actually I think we'll have the midfield right when Stevenx is allowed to run into the open spaces and receive the ball rather than trying to do all the work and run to the spaces and not get rested.

Fair comment.......

I'm all for Murphy being the long term captain and cutting out the middle man in either Stevens or Whitnall...only thing is I think Murphy needs one more year of learning the ropes as an AFL player and getting the rest of his teammates respect as far as being captain material....which he will do as he is such a quality young man and player.
For this year I would stick with Kouta and promote Murphy to the leadership group......Brett Ratten can appoint Murphy as captain when he takes over for next season....

Yes he plays for the jumper now, but he still lacks that Navy Blue passion.

Just my opinion though :)

I was quick to bag stevens last year. He played like a joke. However i have since been told he had some pretty awkward injuries. One being he couldnt move his neck to one side. I am glad he was rested towards the end of the season.

I would like big red as captain for a couple of years then Murph and Gibbs can take over.

Should we call Gibbs "Plutonic"?

well the front-runners are obviously Stevens and Whitnall...

i dont believe in throwing the duty onto Murphy so soon, and as Stevens and Whitnall are both guys who neither really stands out as a contender some other names might need to be thrown into the ring.

Fevola- had his chance, but sh*t all over it...still love the guy though.

Scotland- an Ex Magpie captaining Carlton= no thanks, not to mention his recent media coverage

Walker- he doesnt seem to be as vocal as i'd like a captain to be, but he's got a few years under his belt now and can start to lead by example on the field.

Thornton- once upon a time i considered him a chance, but after trying to go to Hawthorn, all chances of captain are gone

Waite- Son of a Carlton Legend, who is ready to burst the competition open...a possibility of at least Vice Captain.

Lappin- Skinny is great dont get me wrong, but he'll struggle for 22 games this year as he's starting to slip from everyone's starting 22...wont be captain.

Teague- again, he's got the experience, but he'll struggle to make the starting 22 most weeks so that puts him way out of contention.

Kouta- why not one more year? The Man might just be playing his final season, and i still think he's a great candidate for the leader of the club.

if i was to choose though, i'd go with Lance, although not as vocal as Stevens...I think that he's been 'this close' for a while now, and he deserves it for coming back with such determination through Carlton's lean years.

Nic

good on stevens for putting his hand up and willing to take on some leadership.

too many withing our club would rather sit back and lay blame rather than put their hand up and show some leadership.

PLEASE Nick please.... i was very bamboozled about this part in particular ' I lead in the way i play ' he is showing the young guys how to run to open space and opt out of packs thats about all i can think of

I think this thread is a joke. He is a class player and had 2 do it all himself in the second half of the season, on the back of some injuries. Get off his back and start supporting your genuine star players!

I think you'll find its Hollywood (and maybe one or two other posters) that have issues with Stevens. The rest of us think he's an excellent candidate for the job, we enjoy the way he plays and trains and believe he is a top liner at the club.

Hollywood, you've made your point that you hate Stevens, now move on and stop starting up these stupid posts that reharsh the same crap that you've said in 5 other posts. And for the record, geeze I can't wait till he proves you wrong this year. Enough with the bagging our players - there's enough supporters at other clubs doing that for you.

Stevens will peove all doubters if his abilities when the leash is taken off. Let him play loose in the midfield or on a forward flank.

Pagan (the 90;s man) has not utilised his potential. Stevens has great disposal and good decision making skills.

I think the captaincy is beyond him though.

He has to stan dout brfore he can lead

Murphy our man

Carlton 'supporters' (?) bagging our players over and over ad nauseum. That would never happen.

It has taken me 3 years, but in the words of moonface, i like the boy. Captaincy would bring out the best in him.Give it to him. Or Lance. Not fussed.

Stevens will have a great year this year

He should have the captaincy or a young rotating captaincy

Rotating the captaincy only devalues the honour and dilutes the quality of leadership.

Leave this dumb idea to the navel-gazers at St Kilda.

Lance, Stevo, Murph or even Kouta for one last season will do me.

I think they will give the captaincy to Lance. It is the easy option and god knows that our coaching panel likes taking the easy options.

It is much easier to put Lance as a loose man in defence.
It is much easier to make him captain as he has been at the club the longest.

Isn't the captaincy awarded these days on the basis of long service alone?

I thought so.

I would much prefer Stevens, but I have no doubt they will pick Lance as captain.

Any word on when the captain will be announced? Will it be before the Nab cup game Vs Essendon* ?

After the NAB cup IIRC.

Stevens is, by all reports, looking extremely fit at the moment and is having the best pre season he's had at Carlton so far.

I reckon with added support in the middle from a few of the younger guys, Stevo will become the damaging player he once was at Port.

Give him the captaincy and watch him dominate.
