It was something small and innocuous that I heard on SEN last night at about 8.30ish.

They were talking about Victory and what not and Sheahan and his story in the Herald Sun.

A stupid woman by the name of Tina [I think that's what she said] comes on and says she was incensed about Sheahan's story.

You see Tina used to be an AFL fan, namely a Carlton supporter, but she decided against renewing her Carlton membership this year and instead opted for a Victory membership. Becuase Victory rocks and so does soccer blah, blah, flowering blah.

I don't know why, but her entire flowering attitude pissed me off no end.

Most would think good riddance to a crappy supporter but it really irked me and I am getting angry again just thinking about it.

Her name should personally never grace a Carlton membership AGAIN.

Did anyone else her?

End of venting my spleen.

YES I heard it and it too made me MAD and quite sad too.
The host (I think it was Beva) mentioned a couple of times to her that its still important for her to retain her support for Carlton and AFL but she ignored him.
After she hung up he repeated that its nice for people to be supporting the A-league and MV but they shouldn't forsake their AFL clubs.

I admire your passion Mish and DUC, but your logic is flawed.
How would you feel if this woman had instead said that she was buying a Bombers membership because they were going to be more successful ?
I would suggest a sh1tload worse.
There are always going to be people who fall away when times are tough.
It is because this is a sport, a pasttime, something to make us feel good about ourselves. We have a sh1tty week, we go to Carlton, scream our lungs out , watch our heroes do the impossible and life is grand again.

Thats the way it is supposed to be. Carlton have been unwatchable, embarrassing the last couple of years. But the faithful still follow them because there is always next week, and there is always a young kid coming along who can take a screamer, kick a mile, and dance round 10 opponents. I see that and you see that , but not everyone sees that.

But there is always the hope that in three years, Victory may not succeed, Carlton may be on top and this women will buy a Carlton Membership again. All is not lost.

I understand your point laser, but to dump your whole sport for another just because times are a little tough at the club you support really does seem quite shallow to me. After all in any competition there will always be a winner and a loser no matter what (we just happen to be the later currently - but not this year 8) )
Over here in the west I might start calling Fremantle supporters Tina's :-D

WOB's from WA Tommi - it's just the time difference. I'm actually up to my 1,000,000th post - it's just that it won't appear on the board until 2011.

And just to change the topic slightly - I reckon Big Jack should give Brittain the boot and look for a REAL coach with a game plan that has stood the test of September action.

How about we try and pinch Pagan from the Roos? Actually, better not, it might upset McKernan's B&F form.....

Footy has changed innit???

and so too has Football soccer style...

And we have troops fighting for democracy in Iraq today.... so that Tina can do what she likes...

Well the last bit is sarcasm... but why should someone not follow the Victory???... theyre getting 50k at the moment and if you ever go theyre not all wogs who dont like footy...

The landscape is changing and people will fall of the AFL and the Carlton bandwagon... and that is why this club needs to do things right.. and quick!!!

Lowe the chairman if of the Australian Football league has shown what can happen if you do things right,

Get used to it.. Football/Soccer is on the rise....

why shouldnt Tina go and be part of it???

It's not the fact that Tina went to support Victory - she could support Bin Laden for all I care.

It's the fact that she left my club, who needs every member they can get their hands on at the moment and decided to jump on another sporting bandwagon.

She didn't bat an eye when she mentioned that she used to have a Carlton membership and that she was now a Victory member.

She's a fickle supporter [sic] of the highest order.

CFC have no-one but themselves to blame for this and if some of you couldn't see this coming, well, what can one say anymore.

CFC have treated their members with contempt over the past few years and this is only the start, supporters aren't happy and haven't been for a while, the Carlton they new and "loved" has changed and unless like Synbad is saying :P , we get our act together NOW, things WILL get worse.

This is kinda my point. It is an escape, it is entertainment, it is supposed to be something that gives us joy, insipires us, enriches our lives. And when it does not do this, we lose something and some people weaken.
We all need heroes, we just want them to come from boys in blue.

DUC I think you are assuming that she can afford two memberships - perhaps she can't and enjoys going to Melbourne Victory more, so she gets behind them instead - her choice really.

I am on the opposite side though, Carlton Member for the last 19 years, go to most Victory games, but just don't see the value in getting a membership with them (that & I'm not allowed to)

I know of a few people that have not renewed their membership for certain reasons.

Pagan for one. The clubs constant drama's another. etc, etc, etc.

I don't aggree with their ways of sending a message to their club by not renewing.......................but i can understand it.

I'm a paid up and passionate Victory Memeber, but it's never gonna stop me from being a Carlton member. The blues, no matter how massive the world game gets in this country, will ALWAYS come first!

But i think overall, Victorians & football fans in general, have realised that there is plenty of room for both codes in this country.

And as for people like this Tina woman............................well i wonder if she was a Victory supporter last year when we finshed 2nd last - i'm thinking she wasn't!

Ryan 2000- I like the fact that the Blues come first...and I know you post many worthwhile posts on this site, but can I ask you a couple of questions about soccer (oh. sorry...it is called football now as i have been instructed to call it by sunrise news in the morning)

re: plenty of room for both codes
... so that would mean if you were a sponsor (let's say dan murphy's for point of example) and you saw 50,000 people going to soccer matches and 40,000 to carlton - maybe you would think of diverting sponsorship away from Carlton and to soccer.
Do you think this is a reasonable scenario?

All these people that say it is possible to support Australian Football - (am i still allowed to call it australian football ? or is that what we call soccer now?... ) and soccer in equal measure are fooling themselves.

yes they are played in summer vs winter but what about when you have kids - do you want them to play footy (australian footy) or soccer (or football as we now told to call it?)

Another thing that irks me is the labelling - eg -soccer (sorry!! football) is the so-called "beautiful game" but the most "beautiful" thing i have seen is a long range shot at goal. You get that in Aussie Rules too.. but from 60 metres out.

As far as I am concerned, the most "beautiful" thing i have seen in any football code is Jezza, sos's and buzz's marks...

I guess I must just be delusional and should immediately fall in line with the marketing gurus that tell me that soccer is "beautiful".

Oh that's right.. pele.. he dodged a few blokes in the 1970 world cup - that is supposed to be better than Jezza's mark.. I forgot. I will obey.

I think the difference between us and americans is that americans don't obey. They believe their culture is the best... did you watch the pomp and over the top cheesyness of the superbowl? and as far as they are concerned soccer is soccer. Football is american.

I am happy to buy memberships for both clubs (Mrs. Agro may veto that at finance sub-committee  ).

But if the AFL flower Carlton - I will only be buying one membership.
