At this rate, we might as well trade away the Carlton Football Club at years end also.

Why on earth would we trade Lappin? Lance maybe and Campo if we got a good deal but I don't know why we'd even consider trading Lappin.

Thing is, it's great to be a young side and all but if we traded these three players we'd be trading probably 3/4 of our most experienced players in terms of games played. You can play as many young players as you like but you need to have some experience in any side as well. Hawthorn might be playing the kids but they still have Crawford, Everitt, Joel Smith etc who are the older blokes that you need. You need a few older, wiser heads in any side you can't just go with solely kids.

I think that the term "tanking" is currently the most over-used word in football. Clubs do not "tank": they are simply not up to the mark for that particular season. Did the Dogs tank in the last 2 seasons, or did we just have a shit coach (God yes!), plenty of injuries (yes, especially 2003) and players bereft of confidence (yes).

Similarly with Richmond and Hawthorn last season, they had poor coaches, injured players, and players either not ready, not confident and not up to it getting regular game time. Put all those factors together and you will have a shit season - and yes, coming off 7 finals series in 9 seasons through the 90's and early 00's, I hated the scorn and the pity given to my club over the last 2 seasons. That scorn and pity is certainly not worth the trouble of gaining a PP.

Carlton have a look about them ATM that is of a team lacking confidence in their ability and of a team suffering with injuries to key structural players, which is testing their depth. Round 8 is far too early to read anything more into it than that, as these factors can turn around very quickly in the next month. If they do, and Carlton's season is squared away, these conversations won't be taking place (Carlton are only 2 wins away from a top 6 spot). If they don't, it won't be because Carlton aren't trying their hardest to win. If the slump continues to Round 14 or so, then the coaching staff would be derelict in their duty not to blood as many new players in the seniors as possible, ensuring that mid-age players that are not going to take the club further are not preventing the younger players from gaining valuable senior experience. Some people may argue that this "tanking": it isn't, and it's what any responsible football club would do for their future development.

C'mon Sedat! you protest too much, Griffen and Cooney were worth every second. I think the fact that you wasted the actual first rounders on Williams and Ray is clouding your judgement :)

There is a strong argument for not trading Lappin on the basis that it may gut the spirit of the playing group. This has happened before, Sheedy said it did in the 80s when he traded stalwarts away. But the point is, if you want some quality you need to give quality and Lappin has that and will not be there when Carlton is good again.

I do agree that Lance, Campo and Lappin have limited appeal but they could appeal to clubs that feel they are just a little bit of class short of a flag, these clubs would have finished high on the ladder and have late first rounders.

Believe me this very discussion goes on among all clubs supporters including mine, just the names change.
