Although it looks like we are stalking each other on various TC threads TBB, please be assured that I wholly agree with you.
I thought about that just after I posted in the Teague thread.
You're right that we at least partially agree on this, Swann and Icke should be free to make decisions without interference. We disagree on whether any decisions that have been made are really binding.
We do agree on everything as I don't believe anything is binding but imagine having joined the club recently.
In your new job, you report to the Board members.
Two Board members have made a decision/promise, verbal or otherwise - how do you break that?
Had S & I been there longer than a few days/weeks, then they should have the balls to make the call, but they hadn't.
Perhaps in a few months, when this debacle is still simmering along, they will find the cajones to do the right thing.
And here in lies the rub. Kernahan has a position on the Board AND the football department, something which many people find unacceptable. Kernahan is therefore responsible for 'employing' both Swann and Icke, and can meddle in footy department issues. That makes him incredibly powerful...in fact, way too much power for any individual, let alone someone whose performances in both areas over the years have, at best, been questionable.
Don't underestimate the power that Kernahan mayhave at Carlton, power which has been boosted, for the time being at least, since the arrival of Pratt.
It is not so much a case of saying to Swann and Icke that Mitchell has a contract which will be honoured, it's saying to Swann and Icke that 'Mitchell is staying, there is no discussion here boys'.
How do Swann and Icke feel about this? Who knows, but you'd have to think that, if this is what has happened, they'd be thinking that they have accepted positions that are, on some level, compromised.
And I shall reiterate...the common demoninator, yet again, is Kernahan.
