Does anyone know if you can make money from registering trademarks?

If so, Carlton should trademark the phrase "embattled club", seeing as how it is used so often by the media!

I was actually thinking about a similar thing recently. It occurred to me that Cricket Australia has memorabilia for everything - Warne's walk from the MCG, McGrath from the SCG, Amazing Adelaide, Ashes Glory etc etc.

My question is - is Carlton unable to provide similar products because this sort of thing comes under the jurisdiction of the AFL? For example, would we be forbidden to produce a limited edition 500 prints of say a framed photo set called 'Young Guns' with Murph, Gibbs, Walker and Simmo or something along those lines? Again, this sort of thing is small fish (while beneficial) and we need to look at bigger initiatives to provide income.

This may be a completely stupid idea but was one that just came to me. Melbourne University is so close to MC Labour Park it is possible that we could somehow tap into the potential of students there. Possibly the club could invest in some housing close to Melbourne University and rent these houses out to students with possible discounts associated with Carlton memberships? That way we are appealing to a demographic that is important to the football club who are at a stage financially when they are looking for any advantage they can get. A student living independently may be unable to afford a membership, however, if a package was available that coincided with their accommodation they may be able to do this. Whether this would be feasible in terms of profit versus cost I'm not sure?

Also, how about a deal with Connex? Cheaper public transport tickets for Carlton members (either on game days or all the time). Would foreseeably increase commuters for Connex, bring revenue for the club via the deal and an added bonus for members to sign up. Also, could generate some positive publicity if we could get associated with an environmental group highlighting our awareness and support against global warming (such a hot topic at the moment).

Heres a couple mostly around a fightback theme and I think thats probably a concept thats got some legs, as were all very very sick of the shit were in and I think most past and present CFC folk would not be averse to a $20-40 donation especially if they were getting something for it soooo.......

1) Probably one Lauraine Diggins can look after - A print (poster) for the masses or a couple of special prints that can go for a little more - Title "Rebirth of the Blues" or something similar have all the past greats in the background current team eg youth in the foreground and maybe have them signed.

Get a marketing team to ring uo every past and present memeber flogging them at various prices - the cheapest version say $20-$40. Framed $80, Limited edition ones hand signed and so. Put the message accross that as well as a great piece its also a huge donation for the club

If staff are limited to do the selling use volunteers, have everything down so everyones consistent and says the right things.

If someone called me Id definitely buy one on the spot

2) Have membership recovery cells in each state. CFC comes up with a central strategy to recover past members, eg phone calls offer different packages for lapsed members etc etc. Each state then has a group of volunteers that then execute this strategy, obviously details like expenses need to be sorted but why not trial it and see what happens.

Example

"Hi im John from the CFC Qld chapter"

"We believe you were once a memeber but no longer"

"Were calling for all Qld CFC supporters to help us in our hour of need, we too were lapsed members, that mobilised and are attempting to get our club out of the pooh"

"You can help us by............(people should be able to donate, sign up buy merchandise, buy a past member package etc etc.

Going for sponsors is great but we have to get a lot smarter about generating new members, reactiviting old members and keeping current ones. Its our lifeblood. We also have to be flexible in our products, the old packages are limited and inflexible - time to be innovative.
