Hmm, no reply as yet.

The "Game Plan" must be more complicated than I thought.

The reason I asked the question was an attempt to figure out where the players were failing to implement it, how to improve it, etc.

Rather than making generic statements like , the plan isn't working, the players don't stick to it, someone please define it so we can talk about it in a meaningful way.

Or is it so bleedingly obvious that my post isn't worth a reply?

Interesting reading this morning. Much as expected I suppose given everyone's posting histories but always interesting nonetheless. The funny thing is for the first time ever I've found myself agreeing with most of what's been written by most posters even though they're often at odds with one another.

Which doesn't make a lot of sense.

Or does it?

Is it just possible that there are a number of issues with the team at the moment and that it's the combination of those many factors that, when all contribute at the same time, make our footy club look ridiculous.

I agree about the cultural poison from our past and that the remaining players from those times are overpaid and deliver too little.

I agree we're one dimensional.

I also agree that trying to increase the complexity of the game plan with a group who can't seem to execute the basics of the current one is probably pointless.

I agree we need more performance based contracts.

I also agree they're hard things to implement.

I agree that Denis doesn't seem to have much influence over what happens on game day.

I also agree that it's next to impossible for a coach to have an influence on a game when your 22 players are incapable of following team rules and half of them struggle with basic skills when placed under pressure.

I agree we just don't have the cattle to be a serious contender.

I also agree that when we click we have a pretty good side.

All of the above leads me to wonder why it is that everyone seems to think our problems are down to any one particular thing.

There are a number of problems with the side at the moment and it seems to me that the capacity this side has to completely lose the plot every now and then might just be the result of a confluence of some of the above factors and others rather than any one particular thing.

Pagan out coached - yes and he probably allows it to happen..............our players struggle with his simple game plan - imagine if Pagan changes it around? Our players are dumb footballers. Dumb footballers who did not display any G&D on the weekend.

Don't think it's because they are dumb....but because Pagan takes the view that he's not going to shuffle around to just defend . I think he shuffles around for attack (and defence IF it's warranted....but if a player isn't doing what he's supposed to do defensively, Pagan won't support it by moving hi or other players around)

what's this mean???

If you watch RIchmond, they play an interesting stoppages game - they will have 3 players behind each stoppage and ring a ring rosy with handball to get the effective clearance. Now we were smashed in clearances on teh weekend, but I think your quote may refer to how Richmond get the ball out. Clearly we didn't listen - had too many on our defensive side of the clearances. Sure, that would work if we had control of the ball, but when we didnt, we lost from the clearances over and over again.

I think a few posters were talking about the 'shoot out' last week, pre-game, given our selection of a tall forward line. Well, tahts how it happened, and we lost convincingly. Very few effective or controlled clearances by the boys, and to me thats why we lost. What surprised me ws a lack of flooding on the day by Pagan, given he did it to slow down the Hawks, and Port, and Freo... but just didnt do it on the weekend. Perhaps he heard Demetriou?

BillC, Pagan's comments only reinforce my view the players are too dumb to play the way he wishes them too OR (i) they have the capacity but do not wish to carry out instructions OR (ii) they do not have the capacity to carry out his instructions.

Regardless of whether Denis' game plan is being followed....

"Colonel, I just have one final question before I put Airman O'Malley and Airman Rodriguez on the stand: If you gave an order that Private Santiago wasn't to be touched, and your orders are always followed, then why would Private Santiago be in danger? Why would it be necessary to transfer him off the base?"

...why is it always the Davies, Simpsons, McGraths, Normans etc, who are always made to be accountable? If Denis and the match committee do not have the balls to make tough decisions, they are just as much a part of the problem.

Great read this thread and so many good points raised by many.

I would like to pose a few questions .

Pagans Paddock , how does this vary to flooding ?? If its a Paddock at one end what is it at the other ?

No leadership, well we're stating the obvious here but rather than playing the same record, how do we fix this in the short term ?

Young Kids, If Pagan is so intent of putting in a process, and following this process is about being well deciplined, surely the young ones will learn this message easier, So if you can't teach a old dog new tricks, why aren't we teaching our young ones, now.

This season and our future, Who are we kidding did we honestly belive we were going to become world beaters overnight. We are three years on and IMO still another 2 years away from consistent finals football. Did you raelly think the pain was over already ??

Lets keep looking forward and it will happen.

If you build it they will come. Pagans Building and the success will come.
And in the process we will all have our 5 cents worth because we know better us granstand experts.

:D :D :D :D

Thats my 5 cents worth... Yeah !

How did Airman O`Malley and Airman Rodriguez 'touch' Private Santiago??

Compounding Pagan's plight is the simple fact that we have far too many players with fundamental skill deficiencies. Any gameplan is hard to implement without the necessary tools to do so, and despite Pagan's relatively simple MO of 'kicking long', we simply can't pull if off as far too many of our players can't hit targets.

Pagan's insistence on quick movement of the ball and long kicking, be it to space or a contest, is fine in theory (although perhaps relatively easy to combat - that's another story), but with only a few players of high enough skill level to carry through with the instructions, he's up against it. Turn-overs are hurting, rebound goals are far too plentiful against us, despite regularly playing a loose man in defence. When we do manage to work it forward, our kicks inside 50 are rarely to the advantage of our forwards, and if they are, our goalkicking - bar that of a few - is very suspect.

I think that's our largest single problem at the moment - lack of skill, and in particular, skill under pressure. It's not our only problem, of course, but we can argue and theorise ad infinitum about tactics and the like, but if Player A can't get it to Player B, it's a moot point.

The same way Richmond touched us on Saturday.

Somebody needs to hand out a few Code Reds!

Give me a run !!

I would at least go out and fight for the jumper - I'm not the most skilled but i am reasonably quick ,191 cm and 95kg and wouldn't take a backwards step (probably in the Prenda mould  )

I dont think half our players know how lucky they are to don the navy blue and that they should be fighting to keep the priviledge

Our fundamental problem...we have players for every position BUT NO-ONE that can hand out the code red!

maybe Hickmott was our last... (Big John where are you now)

...and we can't handle the truth

Do people think Denis wants it bombed to CHF when we dont have someone who can take a mark there?

Do people seriously think that Denis doesn't know that Lance can't take it in a pack?

The game plan isn't one of bombing it long to CHF - it is obvious that the players are not doing what they have been told to do.

some interesting reading - all of it is good stuff

on the subject of leadership - if we are not showing it on the field, regardless of any game plan..........Denis also needs to be accountable. Whai is he doing about it?

He is the man in charge and is surely not only responsible for a game plan but also for how it is carried out and the quality of the performance.

At a distance, I give Denis the benefit of the doubt on the quality of the leadership.

However, I would suggest this week he has the opportunity to start setting some examples of how important leadership is to the CFC (and its impact on any game plan).

Is BV Leigh Matthews?
