MATTHEW Lappin has implored Carlton to be bold and go with youth by selecting second-year midfielder Marc Murphy as captain.

And i too would fully support this move!

Please lets just settle down, the bloke has only played 13 or 12 games, let the bloke concentrate on footy for the next few years. I have no doubt he should be captain, but not just yet!

He really doesn't want Lance to get it.

I'd make Dick Pratt captain myself. We need a good blend of youth and experience. :P

hollywood and The Game are both right. Its too early for Murphy and Lappin doesn't want Whitnall as Captain.

Would love Murphy to get the captaincy this year.

If he had played every game last year he would have won the B&F, IMO.

Star.

Youth.

The article really highlighted that Lappo is anti Lance and Stevens getting the gig.

If we are going for the youth card, then I'd give it to Simmo before Murphy.

I don't think he is anti Stevo, just that he knows Lance has it in the bag. He was dirty that Lance got a nice big fat contract after years of mediocrity and he had to fight tooth and nail for his despite being our most consistent player in the years prior.

Completely different set of circumstances. Sticks was 23, had played senior football for 5 years, was a KPP and backed up by strong leadership within the group.

Murphy is already my favourite player at Carlton and I've got no doubt he'll make a sensational captain in 4-5 years time.

This concerns me.
Lappin should be pushing for himself as 1 of the leaders and not for an 18 years old with 10 games experience. Really does say something about our players mindset!

If all his interested in is for Red or Stevo or whoever "not" to get the job then ... gee I'm concerned about our players.

Nah, he just knows he hasn't/wont get the job.

Whitnall with get it, maybe with Stevo combined. But I'd love to see Murphy get it.

Just sends a statement out that our youth are our future.

I don't care much for his age.

Maybe the time is right for Murph now - continue the clean slate mindset.

Times change brad, the players in the competition are much younger now than in Sticks day.

Murph has captain written all over him, just give it to him and send a statement to the players and the supporters.

See you could look at it in a half empty way, or you could say that Lappin has been so impressed by Murphy in his short career that he feels the kid is ready and primed for the responsibility.

But that might be a half full way of looking at it...

I understand times change, I just dont want him burdened with the captaincy if we have another shit year, having to face the media all the time, as well as dealing with additional pressure he's going to face personally on field this season.

We were a strong club, both on and off field when Sticks was appointed. Maybe the expectation of success the club faced when Sticks was appointed was just as heavy a burden though.

Its not a case of me not believing he'll be a great captain, I just don't want to see him burnt out. Murphy will be with this club for the next 15 years, there's plenty of time for him to be captain.

Best idea is to just give it to Kouta for another year and then re-assess.

Hell no.

That's a 2002-2006 Carlton decision. We're a different club now. I want to see bullshit safety decisions like that go the way of the dodo.

The time is right for a new wave of leadership - more of the same is not what's required IMO.

Agree....Murphy's best trying to bulk himself up and stay on the park for now.
It still early days of rebuilding, take it easy with Murph, Gibbs etc and then hand them the job when we are on the serious climb up the ladder.
Not sure I wouldnt be telling Matthew Lappin to keep his views to himself...
