One of the advantages of Fri night footy is you also get quite a few neutral supporters.

Not sold on the dome yet. It's everyone's ground - refer the bloody dawks glee-club who were behind us on the wing - It's not yet ours.

And BTW, that exit from the wing, onto the city side trying to get onto the Bourke street walkway is a disgrace - it comes to a standstill all the time.

Reserving my position just at the moment.

just thought i would add a little info.

we played the dawks at TD last year and got about 45k from memory, so i wouldnt start claiming TD and the move as a success just yet.

When we play Fremantle at the MCG - lets see our attendance there and if we are getting the 40 - 50k plus crowds for games like that, people may claim the move a raving success but until then, claiming a game that in the past was already played at the TD is clutching at straws.

i should add i think its great the club has got over 32000 members considering the move, i thought their may have been abit of a revolt from some of the older members about leaving OO, so far it doesnt appear to be the case :D

Prez,

How can not be sure that the Telstra Dome move is a success? Where did we move from?
If you look closely at the original post, if the game where played at Optus Oval we would have had about 25,000 to 30,000 fewer people attend.
Last year the club decided to do the same thing and have the Carlton v Hawthorn game at TD rather than OO. Another success which probably cemented why we should move.

25,000 extra people at $15 a head = $375,000.

Thank you very much.

yeah - but the point is this game hasnt been played at OO for years - its been at the TD for the last few years - so i think its a moot point.

I will be interested in the games where we would have otherwise played at OO i.e. Fremantle, Port Adelaide etc.. before i declare the move a success.

we played our home game against the cats last year - so that we could compare but not against the dawks

please dont misunderstand me - im rapted wiht the move - i love OO but it is certainly alot easier to get to TD and the MCG, but its the games against fremantle, port adelaide and the like and how much we attendance we get for these games will show if the move was a success or not

If people didn't stop to fill their lungs with smoke then it would move a little better. Problem is everyone gathers to meet after the game and rather than waiting to the side they stand in the middle .

I don't think you can say TD is a success based on Friday's crowd. I think for a Carlton Hawthron game you'd fill OO, yes the capacity at TD is higher but so is the Break Even Point.

Supporters will go where their team is playing, if they don't then should you really be catering for their needs?

One thing I never understood about the people who complained about Waverley closing was that they said it takes the game away from people in the South East. I don't remember too many people saying lets go and see Waverley today. I go where the footy is. Much preferred going out to OO or MCG to see Carlton play, drive right past Waverley. I'd go to bendigo every week if thats where the Blues were playing.

How long since there's been a Friday night game at Optus?

Another good point camelboy. Another reason why we can't compare the two and say TD is a success. Friday night footy attracts a lot of neutral supporters and supporters who hang around after work to watch the game. It also puts a lot of families and country supporters off going.

Sunday Afternoon Game

Rd 16 against Fremantle (MCG)
Rd 18 against Richmond (MCG)
Rd 19 against Port Adelaide (MCG)
Rd 22 against North Melbourne (MCG)

now in red i will compare the games and where they where played last year.

Some of you people have got to be kidding. We are way behind Essendon* and Collingwood because we stayed at a ground which limited big crowds and limited games being shown in prime time television.

If it makes it, compare the last two times we played Hawthorn at Optus with the last two times we played them at TD.

I'll make it easy for you, 50,000 more people at TD with the games shown in prime time TV and high ratings. Keeps sponsers happy, keeps the coffers happy.

The point is though we can't play Friday night games at Optus, or any night games for that matter. These are where the TV dollars kick in. Forget the ground moving for a minute, anyone notice how many sponsors we've signed up this year. Even Blind Freddy can see that our stocks as a potential billboard have improved as a result of moving forward with our home ground negotiations.

now considering all that

only the games that we can judge that "are different from last year"

are

Rd 8 against Geelong - Friday Night game at TD
Rd 11 against Sydney - Saturday Afternoon at TD
Rd 12 against Brisbane - Saturday Night game at TD
Rd 16 against Fremantle - Sunday Afternoon at MCG
Rd 19 against Port Adelaice - Sunday Afternoon at MCG

now, when we get 50k plus to all of those game i will consider the move a success, every other game is basically where it was last year, and thats my point.

When you sit down and work it out, the move isnt all that fantastic for the club.

the move has been great for the club - sponsor wise

but declaring that the TD is a success becuase we got 49k in attendance is a little far fetched in my opinion.

we got about 45k or something like that last year when we where still based at OO

That's probably a fair call. However, it would be foolhardy to suggest that the signs are not good. We're getting decent crowds, sponsorship is up and most importantly membership is looking pretty healthy as well. Given there's still about 6 weeks or so to go for memberships I think at worst we'll post our 2nd best ever tally, and if all goes well we should post our best ever membership figures.

http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... 9309#39309

I know the Stay at Optus crowd, or at least their sympathisers, will suggest we should improve our membership figures, and they would be right to say that. However, to the best of my knowledge the club was expecting membership figures to take a small hit for a year or two before going gangbusters, a la Essendon*.

You're right Prez, it may be too early to declare the move a success, but I reckon there's enough indications to make it that that is the only claim the naysayers can have on the move. All the indications are looking very healthy IMO when you consider the three main areas of attendance, memberships and sponsors.

GO BLUES!!!
