Poor effort there PJ IMO - we all know it's only a 2-3 year appointment - either Murphy or Gibbs will be our next long-term captain. Whitnall has shown as much dedication to the cause as any over the last 2 years so I find your observations ".......joke, farce and disgrace come to mind...." lack class & show disrespect to the process insituted re: this appointment. Your thoughts suggest there was an obvious alternate appointment - this being the case, please tell me who was the obvious ssuccessor to Kouta's reign??????

The Correct call for sure. He has served the club for quite some time taking hits like a body bad.

He could of been better in some areas no doubt, but there was no other real option apart from Stevens, and Lance has done much more for the CFC.

Lets hope it inspires him to smash the bombers! (In the forward line Deniiiiiiiiiiis)

Lets face it, Lance has been captaining the club throughout 2006; he's the obvious leader for the time being.

He is the right choice.

Stevens would have been good too, but it would have been more difficult to replace Stevens than it wiould Whitnall when Murphs time arrives.

IMO Stevens will be around longer than Whitnall.

I'm glad he's got it.

He's a true blue boy.

Born and bred Carltonian. A Father Son draftee. Pedigree.

May the Whitnall dynasty continue with Lance's boys too.

Strut your stuff Lance!

Lets have a Big Navy Blue 2007.

Way to back the new captain of the Blues mate...

Two things to keep in mind - one, we don't exactly have a plethora of players who are capable *or old enough* to step up to captain at this stage... and two, if the players/coaching staff agreed on this and it was ratified by the board - then I'm willing to run with it...

Now - if you can rationalize why appointing Big Red is a 'disgrace', I'd love to hear it...

As far as I'm concerned, good on him - IMO consistency aside I reckon he's a decent leader on the field.

I thought it was obvious why, Sparks.

When was the last time Lance fronted up to pre season in good condition and maintained that throughout the whole pre season?
He's paid 300K+ as a professional athlete and is meant to keep himself in condition that befits a professional athlete.
I haven't seen him in reasonable nick for ages and yet we choose to reward him with one of the highest honours at the club?

While I agree Nick Stevens didn't have the best of seasons last year, but who did? Stevens should have been given the captaincy because at least he knows how to train and maintain himself as a professional athlete. Yes, he came back in shit house form last year, but thats 1 out of about 7 pre seasons that Lance has come back in shit house condition.

I'll accept the fact that he is now the captain of the club, but it doesn't mean I have to agree with it or like it one bit.

Ahh, fair call there mate - just wanted to see you back up your first comments with a reason behind them is all... I do agree to an extent, I personally would have preferred Stevens as captain - I think he gets a bad rap considering since he started at Carlton he's received the number 1 tagger in the midfield, week in week out - something that is hopefully going to change... 8)

I also agree that Whitnall hasn't quite presented himself as the model AFL captain, not now - or since he's started... And I also agree that he hasn't always applied himself in the off-season and presented at the start of the season in the sort of shape you would expect an AFL footballer... but he IS a terrific leader, the boys look up to him and he presents himself on the footy field the same way he has since I played against him when he played for Lalor Stars *Alphington JFC - kick their asses all the time  *...

So like you PJ I don't 100% agree, but I'm willing to back him in - and in his case, hope that it will drive him to excel during the seasons *AND the off season*

I Personally agree dude, i had a bad week, then hear this news, they give it to some guy who i really think will struggle to make the 22 in the next 2 years especially if everyone thinks our new recruits from last year and the previous years are any good. If he still makes the 22 in the next year or 2,they must be duds we recruited, but if his Captain i hope he does well even thou i don't agree on it.

With all due respect, I don't think he would have been chosen had anybody have predicted Whitnall would be pushing it to make the 22 for the next two years... why choose him as captain if you're not sure he'll make the squad?!

Love to know who the horse is...

I also hears people (important people) have been pushing for Stevens to captain...

Have you heard Whitnall speak?

"Yeah, na, yeah, na..."

Embarrassing to be the face of the club, and is not captaincy material - not just on this aspect but on a number of levels that others have pointed out.

Bondiblue,

If he is such a true blue why was he trying to ship his way to st.kilda a few seaons ago??
A poor decision has been made in appointing him as captain.

If we have learned anything over the last year it is that disunity is death. Whatever your opinion is on the merits of this the captain needs to be supported.

Rhys our club's greatest captain wasn't the most articulate either.

Interesting that he got the gig given his allegedly bad relationship with DP, who I would imagine had a big say in whether he got the job.

When Sticks was captain BB, media interviews were not a major deal as they are now. Today it is the difference between growing your membership and sponsorship base.

Whilst I believe that an on field [Red] and off field [Stevo] Captains should have been appointed, I'll support the clubs decision.

Maybe Sandra Sully can give Red some pointers on speaking and presenting to the media.

I hope that Red gets a watch with the new job!

Would the real slim shady please stand up.... i repeat could the real slim shady please stand up

Had to be captain, easily our most consistent player. He will be a perfect captain and lead the young boys. The only thing i want is him to be more aggressive.

Well done Slim
