We were forced to listen to the 3AW radio coverage, 'cause in Queensland we only get a replay at 11 pm.

Very pleased to hear Grybas, David King & Co compliment both sides on the second half, saying how good it was to see real football again.

We'll be better next start - more settled and more confident in ourselves and each other.

Bring....it....... on! :-D :-D :-D :-D

Still that was Carlton's best team out there, we at least still have the Johnsons, McPhee, Dyson, Gumbleton, Jetta, Hislop, Lonergan, Nash and even Campo to come back. Lloydy needed the run.

Looks good when he has a straight line to run in and doesn't have to think too much.

Murphy....God love him :-D

Was surprised seeing Gibbs playing off half back, but there was a passage of play where the ball was bouncing in front of him, opponant on his hammer, he stopped, opponant crashed behind him and his momentum stopped, Gibbs took off again with a second of space and we were set running forward....batman has his sidekick and our midfield in 2-3 years time is the best in the AFL.

2 x Wooden Spoons = 2 x Gold.

It kills me to win wooden spoons, but we seriously got the free set of steak knives with ours.

Taking away my sheer hatred for Essendon* and my blind spot (well, er, blind continent actually), it was a great footy match to watch. Some really exciting young players out there. The fleet feet of the Bombers young guns was impressive whilst running the ball from defence to attack with blistering speed, versus the slick hands and 100% pressure at the contest from our boys.

That said, it was nearly completely ruined by the umpires. I thought most of Fev's free kicks were there, except for perhaps one, but I reckon with this new push in the back rule finally Fev will be getting some of the free kicks he has deserved over the years - especially the ones where the full backs give him a little shove when he is in the air marking on the lead.

The last quarter and some of the holding the ball decisions that went against us were preposterous.

Oh and Matthew Lloyd is a sniping, snivelling, filthy bitch. Nice and gutsy with the double-fist to T-Birds head after kicking a goal. Oh, anmd his shirt front on Kouta in the third quarter - isn't it an offence now to do a bump from front on?

Well done to our boys. Showed some good skills, stuck to the game plan pretty well and showed level heads at the end. We probably let the bummers back into it by not taking our chances properly in fornt of goal in the second and third quarters.

Yeah, I noticed that Korn. Like tank tops, more than sleevless jumpers. High and tight around the neck, and very tight around the arms.

Don't like it myself.

The halcyon days for me were Doull, Southby and Swan McKay. But I'm looking forward to the next 10 years with Waite, Carlos and Thornton...

Grybas is the best caller in the game by the length of the street. Puts McAvaney in the shade as Grybas actually watches the game, while Bruce is too busy hassling the statistician for some obscure crap that no-one but he gives a shit about.

Interesting game.

First of all, the standard of the game exceeded my expectations. Both teams came to play unlike Collingwood the previous night. Our disposal in the first half was first rate. We really minimised the costly turnovers and kicking to contests unnecessarily. The difference between the two teams was basically attributable to our greater intensity in the first half. We ran with numbers out of defence, we hunted in packs forcing costly turnovers and we thrashed them in the middle in the clearances. This made life for our defence comfortable. Our players had plenty of self belief, willing to take on our direct opponents. We had plenty of the ball and used it well in the first half moving it quickly to advantage before the Bombers could retreat into a defensive flood as was the case later on in the second half. Even our match ups looked right.

Carlos and Waite have added a new dimension to our defence. Two great athletic types who can play on talls and quicks. Waite was a revelation. Must admit was not keen at all having him play down back. Too undisciplined imo giving away cheap free kicks. Did not take too long for him to confirm my fears, putting on an unnecessary poor tackle in front of goal. Thereafter, he beat Lucas easily in the one on one contests quite easily. The best quality I saw in Waite's game as a defender was his anticipation, often leading his opponent to the ball and running out in front. Waite's inclusion in the defensive half also had the benefit of freeing Thornton to play his natural game on an inferior opponent in Johns who is not the smartest cookie on the field. Thornton gave us the defensive drive we missed when he had to play the role of stopper on tougher opponents. What is most satisfying is the fact Lance is no longer required down back and Bower must be brought in as he is way too good a player to continue playing in the VFL. That is a mighty strong backline for the future and can easily be boosted with the likes of Fisher when he drops back. Hopefully Hartlett can come good and play on the gorillas. Walker nullified Hird which is what we have come to expect. One of the best one on one contestors in the AFL. Was still disappointed in his decision making and disposal when he had the ball. Still a long way off before he can play as a midfielder.

Fisher started up as a forward dropping back when Pagan finally realised he is a shocking kick for goal. Played well down back/wing area. Short kicking game was quite good. Houla did well, although he did look flashy picked up a lot of cheap kicks and those defensive errors nearly cost us the game. Prefer him at the other end where he can kick a few and hit Fevola on the chest

The first half (match winning lead) was set for us predominantly by Murphy and Fevola. Murphy's evasive skills are just phenominal. How he gets himself out of tight situations is beyond me. Carazzo was in everything. Has the knack of knowing where to position himself and run into space to create good options.. Not my favouraite player but like facial hait has grown on me. I was critical last year because he took way too long to dispose of the ball and he kicked to contests unecessarily. Well I am glad to say he has improved on both fronts.Has a good game and derserves his spot. The two areas for development for him are his kicking for goal. He rushes it and does not give himself a proper run up. Also gets pinned too easily when he gets tackled. Murphy needs to show him how to brush them off. Stevens had a great game and gave it his all but then again I thought Monfries his direct opponent was BOG.

Our ruck stocks in Ackland and Cloke did well although the former was quiet. Cloke is clearly superior to Bryan and cannot understand Collingwood's assessment of both players. Still connot forget Bryan's mistimed jumps out in the centre which where embarrassing to watch. Shame Sam Jacobs was injures and could not get a game.

Was disappointed with our second half. We become complacent when we are way in front thinking we can hold on to the lead without having to contineue kicking goals. Our goals dried up allowing Essendon* to catch up. We also have to win hard. We should never have let them back into the game. Not sure whether it was due to lack of fitness or confidence but we stopped running and contesting in the second half with Essendon* winning the midfield battle and bringing themselves in with a good chance of winning the game after it appeared lost. We have a habit of doing this when in similar positions.

Not too sure how Blackwell was left out and Ross Young made our final list. Not too sure he can make the transition. At the end of the game when the pressure was on and we had to play keepings off, he just kicked it out of bounds.

Cannot understand how we continually got caught for incorrect disposal. When a couple of our players got pinned, Carazzo being one of them, rather than hold on to the ball and force a ball up, the players would try to lay a kick to it or lay it in front of them. The players should watch Bentick hold on tightly to the ball as he gets gang tackled. The ball never spills.

Was also disappointed in a couple of the tackles we laid. Really could have hurt them but unfortunately allowed them to free their hands and dispose of the ball by hand to their team mate.

Overall a good win in an entertaining game

I thought the intensity of the game was first rate.

The biggest bonus is Carlos and Waite down the defensive spine which frees Thornton up to play creative aroung half back. I was suprised Bower didnt play but he and Hartlett will get time down back as well.

The midfield rotations were excellent. Both Russell and Carrazzo were pleasing and give us a bit extra. Dont forget we still have Bentick and Blackwell to come back too.

Good to win . The new rule about in the back has to go. Rules committee must be on drugs to dream this one up.

And its always great to beat those Dons. Sheedy was banking on a good showing this pre season and it hasnt come off.

It's a disgraceful rule change, but I was very happy to see our boys adjust to it much better than the scum.

Fletcher is one of the dirtiest players getting around. Happily cleans up little blokes like Simpson and Murphy, while avaiding any serious contact with anyone even vaguely close to his own size. I'd pay good money to see him get knocked out cold.

I really noticed how much better our clearance work was and our ability to put the pressure on in close, we had good awareness in there and really wanted that pill. There wasn't as much blind desperation with players sliding in and jumping on top of the pack, we kept our feet and had clean hands. It was a much more mature performance.

Ryder helped us win with two great handpasses to us, Ditto Michael who must be hard at learning and couldn't help putting his hands on Fev's back, I personally hate the new rule but Setanta and Waite who aren't even full-bred backmen adjusted far better than the ever experienced Michael and Fletcher.

Good to see Fullmont get his mug on there in the last quarter... :-D

I used to like Grybas, but his work in front of the camera on Foxtel, which is generally pretty sub standard, has made me more critical of his work behind the microphone. I'd rather him than any of the other buffoons on commercial radio, but to be honest I'd still have him behind the likes of Whateley and Hudson, which I realise will probably make me Robinson Crusoe in that regard.
