other thread which sounded like this.

Good Friday is also too early in the season. At least now we could build up tho the 'Big Queens birthday clash'. DO IT!!!!!

I'm not all that fussed

Being Greek-Orthodox, our easter usually is different to most anyway so i
don't think it really effects me all that much.

ie/ in the two seasons previous to this Carlton has played Hawthorn on the Orthodox Good Friday at the telstra dome.
This wasn't an issue for me this year with both easters falling on the same day

Would be interested in hearing the thoughts of StephenM or MarkH on this.

Hear! Hear!

But then again, the competition is so ridiculously and unfairly structured with all teams not playing each other twice, that we might as well make it even unfairer still by having the same teams always playing the 'Blockbusters'.

Every fan's passion for the game is made a joke of with the competition so unfair. 15 or 30 Home and Aways (and a possible rearrangement of the finals system), or else both premierships and wooden spoons won't mean what they should.

By the way, did that many people really complain about the old Final Five Finals system? Final eight - pfft!!

I heard a suggestion that the two highest placed Victorian teams from the year before should get to play at the G on Anzac Day. Food for thought......

Why not play it on Good Friday? The whole Christian thing is a load of shit. I drove down from Sydney on Good Friday and was shocked to see every bottle shop open and Pubs and their pokies trading to normal hours. That doesnt happen in Sydney yet they play sport on the day.

ANZAC Day happens to fall on Saturday in 2009 - lets see how expediently the AFL allows other teams to play on this day then.
