I reckon he was starting to show some signs towards the end of this year. He's still only 19. In 18 months time I reckon he'll be ready to make his mark. He may not ever be the next Murphy/Gibbs/etc but he could well turn out to be an excellent 4th or 5th midfielder/wingman.

Simmo was similar but I reckon JR's first three games were better.

does that involve the following:
' relax Bret, in 12 months time you won't have to worry about Dennis'

either that or a jedi mind trick:

'you want to play for Carlton' :waves hand mysteriously:

Williams confirmed that Hawthorn did offer picks 24 and 33, and Carlton rejected it. This offer was obviously on the assumption that the Everett deal would go through.

I hope both remain at Carlton and are part of the 2008 finals campaign.

Hear hear.

Time to get some of the senior players and the Murphys etc to get into their ears and convince them that they are wanted and valued.

If they can be turned around, it could potentially be a signature moment for the Club.

Grant Williams on SEN indicated that JR's manager agreed with CFC asking price being fair and reasonable. Port wouldn't come to the party.

Didn't Smorgan say the same thing a couple of weeks ago?

From memory he said something like "Thornton is a true Carlton man etc.......".

I think Port's grab at Russell was designed to make us shy away from Gibbs. I hope people get in Jordan's ear and let him know Port didn't think he was worth Jack and was just a pawn in the game etc....

Either would I if he is a freebie in the PSD why trade when you get him for free, they only wanted to trade crap like Thurstans and baulked at trading picks....there are huge question marks on both Thornton and Russell as far as commitment goes under the present coaching structure.
You want players who want to play and bleed Navy Blue not players who have to be convinced to stay....let them go and get some players who really want to play AFL senior footy for Carlton...

"I'm not sure that we will have to draft Bret Thornton back. I think there is time now for us to speak with him, and speak with Jordan Russell," Smorgon said. "It is fair to say that we don't believe either player to be a lost cause. Carlton members and supporters have reasons to be optimistic that we will be using our first pick in the pre-season draft to acquire a new player, not retain one we already have.

"That is certainly our intention and one we can still look to because of the firm way we have conducted ourselves this week, the way Denis (Pagan) and his team have stuck to a plan."

Our situation with Russell is similar to the one St Kilda were in with Heath Black a few years ago.

From memory Black asked to be traded back to WA at the end of 2003 but a suitable trade couldn't be arranged. At the end of 2004 St Kilda were forced into a 3 way trade where they only got Fiora as compensation.

Hopefully Russell can improve significantly next year and we get some good compensation from either the Crows or the Power.

The Thornton situation is interesting as he only wanted to go to Hawthorn and rejected trades to other clubs such as Essendon*. Maybe Thornton isn't overly unhappy at Carlton and if we improve significantly next year (and Hawthorn have a poor year) he may be content to remain on our list. You'd think that if Thornton was desperate to leave he would have taken up the offer from Essendon*.
