Completely different set of circumstances. Sticks was 23, had played senior football for 5 years, was a KPP and backed up by strong leadership within the group.

Murphy is already my favourite player at Carlton and I've got no doubt he'll make a sensational captain in 4-5 years time.

Times change brad, the players in the competition are much younger now than in Sticks day.

Murph has captain written all over him, just give it to him and send a statement to the players and the supporters.

/me is sitting on the fence...

Let him settle down and show us an ininterrupted season.....there's always time ahead for Captaincy.....he really is just a kid.

IMO; he's under enough pressure from success starved supporters as it is.

...although I think I have both legs over on the captaincy side.

If a young player was to be handed the job I'd put forward AW as the most suitable candidate, closely followed by Kade.

Can i just why it is that Lance is not looked at favourably. He does have fantastic leadership skills, the kids seem to listen to him, he has a great footy brain, good awareness & most importantly..............BLEEDS Blue Blood!

What do we or the club have against him?

Has been paid a lot of money over his career but hasnt delivered, poor trainer, generally over his career has let himself go during the off season and hasnt been the role model on the track that many would have expected.

Last year he was ok but needs to prove himself to be consistent over a period of time.....and there is the question mark of how long he has left in the game. Would he still be capable of playing in 5 years time?

You wouldn't really like to combine Murphs captaincy with an unsuccesful year either. Wait till he is at fifty games and there is a solid team in plac.

Has failed to set the right example to his team mates.

The letter that came with the membership pack was signed off by Simpson, Murphy and Whitnall in that order. Could that be a sign of the way the Club is thinking?

If Murphy is given the captaincy, then he may as well retire now.

As I have mentioned before, if he was given the captaincy the target on his back would grow significantly and he may very well become burnt out mentally.

Give it to Stevens.

He's been in the system for around 9 years now. I reckon it'd be the best move to reignite his career.

I am a fan of the rotating captaincy....

No one deserves it yet...

If we share it around over a season or two, i can see the younger players learning quicker, and better under this method...

It is 12 months too early for Murph - he only has 13 games under his belt.

Kernahan was young but had 1 full year at Carlton and a few at Glenelg when chosen.

I think a temporary appointment should be made, whether it be Lappin or even Kouta again, then say to Waite, Murphy, Simmo, Fev, AW and even Setanta - you have one year to stake your claim for the captaincy.

THen you'd see who really wants and deserves it.

He will be captain eventually.

May as well be 2007 than 2009.

Sticks had some tough years in his first few years (1991 was the worst year for th club EVER at that time, bad from 1989).

Midfielder, does not need to kick 3 goals a game, just rack up his possessions, can share the load in a rotating midfield and run his guts out and lead ala Cousins. Perfect choice!

He'll be right.

Will Wallsy come back into the fold?

Carlton folk must forget all the blues.

I think a few posters here are getting a little caught up in the whole "fresh start" - "it's a new Carlton" vibe. Yes we all want a fresh start and some bold moves... but lets not get carried away here and hand a 12 and half game player all the pressure of lifting the club off the bottom.

I think a rotating captancy is just as bold a step forward without throwing the kid to the sharks. A leadership group consisting of Whitnal, Stevens, Lappin, Kouta, Fev, Murphy, Scotland and Simmo. And let each of them captain a couple of games throughout the year. Gives them a taste, plus it tests them when we decide to chose one captain in the future. Plus it strengthens the leadership skills of a number of players at the club. win win situation. Either that, or name Whitnal as captain, with Stevens, Murphy, Fev and Simo the VCs.

John Elliott wooed Pagan to Carlton for the 2003 season. Things turned sour. Within 12 months, Big Jack was gone and the Blues finished 15th with only four wins for Pagan. It would have been a bitter pill to swallow and a shock to the system and ego.

Can't even get his facts straight. Elliott lasted 12 months after he apointed Pagan?
