Here's a Whitnall theory...

They made him captain just to give Stevens something to prove and boy is Nick ripping it up on the field now...

They gave it to Lance because of his communication skills.

Let's face it, he DOES know how to use a mobile phone...

its no Secret that Lance's poor Form is directly cuased by his Family issues with his brother... they are not light issues... Lance is a family man and he has alot of values for family, so to see himself humilated in public at the hands of his own brother is not an easy thing to get over....

Pagan should have given Lance a few weeks off to sort out himself than continue to play in poor Form, otherwise no point having him on the team

Jars mentioned earlier that no Afl captain has ever been dropped and I dont doubt him but 2 more games like this from Lance and it must surely be the ants or a 'serious training mishap' moving him onto the LTI.

To watch the most derided tigers player towel up our captain is not good, in fact his presence on the field has become cringeworthy

I have to admit, 'cringe' is the way I feel too

You mean the handball receives when standing still in the centre square? That must have been his hard running, pinpoint disposal and creativity cutting us to shreds... thought is was Krakeur/Foley/Deledio/Tuck/other speedy little bastards!

How did he get to the centre square? :P

The only reasonable answer all night.

if that happened to some people it wouldnt be good.... agreed but it wouldnt make them fat and slow and unathletic....

a very reliable source tells me Lance loves the publicity with all that

When you look at Stevens last year most of us was after his head because of his poor form, look at him now.

As far as lance goes just look at the bright side he has been playing poor games at the moment and we are still winning games, just lookout then when he hit form and I will be surprised if he won’t find some good form soon, I know he needs too badly.

Synbad, Football is much more than speed. You are so one dimensional. Yes speed is important, but skill and smarts are also key factors. And putting your body on the line and getting to the contest are number 1 in footy. We aren't playing a non-contact sport. Look at Murphy - he is far from the fastest bloke going around, but he reads the play so well - which makes up for speed issues. And he is willing to put his body in the hard spots.

You also say crash and bash footy is out! I think if you look at the premiers and best performing teams of the last 10 years, you'll notice one key factor... and its not that they are the fastest teams - It's that they are the toughest teams. Putting your body on the line is more important the sprinting around the outside of a pack.

As for Lance, he looks ordinary at the moment. But don't write him off because of speed. That's irrelevant. If you can play footy, you can play footy... speed is just one component. Lance looks to have lost his touch and intensity for the game right now. Those factors are much more important than his speed. Let's give him a couple more weeks before we write his entire career off.

btw, some are forgetting he was an all-Australian as a forward when he was a kid. If he gets his head right and fitness up, he is very capable of being a factor in our team.

I don't think it's any surprise that Lance's poor form has coincided with his well-documented off-field personal issues. It is hard to think that these problems would not be weighing heavily on his mind and hence affecting his mindset which then affects his performances on the field. I understand the theory that once you cross that white line you are deemed ready to play etc etc but I do think that there are mitigating circumstances here re Lance and it would take a harsh man to simply dismiss Lance's off-field issues when evaluating his form. I just can't accept that the game has changed so dramatically in one off-season so as to render the 2006 Best and Fairest winner useless a mere six months later. There has to be something more to it and I believe Lance's personal problems are taking a huge toll on him and his form.

Disappointing to read this thread. Lance worked his behind off last year and could really hold his head high knowing that he gave his best. And we have supporters caning him in round 1 of the following season.

Everyone has form slumps and Lance will bounce back hard.

Yeah, wouldnt it be great if we all hated him?

We should start booing him when he goes onto the ground just to let him know.

And God forbid he gets a kick near the boundary we could throw stuff at him....maybe we could wind up one of the younger guys in the team to start a fight with him at training?

Wow!

oh and he's fat and slow, oh and he's got red hair! Ha ha hope he winds up playing his career out in the Bullants reserves.......

We hate Lance isnt it great, hope he plays shit agin next week so we can really give him a kicking when he's down..

You are so right Synbad, you are the best Carlton supportrer here....

Lance is too slow, cant get a kick and .................................................

I think that Lance will come back and play some good footy for the Blues, but he is struggling at the moment and needs some time with the Bullants to find some form. He was a passenger in the pre-season and that has followed on to the main season. I don't think that Carlton is a strong enough side at the moment to carry anyone, we need all players firing.

I don't think that we should throw the baby out with the bath water, Lance will come back and he will come back stronger from this, but we can not afford the luxury of playing him in the ones.

It sounded like many Carlton players had dirty nights tonight at least during some point of the game, the thing is most of them had something in reserve and could work their way back into it.

If I was Lance, I would put my ego aside and resign the captancy post to work out my personal issues and try to do what is best for the team. I would then focus on doing the little things well and try to work my way back into some form.

I know that many may think that this would destabilize the club, but I think that it would show that we are a mature club all working towards the same goals.

Lance has been a champion for the Carlton football club, but he is not at the moment and we can only live life in the present.

I want to see Lance succeed, but he should do the thing that is best for the club.

It's not just some of us noticing his poor form...

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/ ... 88,00.html

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rfmatc ... 79661.html

Quote:
OF THE many critical decisions made at this revamped Carlton over summer, one of the most vexed was the captaincy.

The club's most potent player, Brendan Fevola, could not be considered because he's, well, Fevola, and the raw leadership material, Marc Murphy, is still in his teens.

Thus, it became a contest between Nick Stevens, a professional midfielder who ended up at the club almost by accident, and Lance Whitnall, a key-position player born in the Navy Blue.

It's an early call, but after an eventful and highly successful pre-season and first game, Carlton might be second-guessing its decision to award the home boy the captaincy ahead of the import. And despite unseemly restraining orders between bickering Whitnalls, it's on-field where the difference between candidates appears most stark.

So much for his great leadership
Quote:
Standing just 10m away, Whitnall couldn't conjure the necessary enthusiasm to join the celebrations in a moment that had his teammates high-fiving and half the 60,000 fans dancing and cheering in the aisles.

And that, for a captain, is unusual to say the least.

He is certainly struggling at the moment and reminds me of how Kouta was when his dad was sick - he just looks uninterested. I'm with CK lets at least give him a chance to sort out his personal issues and then see if that makes a difference. I'm not convinced his slump is football related at all.
