My memory of the time is that it was an out of salary cap arrangement with Sydney that caused his deregistration. Both Williams and carlton were penalised more than Sydney were. That always pissed me off.

Times have changed at Carlton....as Maclure says...."Jezza was sacked as Coach in 1990 after the side finished EIGHTH"......boggles the brain a bit now.

And Walls?.....coached us to a Flag in '87.....Finals in '88.....and then sacked in '89.....they were ruthless.

The Second Row from back after Hamill now confuses me is it Tony Lynn or Brent Heaver maybe thats heaver and lynn next to him ? Alan Thorpe is the next guy.

The Second Row after Bradley,i'm sure it's Adrian Whitehead.but yeh Matt Clape looks a bit like him

The front row before Barry Mitchell i always thought was Mark Cullen,the guy after Mitchell with the crue cut David Nicholson maybe?

Quite a few posters have been asking me to put up a story of the rebirth....the whole rethinking of Carlton 1992-96....
....this is a good report on Mark Maclure's thoughts who was a vital cog on the match committee at the time..
...desperate measures need people willing and able to make the tough decisions.

A magnificent Grand Final for Carlton on October 7-1972 vs Richmond at the MCG.

We finished top of the ladder that year with 18 wins, 3 losses and a draw.

In the Second Semi-Final at Waverley; we drew with Richmond; 8.13.61 to 8.13.61.

In the Second Semi Final Replay at the MCG; we were flogged by Richmond; 15.20.110 defeated Carlton; 9.15.69.

In that match; Kevin Sheedy kept sledging John Nicholls to "give it away....you're past it....too old"..
...it was Nick's first year as Captain Coach.

We then beat St.Kilda in the Prelim. at the MCG.....16.13.109 to 13.15.93.

So we met Richmond in the Grand Final, and kicked 8.4 to 5.4 in the first qtr.

In the second qtr; we kicked 10.2 to 5.5; and in the 3rd qtr. 7.3 to 5.6.

In the last qtr. we let them catch up a bit.....we only kicked 3 .1 to their 7.3.

Final Score: Carlton: 28.9.177-----Richmond: 22.18.150.

John Nicholls...Master Ruckman; played Percy Jones in the Ruck all day and stationed himself permanently
in the forward pocket next to Boyanich and Sheedy; and kicked 6 goals!.........Too Old, Sheeds?

Best on ground Robert Walls kicked 6 as well....and of course Jezza kicked 7 on Dick Clay.....What a fantastic day!

Late in the last qtr; Steven Hywood handballed to Wayne Walsh in the back pocket,
and Jezza appeared as if by magic with incredible speed and anticipation and "pinched" the ball out of their hands;
strolled in and kicked our Record Breaking Grand Final Goal.....No.28.

Talk about the cream on the top?.....we were beside ourselves with excitement.
Des Tuddenham was sitting next to us; and he said he'd never seen better football
than what Carlton played that memorable day.

Why thank you very much! ..... I'm so glad that the thread is creating some interest.

I thought it may bring back good positive memories for the older posters; while highlighting parts of our glorious past to the young
brigade who weren't there to live it; and to show the young posters that the wheel does turn eventually if you've got the right people running the Club.

I've still got a heap of stuff I've unearthed to put up hopefully before the season starts....we'll see what happens.

Just for a change.....some happy Carlton moments in the bathroom!

We have Deany and Harry and Mil after our big win against Geelong on Grand Final Day 1995.....followed by Robert Walls
(with his ankle iced up) and Bruce Doull; happy to relax after the huge Premiership win against Richmond in 1972.

It was the Grand Final of 1979.....Carlton vs Collingwood; and Jezza's first full season as Captain Coach.

Halfway through the second quarter and the Magpies were in control by 28 points.

Carlton was goal less....time for Jezza (and the Match Committee) to make some moves.

The first and telling move was Harmes from the back pocket to the centre; where he almost immediately
kicked our first goal at the 20 minute mark.

In time on of that second qtr; Jim Buckley and Ken Sheldon goaled, and then Maclure and Bomba Sheldon again goaled
to give us a one point lead....we never really looked back.

Famously; at the 25 minute mark of the last quarter; Harmes chased his own miskick downfield and swiped
the ball across to Sheldon in the goalsquare for the sealer.

Late in the last quarter in time on; Jezza went down with a bad ankle....we were just 4 points in front;
but we hung on for him to take the Flag by 5 points.

It was a very emotional Jezza who was carried around
the ground by his team mates.

In a bizarre twist the last goal of the game was scored by Allan "Butch" Edwards after a blatant mark was not awarded to Peter McConnville deep in the Carlton Backline very late in the last quarter, 27 years later Allan "Butch" Edwards son Jake would be drafted by Carlton in the 2005 National Draft.

Your memory is spot on mate.....McConville was disallowed a mark; allowing Rocky Wearmouth to grab the ball and handball
it to Edwards, who kicked Collingwood's 11th goal; leaving them to trail by four points at the 27 minute mark.

Jezza's replacement, Marcel Marcou then kicked a point, and the siren sounded, with us winning by 5 points.

P.S. I'll be putting up some terrific stuff on Harmesy soon....the very first Norm Smith Medal winner.
