Let's step back and look at the situation.

Let's look at the reasons why Thornton has decided to leave. It could be either the following (as these have been mooted publicly or on TC):

1) He wants more $$$
2) He wants a fresh start
3) He doesn't like the coach and since Pagan's been retained...
4) His teammates don't like him

1) This could be true. However, conflicting sources have said it's not about the money, that he would stay for less. Given interest from the Hawks, if he was a truly required player, then we would have paid him a fair contract.

2) He's been playing FB in a team that's lost a ridiculous number of games since he debuted in 2002. He has played above his weight division, played above expectations.

3) Why would a player with seemingly good character and a strong desire to succeed want to leave a club with the job half finished? Could it be the coach? There have been rumblings of player discontent, even amongst the young players.

4) Why would he go on an end of season trip with some of them if this were the case?

IMO it's either 1 or 3. The pro-Pagan camp will inevitably point the finger at Bret and say it's money. The anti-Pagan camp will say it's the coach. It is interesting to note that this problem only came up after the Board didn't fire Pagan.

I'd like to hear the real reasons, either through his manager or when Bret goes to Hawthorn (or whichever club he ends up at). I have no doubt that he will likely say something when he ends up at Hawthorn. And to be honest, why would anyone want to stay at Carlton, let alone come in the PSD?

I still think the senior players at least are not impressed at all with Pagan and I do not see him lasting 2007.

Should we be making Thornton out to be the bad guy?????? :?

This is pretty much a growing trend with Carlton really. Every year, a player wants to leave in less-than-friendly-circumstance and we start hating them.

I do hope he stays because we have invested quite a bit into this young defender.

Here's a scary thought....................is Marc Murphy or Josh Kennedy gonna be feeling the same way after we develop them for 3 or 4 seasons.

I guess my beef is not with us loosing Thornton (even though i do think he is a valued player for our future) but more so the club becoming less and less attractive for players to stay at.

I wonder in amongst all his thoughts he has considered that he's actually not that good.

He's hardly going to be the saviour of hawthorn's backline the same as he wasn't / isn't of ours.

I'd be stoked to get or engineer a pre-10 pick for him or welcome him to Essendon* in the PSD

Thornton and his management are running a risk by nominating a preferred club, particularly one with PSD Pick 6. Added to that with our Pick 1, Thornton management must be fairly confident that they can arrange a deal with Hawthorn so that he can move without too much fuss.

Look the bloke hates the coach. It's not money, his manager confirmed that...he wants a fresh start...in other words, he would have stayed if the coach had gone...

Thorton and Pick 17 for
Pick 6 and Pick 22

Correct.

Why do we think Carlton is a good place to be?

IS IT???

Some of you people need to think about whether Carlton is a good place to come to. Your answer cannot be "we're Carlton - everyone wants to come to Carlton". Quite simply, we're not. Our training facilities are crap, we have a playing group that seems to not want to play for the coach, we have a poor administration that undervalues players.

Get your blinkers off and think about whether Carlton is really an attractive place to go to?

Looks like another case of a player manager not getting his way and upping the ante by making statements to the press.

This is going to be a long week.

How about we go to Port and say ... pick 5 champs and you can have Russell and Thornton, now that would make me feel sooooo gooood ... not because we lost 2 youngsters but because I'm a pr**k with a heart of gold.

How about you stay off the drugs and stop posting crap?

Thorton and Pick 17 for
Pick 6 and Pick 22

it's 6 and 24 - priority has moved from pre 1st round to pre-2nd...hence adding 18 after first pick.

If Hawthorn only offers 24 + junk, then we could do a Veale-esque deal with the Bombers and trade Trent Sporn for pick 18 and a player, and then decline to trade Bret and forcing him into the PSD so the Bombers get him.

But the only difference between the Veale deal and the Thornton deal is we screw the bombers over and take him in the PSD 8)

The club should be getting in contact with Jim Wilson and telling him to go interview Gary Lyon about Thornton. Lyon is absolutely in love with Thornton - tell him about how if he was in the Sydney side he would be a star etc etc. Should all help to bump his trade value up.

I always wondered why Simpson was elevated to the leadership group and Thornton wasn't, maybe he just isn't a true team player.

So far everything is going according to plan. THornton's nominated to leave and says he's open to options. If no deal can be done we swallow our pride and offer him $325x3 years.

Trading for other players is a waste of time, we need picks. Gibbs and Sellar would be nice. The Bradley and Kernahan of 2006.

Please read the AFL article before posting...

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&s ... eid=302128

...and take it as gospel - we offered him the same as the Hawks - he wants a fresh start pure and simple. He's just one of many who are (in a players words) - "sick of losing"...and that's fair enough...we've all seen the frustration that Bret displays on the ground; and it has got to be hard having to be the Full Back in these times.

So Blues - do your thing. Get a great deal. I don't want a Hawthorn player. I want draft picks. I'll take this deal in a heartbeat.

Thornton and picks 17 and 19 to the Hawks
Pick 6 and 22 to the Blues

I can't see Hawks parting with pick 6 though - so what other options are there??

If he doesnt find a home during trade week he may realise his time is up. He wont be getting to the Hawks. Then he bends over and we re-sign him.

Saves our PSD1.
