Clever use of the midfield is always where a game is at, but having a suitable matchup for Franklin is important so that he doesn't destroy us when the ball is kicked his way.

In the ebb and flow of the game, if we fall behind in the midfield stakes, the competent defender will take on a bit of the load for us. Then when we wrestle control back, the defender gets a bit of an easier run.

All well and good to say choke the midfield and you'll win the game, but it's a tough thing to do in practise. :)

I would go Waite or Walker on Franklin. Thornton is not athletic enough and if played on Buddy will concede 4 to 5 goals. That will probably lose us the game. We need to keep him to 1 or 2 goals. I would even go Setanta before Thornton.

Franklin tore us apart in one game last year. Kicked 4 in a quarter or something. We need to watch him closely, but cutting off supply and closing down the loose men running the ball towards their forward line is the big priority.

Why are so many posters focussing on negating Franklin. No doubt he is a quality player but if we stop the easy supply to him, he won't be in a position to trouble the scoreboard. How we manage Hodge will be the most telling factor. He is their quarterback. We have plenty of athletic types who could nullify Buddy in our defence and let's not forget what Walker did to Croad last year. So who do we match up on Hodge to stop his damaging disposal.? Not only is he a great long penetrating kick (best in the business out of defence ahead of Gilbee and Goddard) he also possesses great vision in spotting unmarked midfielders. We need to stop his supply from their defensive zone. Hawthorn defenders always look for him at every opportunity. Would like to see Rusell be given the chance to run with him and stop him from getting his customary easy possession. Has the pace and is not bad in the air otherwise it may have to be Walker or een Gibbs. Gibbs could end up hurting Hodge should he play loose because unlike the others he certainly knows show to kick a goal or two. Stop Hodge and we proceed to the third round as simple as that. I rate our midfield slightly ahead of Hawthorns, so I can't see too much pressure being exerted on our backline. I rate Essendon*'s tall man department a lot stronger than Hawthorns and we successfully cut them out of the game. Our reliance on Fev is still a major problem for us but overall I believe we match up well against Hawthor just like Essendon*.

Carrots would be my 1st pick tp play on Hodge. It would be a good lesson for JR or Gibbs early on too.

We need to focus on Franklin the way other teams have to focus on Fev. Best person to do the job on the best forward, regardless of the midfield. If we can restrict supply, we restrict opportunities bit we are never going to cut it off completely. There are some players going around who can win a game in one quarter, be it the first or last. Franklin is one of them. Personally, I think he is so attacking, he needs to be kept accountable as well, outside the fifty. Therefore we need someone who can run with him when we are not in possession and also someone who can run OFF him when we are. Waite looks to have the athleticism to do it for mine. Walker, too but I hate the thought of using Walker in a defensive role. I would prefer him to be more attacking. I agree with Carazzo for Hodge. His body is a bit more up to a tagging role. I am also a big Wiggo fan and think he could do a defensive midfielder's job but it doesn't look like he will get a run, more's the pity.
Hawthorn have the list we have but a with couple of years more experience. I think we will struggle to go four quarters with them just yet but I am hanging out for the contest. Another all-nighter for us in this timezone.

This is how I'd start the matchups:

Franklin - SOV
Roughhead - Carlos
Williams - 1AW
Hodge - Carrots

The good thing about us now is that we have the flexability to change the matchups around if one of them isn't working out. :-D

I wouldn't be too concerned about Franklin. Melbourne had some numptie on him who didn't get within twenty yards of him during the 4 goal burst.

Sit Waite or Setanta on him and tell 'em to not give him an inch. Once physical contact becomes involved "footsteps" Franklin will go on the missing list.

Franklin plays as a big flanker...doesnt take many overhead marks, I would play Andrew Walker on him....AW has the athletic ability to run with him and now has some extra bulk thanks to a good preseason.
AW also concentrates well...Buddy only needs 10 minutes of loose checking and he can turn a game....
I would play Thornton on Williams......and maybe Waite or Setanta on Roughhead who is a more traditional mark and kick player...

Put Waite on Franklin- lets keep testing the new CHB superstar

Run Simpson with Hodge- I reckon Simmo will give him a run

Leave Stevens, Murphy and Gibbs for them to worry about...sounds like a handful doesnt it! :-D

Let Whitnall and JFK roam HF...Betts crumbing and Hot Lips Houlihan to feed off HF line.

And Fev 8)

I cant wait....

Must give Anderson, Austin and Grigg a run.

Nothing to loose...much to gain 8)

Good point. We should be giving another 3-4 kids a taste this week when not much is on the line.

Hawthorn and Melbourne were level pegging, and he kicked 4 goals in about 10 minutes.

Of course he is not the only influence, but he certainly did enough to stand up and take note.

Obviously if we focus on him their midfield can still win the game for them, of course Williams can still get 6.

However it is an important match up given his ability and influence in yesterdays game.

You watch anderson when he gets a run.

White line fever at its best.

Saw him clean up Heath Culpitt in the NTFL GF.

He was BOG by a mile.

Plays like Fraser Brown...looks like Brown....the mongrel we have yearned for.

My favourite pick in the draft, Gibbs is a Ferarri....Anderson is a Mack truck.

As a resident of Darwin and regular attendee of NTFL games I have often seen Joe Anderson play including the Grand Final where Daryl White won the Medal for BOG. To say Joe has "White Line Fever" is TOTAL NONSENSE. He also is not a Mack Truck and is not a similar player to Fraser Brown.

Joe in his time with the Darwin Buffalo's was a close checking defender who was very calm under pressure and never displayed any "White Line Fever" in my opinion. Joe is a hard working footabller who never gives in.

These claims of yours will give people on this forum a false impression of Joe Anderson.

When blueblood is referring to white line fever, i assume he is referring to joey's hardness at the ball, and willingness to put his body on the line. From what I have seen, joey in the intra clubs, he is very hard at it, and hopefully will become the back pocket we dont have at the moment.

In respect of fraser brown, he was never that dirty - he was just really hard at it and fearless. from what i have seen, joey is like that.
