He did coach at AFL level for sometime.

I said it toungue in cheek though, 'Cherry Ripe' was a term he used often to describe a player who was ready to take the next step up.

This is probably a very shallow post but I remember reading in the Age recently that Fremantle had signed 4 players on 4 year contracts including:

Justin Longmuir couple of years ago
Aaron Sandilands (or were about to at the time)
Chris Tarrant :garthp:
And one other whose name escapes me at the moment.

I am just concerned whether we need to head down that path again, does this guy seem to favour long-term contracts? :? I believe a couple of those at Freo will come back to bite them with Tarrant the obvious one and Longmuir already having done so (yeah he is alright but not worth 4 years!)

As I said, very un-informed post as I don't have any information about him but just something I read earlier and stuck my mind.

Any contract signed for longer than 2 years needs to be approved by the board so it shouldn't be an issue for us.

Didn't we once sign Mansfield & McKernan to 4 year contracts.

Yep - ouch.

I think though theres a big difference to signing up 28 year old tradees for 4 years versus signing up your top 10 picks for 4 years.

Also I guess Carlton has been talking about not disclosing the terms of their player contracts anymore. There was talk about both Murphy and Gibbs being offered long-term contracts at sign-on but I can't recall it being published in the press.

Exactly Molsey, I would have no hesitation in signing Murphy, Kennedy, Gibbs, Walker on long contracts.

I think the members should be entitled to know the contract status of their players. They can't implore us to be part of the club and then leave us void of information. I think the more you know about everything, the more you feel part of the club.

If we did they were part of the reason why they'd now have to be approved by the board.

Caro's latest:
http://www.theage.com.au/realfooty/news ... 97962.html
Quote:
That trio, along with several others approached, all voiced concerns about the seemingly unworkable relationship between Pagan and Northern Bullants coach Mitchell, who applied unsuccessfully for the senior coaching position last September and barely has spoken to Pagan since.

Banished to the other side of Princes Park, Mitchell is continuing to develop the Blues' younger players in an operation virtually everyone in football regards as untenable. Carlton's refusal to rectify the situation has given the impression that it does not regard Pagan as anything but a short-term prospect, a fact not lost during this current interviewing process.

Candidates were also given the impression that Pagan was no certainty to survive beyond the 2007 season, although his contract runs until the end of 2008. The contenders were told that part of the position could be to nurture and mentor a younger senior coach as well as keep the club's promising young list together.

Caro you did say Pagan would not be coaching Round 1 2007. Back tracking a bit?

 That absolute bimbo and idiot Caroline Wilson is at again in today's Age trying bag Carlton once more. As if she knows anything seeing as no-one at Carlton will talk to her.

Her article suggests that candidates for Football Manager don't want the job because of the Mitchell/Pagan situation and that Pagan will get the boot at the end of the year.

What happens if Carlton gets moving and wins 7-9 games and finishes 9 -12, will Pagan have failed, I don't think so!

Wilson cannot help herself, her day is not made unless she can take a pot shot at Carlton. How often does she tip a bucket on that rabble at Punt Road (how long is it since they made a GF or won a flag) never.

As I have said before, she writes nothing but absolute tripe about Carlton and the only really good use for her articles is on the hook in the little house out the back.

This is a first time post

I have a bit to do with footy media people, players and officials, so perhaps I can throw some light on Carlton issues from time to time.

Re Carlton Football Operations role, Stephen Icke is highly respected for the way he has kept the Dockers playing group together over the last few years while also fitting Tarrant and Solomon under the cap. He is keen to return to Melbourne.

Other candidates, some of high quality have balked at the job, for a few reasons. The perception that there are still some organisational changes to come at Carlton, maybe CEO and / or coach. Also, there is a view that Pagan is not the easist of coaches to work with. The Barry Mitchell thing is also seen as a problem. If you want to keep a happy playing group and therefore have the best possible environment for negotiating new contracts, you dont need the senior coach and the VFL coach at odds.

The second paragraph is absolutely spot-on mate!! Good on ya, champion!! I believe that if Steven gets the nod he needs to address list management issues, the nonescence of the Mitchell-Pagan saga, contracts and maybe the CEO. Personally, I think Malouf is no good but I don't know what work he does behind the scenes - but from what I've heard heis an absolute dil.

Thanks for the info on Steven in the first paragraph though. I knew that he was very professional, experienced and well regarded - thats about it. Sounds perfect for our situation. Fingers-crossed hey?! GO BLUES!!!
