Yeah, we're far better spending 600k on Denis. :P

I hope he has as much luck at Hawthorn as the last whinger and fair weather player who wanted out. Thanks for walking out on us in our time of need and not helping to put this club back where it wants to be.

We tell Hawthorn (and any other club) that unless we get a first round draft pick and/or a quality player then we will pick him up again in the PSD. Stiff sh&% whether Thornton likes it or not!!

This could work out well for us.

I think T-Bird and/or his manager realise how much we need him or a player like him and has therefore pushed up his price thinking we have no choice but to agree. Whether he thinks he deserves it or not isn't important.

According to his manager we've matched the Hawks offer but he wants out anyway.

I personally think that Thornton will be missed next year, but I am also glad to see him go if he does not want to be here. I hate how managers negotiate their players' contracts in the media. All of this should have been kept out of the public gaze, at least until now. I really wish the club had not caved and matched the Hawks offer. Here we had a chance to actually stick to our guns and put the long term future of the club ahead of an individual, now it just looks like that good players want to get away from the club as soon as possible.

At least now we have some wonderful opportunities for young kids to make their mark.

I really don't think that Thornton's departure will hurt us in the long run.

Depending on what we can get for him I agree. He's had to take the mantle of 1st defender while being slightly below that standard for mine, and while he's battled manfully he'd always have been released from that role were we able to find a true tall for down back.

Who said that they did 'cave'?

If Bret is out of contract, why do Hawthorn need to offer anything to Carlton?

For all the preachers of team loyalty and a growing spirit in the Carlton Football Club, it's good to see so many turn on this bloke so quickly. For the past three years he has had one of the hardest jobs in the AFL and I think he has performed admirably.

If this club wants to show it's supporters belief in itself, letting one of it's key players get away is not the right course of action.

Easy TBird has turned on the club and by extension has turned on every individual supporter. Hence that is why we turn on him. What do you expect? An applause. I support my team. Not the players who walk away no matter how difficult the environment is.

TBird was a nobody to me prior to playing for my club. He no longer wishes to play for my club so he is once again a nobody.

Correct 100% - it's about the club.

However, the club owes it to the players to set the right environment for them so that it avoids this happening.

The fact that we have matched Hawthorn's offer for Thornton yet he still wants to go to them says it all about our club.

WE ARE A SHAMBLES!!!

I don't believe Thornton's leaving for monetary reasons but it's worth keeping in mind that Fev was earning about $225K at the same age.

I already am shattered, he was one of my favourites and I do rate him quite highly, I think he has/had the potential to be our key backman even if others didn't agree, so his leaving came as a bit of shock.

However, he is a prick who has turned on our club when we needed him most, he wants to whore himself to Hawthorn then f*ck him.

Some of you in the Thornton thread are missing the point of the discussion. Carlton matched the money Hawthorn offered, but he still chose to leave. If he was money minded, he would have stayed because he has mates here.

But why did he choose to go when it's not certain he will get to the Hawks if the Hawks stuff up the trade?

Why is a young player like Bret Thornton leaving? Why is it rumoured that Jordan Russell wants out as well? If a second player leaves, is that coincidental?

A lot of you are saying that Thornton is overrated and some of you don't really care that he's moved on.

I ask you another question. What would your reaction be this time next year if it was Marc Murphy who wanted out and said he wanted a trade to Hawthorn? Marc is highly valued by the CFC, would be offered at least 200K and at this stage is worth that. If Hawthorn offered 250K and we MATCHED it but Murphy insisted on leaving - SURELY THERE IS AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM!

MarkNo3 - you say that Thornton has shown no loyalty and you've called him (amongst worse things) greedy. Well, what you think if Murphy decided to leave? Or Kennedy wanted to go back to WA? What's the problem?

HOW CAN IT BE MONEY IF WE OFFERED THE SAME AND HE STILL WANTED TO LEAVE?

Some of you have shown no logic at all; there is a deeper underlying problem amongst this.

Carlton is simply not a place that players want to stay at. Why? The Administration is poor, the coach is appalling, the training facilities are behind other clubs.

Players wanting to leave their club is quite rare; the bonding you get from playing with the same people for a long time is something you don't like losing. Usually players only leave for substantially more money or because they don't want to be there one reason or another.

The other question I pose is this. Why have so many players left the CFC since Denis got here?

If a second player decides to request a trade, will that be coincidental? Or are they greedy as well?

Very disappointing news. This is an outcome that is due to Pagans coaching style. There are probably other players feeling the same way.

Carlton needs to get a first round pick if possible for the loss of this player.

The excitement and emotions of disappointment are running at an incredible pace today (this thread). It took me ages to find the quote, but here it is

McKays Mistress wrote

Quote:
Many people claim that Thornton is a 2nd or 3rd backman. I absolutely hate this argument. In an ideal world, that may be the case. But he has never been a 2nd or 3rd backman and he won't be at Hawthorn.

Very few clubs have true KP backman - Glass, Rutten, Michael, Scarlett off the top of my head. Most others are forced to make do. Are Clement (190cms), Presti (193cms), Hudgton (191cms) that much bigger than him?? Or different to him??? No they're not. Hawthorn aren't after him to take the 3rd best forward, they are after him to play on the best forward. Therefore, we trade with that in mind. They want a KP backman, they have to pay the price for one.

So Hawks, you want Thornton? Minimum pick 6. If that's too much for you to pay - well get lost and stop wasting our time. KP backmen don't come cheap you know.

The Hawks set the standard with Thompson and Hay - we better not accept anything less.

(Having said all this - I will be absolutely shattered if he does end up going)

You are absolutely correct....we're in the new millenium and you don't need strength and fists alone, you need agility and height and speed.

Different era.

It's Pick 6, and that's cheap for a KP in today's game, or it's "see ya but I wouldn't want to be ya".

Just watch out for the salary cap issues Hawks are going to have with the number of Top 20 players they've got. We'll win in the end.

Lets stick up for the club.....he left for the money his prospective employer offered him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stick with the club. It's not about the individual.

Who else is supporting your theory by putting their hand up to leave?

Can't convict the club just yet your honour.
