We are a rabble.

Returned from the Dome, and can only say that NO ONE IS SAFE! NO ONE!

I think, like in scrabble, we should return the hand to the bag, and take another 22 tiles. IT COULDN'T BE ANY WORSE.

Mate ,if we can get anything for Campo or Whitnal, get it now.

Probably not one redeeming feature, our team is rooted, Fevola fails to kick goals when it counts, (I don't care that he kicked 5 goals, its the five behinds that hurt - and if he'd kicked 10 we still would have been thrashed) ......and our supporters persist in seeing only the good. Yay stevo, nice kick! Get real. We are a RABBLE.

I reckon we would lose to a VFL side.

I despair.

The horror, the horror........

Like the time I told Demetrispew, that he wasn't fit to swill milk to pigs, of course he took umbrage at that so I said "OK you ARE fit to swill milk to pigs. He still didn't like that though.

Vet, you are right! Swill is a great desciptive word.

I have gone beyond anger and frustration. Once you give in to the system and realise that positives do eventuate out of negatives, then you will have footballing peace in your life.

Yes, we are a rabble, but look at the draft riches you will get at seasons end!!! Thanks AFL, you're the best. PP's and high draft picks. I can't wait!!! :P

Don't you just love this homogenised competition???

What you are seeing now is the inevitability of what took place in 2002 when we were raped. It has delayed the rebuilding until this year. Would have like for it to start last year.

I was calling for the tank after the aints game but Fev decided to be Superman against the crows and fired us up for the rest of the year (in patches). Then the worst thing that could of happened to the club did and we finished 10th, or otherwise know as no man's land. Footballing's version of Siberia.

Vet, we have so many players who cant cut it that it is reaching comical proportions. We are a rabble. Don't blame Fev more then others. If anything Fev would probably scrap a pass mark for last night. The rest would have to stay down and repeat the year!!!

Should have been rubbed out for a year... would have saved us money with his contract and we would have assured ourselves of two gun kids and 3 in the top 20 plus a gun in the psd...
Bloody Fevola!!!!!

Now we will be forced to sign him for $350k same as Lance and less than Campos new contract......

I think it goes back further than that marci. It is swapping our first two picks in 01 for McK and missing MaGuirre etc because of that. It's having 3 first rounders in 00 and getting battlers insetad of at least one class player. And so on and so on. Be great to have Wells but Goddard hasn't set the world alight. I think we're paying the price for our shocking recruiting in the late 90s. Where are our 25 yr old 100+game first and second tier players. I don't think we'll need to tank games to get draft picks. I think our current team could try their hearts out and we'll still barely win a game for the rest of the year. I guess also that the coaching staff need to improve the side from year to year. But currently we're no better than in 2002.

We imposed our own penalties in 2001! We didnt have a pick until the 3rd round

And it was the best draft EVER.

Finish low low.;.. get a player to walk in the psd..
pick up 2 gun kids..
another late pick like betts..
Than a trade for a hard inside player..
get rid of a couple of blood suckers ...................and it can all change for the better pretty quickly..

exactly gerry, we've been in this situation for some time, and some games last year + the wizzer have seen us start to believe in fairy tales again, but they don't really come true (not continually anyway). its going to be a long hard slog to make up for years of mismanagement. synbad believes that it can be quick if we get the early picks, lets hope so. but you have to remember this is our fourth year out of the 8 in a row, and if last night is any judgement we're still 10 goals short of a top 4 side.

Lets put it in perspective.

When the draft was first introduced, every AFL club made blunders, we certainly were no exception.

After years clubs accustomizing to the draft and all its perks, clubs eventually got better drafting players and utilising the draft with some sort of precision.

Determining talent in the under 18 competition became easier over several years, not when the draft was initially introduced. With beeps and buzzers, camps and all sorts of stuff.

Compare our draft history, with all other AFL clubs and you will find only Brisbane has done better.

Then you look at the Saints, Bulldogs, Hawks, Cats, Tigers etc with half the starting line up being round 1 picks.

Sure, the potential is there for the Saints to win something big, but it isn't guaranteed.

AFL clubs started to utilise the draft efficiently only recently.

Carlton's philosophy at the time, playing finals football continuously, year after year you miss out on the best available talent. When we were playing finals football clubs were still accustomizing to the draft system. Therefore, seeing the draft was unreliable in its initial years, we recycled known talent instead. The results weren't all that bad. We were a whisker away from playing Essendon* in the Grand Final in 2001, we were the only club that stood toe to toe against Essendon* in 2000, we played off for the flag in 1999.

I don't know about that KL. What are you basing that on? I would have thought almost everyone has drafted better from the U/18s and I'd guess we have been burnt on half our trades.
The success we had in the 90s was based mainly ariound U19s (Kouta, Ang Allan ratts Brown etc) predraft interstaters (Sticks, Braddles etc) F&S - SOS, Red when he was good. We made some okay trades but have more than cancelled that out with Devo, O'reilly etc. Even Diesel was a zone player we should never have let go. Who's drafted worse than us over the last 10 years?

Yes we seriously lacked in succession planning, but yet again, to replace ageing stars in terms of talent, you need to have the luxury of having access to the best talent in Australia.

This is impossible when the club was playing finals football continuously and the draft in its intial years was unreliable.

McClure on 3LO said before the Hawks game that our resulkts against richmond and Geelong were to be expected because of the rejects we have. His theory runs that the reject plays very well for a year, because they are on death row, last chance, etc, but that when they survive the cut, they revert to type.

He says that we are a long way off, bottom eight, possibly bottom four.

Said we overachieved last year, and losing the draft picks means we have no young kinds - raised Goddard and Wells again (god I'm getting sick of that!).

The winter just got longer.....
