To be fair of Marc, he needs at least a season, perhaps two seasons before he will be fully ready to become captain of Carlton.

Ahh .. so no parallels then

I still say stay with Lance until he retires / resigns á la Kouta, and then have another look at it .. someone else may step up (4BG for example) to fill the shoes.

That's fair enough, too - this is only his second season, and he's not even 20 yet. You can't put the responsibility of club captain on such young shoulders .. let him develop more (and ohh, what development) so he can be a great player as well as a memorable captain

So did they recruit him as Captain or recruit him and then make him captain after a year or two?

p(12)terg......have a look at this entry in my Scrapbook that's being rested until season's end.....scroll down the page there to see the Kernahan entry...... http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... c&start=60

Josh, with the greatest of respect, because you have previously posted stuff with some accuracy - your info on the captaincy is way off the mark.

Stop being reactive.

Don't change a thing; don't change the team, the captain, or the tactics.

We've got a winning formula.

Lance hasn't had to do much because they midfield have been by-passing him by circumstance of the play and not intentionally.

The big forwards have kept things pretty open as well as providing choice in avenue moving forward; whether that's Lance, Kennedy or the Fish. Even when Waite was forward in the 4th...same thing...Kangas were tower focussed and our little guys carved through them towads FEVOLA.

This week we were even more unpredictable in that we didn't have our ruckmen floating down forward.

Don't change a winning formula, and give the guys not in the winning squad a reason to step up and pressure for a spot by their performance in the 2nds; maybe Kennedy as the exception.

I like it just the way it is. :-D

I can't answer that question in a manner which ceases you from entering into a tirade, can I? :(

I cant help myself.
I hate seeing a guy playing in the most elite sporting competition in Australia who cant raise a gallop.
Especially when he is representing Carlton...

Lets face it.. if Lance played for any other club wed be laughing at him .. same as every supporter from every other club laughs at him now.

Its a cut throat industry ... We want our club to be the best.... simple as that!...

Maybe darts is more his go... but fair dinkum whether im harsh or not... it doesnt matter.. cos its up to Lance to get himself supremely fit to play the game... if he cant no matter what the reason is... its not up to us to make excuses up for him...

all we want is a premiership.. and allow the players that work hard to be rewarded...

If you gave 2 cents for every time you've expressed your opinion on this topic you'd be up for about $10,000!

Synbad... are you sure you're not Lance's brother???

You're living in a fantasy world. You act as if Lance is a cripple that can't run at all. Yes he isn't fast, but he knows how to play the game better than 90% of the players running around in the AFL, which more than compensates for his lack of pace. You need to open your mind mate and take a more holistic look at the world. You are focussed too much on one attribute.

What's your evidence that other supporters laugh at him (or us)?
What's your evidence that he is not trying to get himself fit or that he is overweight?
You love to throw out generalisations and judgements and subjective opinions as if they are facts.

It is starting to look like a bad decision to have him as captain. He is either not offering an opinion, not being asked for an opinion (worse), or hiding (being hidden by the club) from the media due to his other personal issues.

I hope it is him being hidden from the media, as the other scenarios are not ideal.

I also think his games are being effected by the latter which is disappointing for the club - thankfully we are winning, else there would be more bad press I think.

I know it's early, but I dont think there's anything which we can do (i.e. changing captain) without inviting more negativity/criticism of the club for at least the season.

The fact his public speaking skills are so second rate doesn't help either. At least Nick Stevens can string two sentences together.

Previously would have gone with Whitnall in a flash, but as soon as their second real intra practice match and the Essendon* game, I would think even the men behind Carlton would be unsure whether they made the right decision.

Let's say Whitnall has a bad year (please don't let this be true) to the point he forces the hand of Denis and is dropped a few times. What then? Do you keep a player on decline as captain or do you bite the bullet and give it either to Stevens or Murphy? Just imagine if we had give the captaincy to Teague (at the time he was a popular choice and probably third behind Kouta and Stevens/Whitnall)?

Anyway this is all heresay and I doubt Whitnall will be this bad come the meaningful games. He will have a good two years at the helm, maybe lead us to the Finals next year and everybody will be happy.

Warbs, that's unlike you. Kernahan moved to Carlton after the 1985 season, along with the fabled Bradley and Motley. They played at Carlton in 1986 under Mark Maclure. Remember, Motts was one of our shining lights in the 86 GF loss to the Hawks. Sticks was made captain in his second year at Carlton, 1987.

i think warbs meant first year as captain...not player.
