That would be a players dream. Sign a one year contract for 450., have a good season then tell te Dawks "If you want me to sign, more I need 350-400." No club would be that stupid. Its a threat by the Dawks to pressure Calron.
Means to me that they are keen to deal. A good sign in my eyes

Agreed.

I reckon we can prize pick 6 away from 'em.

That means to re-pick him we'll have to pay through the roof then lose him again.

We're gonna get screwed over here.

I don;t care if Pagan is more brutal than Gengis Khan, Thornton is screwing us over. He has been shown to lack character in this episode. Very frustrating.

Thats just speculation, probably hear it on SEN rumour file. Big risk signing a guy up on that sort of money especially after he would have stiched his former club up. What is to say Thornton wouldn't want more than the $200-250k from 2008? The Hawks cannot bind him to the price for the second and third years without singing for it.

I know we're all very emotional about all this, but for the life of me, what has Hawthorn done wrong in all this?

They talked with a player coming out of contract to see if he was interesting in coming to play for them, just as all clubs have an obligation to do, and JUST AS WE WOULD EXPECT CARLTON TO DO WITH ANY OTHER PLAYERS COMING OUT OF CONTRACT THAT WE ARE INTERESTED IN.

They got some great deals in the past, good luck to them. Not their fault that North were idiots. WE ALL WISH CARLTON COULD HAVE ENGINEERED DEALS LIKE THAT.

They have offered Thornton $300k a year...if that's what they want to pay, and can afford to, good luck to them.

They have said that pick 6 is not on the table, as they should have said as a starting negotiating point, and JUST AS WE WOULD ALL WANT CARLTON TO DO.

We don't even know what they have offered as yet, or if they have even put a deal on the table, so we can't be critical of that.

Hawthorn have done nothing other than what they are obliged to do for the club and its members, nothing more, nothing less.

Thornton has chosen to leave, for whatever reasons... that's his choice. I don't see why Hawthorn is being vilified in all this. They will make an offer...Carlton will accept it or reject it, simple.

Righto...take aim

Carlton have rejected it, simple

Yes, I know that. Doesn't answer my question though.

Give us a short question and we will give you an answer. Keep it simple please.

Apologies if I have been convoluted, was simply trying to explain my thinking. Ok, simple question, what has Hawthorn done, that we at Carlton wouldn't expect our own club to do, that makes so many on here vilify them so ruthlessly? I just don't understand why people are so pissed off at Hawthorn. I would be delighted if Carlton was approaching things in the way Hawthorn is, and has been for the last few years.

Because we bleed Navy Blue and take it as an insult an so we should.Whether right or wrong. I do not think you hurt enough. Tell us all how we should react. Oh no Hawthorn want our player we will let them have him for nicks, hang on we will just check with the AFL if we can lay down for the hawks as we have for them.

We spend 3/4 of our time in this site vilifying our own club and some of us get upset if we pick on anyone else. Oh how sad we are.

I've been a paid up member since 1975, have been to most games since then. I bleed navy blue, and I am hurting like hell right now with the state of my Club.

But it doesn't help to let my emotions get in the way of things. We want to get the best out of this situation, vilifying Hawthorn doesn't help that, and clouds our thinking. If you let emotions get in the way when you are doing business, you are [REDACTED].

I'd rather we focused on what we have control over, of which we clearly have room for improvement.

Anyway, don't really want to get into an 'argument' about this, we are all on the same side. For me, given that he wants to leave, I just want to know how we can get the best outcome from this for the CFC.

Why do us fans, who have nothing to do with trade negotiations have to worry about our emotions clouding our thinking? It aint gonna prevent us from getting a good deal is it, we've got a right to be pissed off with the current situation, if there was no emotional attachment for us we wouldn't be bothered logging on here

Yep, fair point Megaman. I guess for me, I am not hear for that reason. I am here to have an intelligent discussion about the CFC, with those who are as passionate about the Club as I am, and often have more inside information than I do.

That's just my preference, my reason for being here. There are people on this site with a wealth of knowledge and good ideas, and I like to discuss these with those people. I am not here to get involved in emotional diatribe, although respect those who are.

I was just curious to ask what Hawthorn has done that was inappropriate, that's all.

I am over being screwed by other clubs, the AFL and anyone else who thinks they have the right to do so, just because we have the greatest history in the game. Its the way we want it - or go to hell.

Not pick 6 :-D

That's about it. Thornton is in the best 10 of the 2001 draft (even though he wasn't actually drafted) and we must command what he is worth.

Like Scott said they either put up something decent or try elsewhere. We won't be held to ransom when we have the top pick in the PSD.

Mate, my preferred scenario in all this is that Thornton sees the light and changes his mind. And if not, I'd love pick 6!!!

Would hate Essendon* to get him for nothing in the PSD though, quite possibly the WORST outcome.

I just posted this on another thread...Gerard Healy on 3AW reckons that Carlton may take this to the grievence tribunal. Does anyone know...
a. How this works?
b. What our grievence actually is???

The onus is on us to create an environment where players want to stay.

Sigried,

To answer your question, Hawthorn have done nothing in approaching Thornton and offering him a contact. No dramas there.

The reason why so many of us are pissed off at Hawthorn is they demand over the odds for whatever wash-up hack they want to offload (Hay; Spider) but have no intention of paying a fair price for Thornton.

Lets face it, Thornton doesn't want to be at the club. Everybody realises that now. So it stands to reason that the minute the Hawks put a fair deal on the table for him, we will jump at it and be glad to see the back of him.

Instead, we walked away from the trade table after 30 seconds after receiving an offer which Miller has been quoted as saying was laughable.

Why am I so pissed off at Hawthorn? cause they're cheap. And I f@#king hate cheap people.

Meanwhile, the AFL has created a new role during next week's player-exchange period by appointing QC Jack Rush as its mediator.

AFL general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said yesterday Rush, chairman of the league's grievance tribunal, would assist any clubs in reaching an arrangement for a player to be swapped.

"He has no power, but he will help the parties reach agreement if he can," Anderson said.

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,865 ... 11,00.html

Quote:
The AFL and players association have appointed a trade mediator, Jack Rush QC, whom they hope will facilitate negotiations that threaten to delay key trades.

Association operations manager Matt Finnis said yesterday the association hoped players' wishes would be respected in the often-heated five-day trade period.

"A player is required to consent to a trade," he said.

"We are always concerned that players are treated fairly by clubs, and when a player expresses a desire to get to a new club, that all reasonable steps are taken to ensure a fair and equitable trade.

"We would hope the emotion of any particular trade is put at the door, and that a trade can be looked at objectively ... with a view to achieving a reasonable result for all parties."

Rush, head of the AFL's grievance tribunal, will be used when all parties agree mediation is needed. His services can also be requested by single clubs, which would need the approval of football operations manager Adrian Anderson.

"As to whether or not the mediator will result in a definitive trade going through at any particular time remains to be seen," Finnis said.

The following has come from a person very close to the Thornton family.

Bret never wished to leave Carlton. A while back, talks began with regards to a new contract. Currently on $250,000, Bret wished to have this increased to $275,000 for 3 years.

Carlton's immediate response was $220,000 for 2 years. This may fit in with the grading system used for pay negotiatons, and this figure may simply be the bottom amount for the grade that he was currently at. It is fair enough to assume that this amount would have been increased up towards his true worth. Anyway, I digress.

Bret was rather diasppointed with the original offer, and talks stalled for some time. For whatever reason, Carlton did not speak to Bret or his manager in regards to any increased offer.

At this time Bret was still a Carlton man. He enjoyed Carlton, had many friends, and had NO problems with Pagan. He was not a material person. In fact, he recently bought himself a new car - a second-hand Magna. Clearly, money wasnt an issue.

However as time moved on Carlton still did not get back to Bret, even though (apparently) numerous calls were made to the club to continue talks.

Throughout this time a number of clubs heard of this and jumped at the opportunity. Hawthorn placed an offer of $1 million over 3 years towards his management. Others were offered, although I am not sure of the details.

By the time Carlton got back to him, it was too late. It seemed as though Bret was not happy with only being offered a two year contract, as well a a pay decrease.

He wanted to have the contract settled before he left on holiday. When he left, I do not know, but he did speak to the club on Friday telling them he wanted out. Various people have asked why he hasn't been in the media, or why he's only been speaking via phone. This is because he is currently in Fiji with his girlfriend. I do not know when he gets back. His manager has been given power of attorney to negotiate everything for him.

He wanted it all finalised before he left.

This person stressed that Bret was happy at Carlton and wished to stay. He was happy with Denis, even though he knew others didnt like his ways. However as it had seemed that Carlton had forgotten about him, he decided to find a new home.

The only new information this can really give is that Bret wished to negotiate with Carlton but they were never in contact with him. Why this is the case is up for you guys to discuss, but I think it may have come during the Pagangate scandal 5 or so weeks ago, and may have just been placed on the backburner.

As for the source, the person is close to Bret and his siblings, as he and his siblings were raised by a single mother.

Take this information with a grain of salt, but even though it does not cover the entire story, it brings to light the chain of events from Bret's perspective that made him wish to leave.

wouldnt suprise me one bit that the club [REDACTED] it up

personally, i dont blame T-bird for wanting to move on, especially if this is how he has been treated.

if he is determined to leave, then i want quality in the draft

but in the end i would prefer him to stay, but if he doesnt, picks 6 OR @#$%&! OFF
