Not out of the question I guess, but I doubt it. Sydney will argue that Spider is 32 and only played half the games this season, so the 9 spots between their first round pick and the Hawk's 2nd round pick is all he is worth. The Hawks will argue that Spider will win them a flag and what price can you put on that? It will be interesting to see who wins that little tussle.

For starters, Sydney have said they won't give up their first round pick. They will keep 15.

Duffman says a lot of things

I think they would for Spider + 24. It's nine spots in the draft in that 15-30 area of the draft where there are a lot of similar talents this year.

That is why i think Sydney get out of it lightly. Give away 9 spots in the draft only for which could be a similarly talented players.

I suppose it depends on how the Hawks really value Spider as opposed to the ambit claims they have made in public. They may view him as a sunk cost, and think that using him to upgrade their 2nd round pick to a 1st rounder (which may or may not get them Thornton) is better than losing Spider to the Saints in the PSD for nothing.

I think when it comes down to it Sydney's 1st round pick will be negoitable under the right conditions. I just think they don't one zero picks in the top 30.

That should mean, the more picks we have, the better. We should try for another top 20 pick or least another top 30 pick.

That hasn't been ruled out either. Finally the club have gotten onto the front foot.

They're certainly trying harder with the communications at the moment even if the spin is fairly transparent.

I wonder if the company who took on the PR contract just have some bloke sitting at a computer reading Talking Carlton to find out what the fans want to hear?

Well that's that I guess. I can't see the value in having come out and said that. They could have said "we won't be trading the no.1 pick" or "we won't be trading picks unless its for a deal too good to refuse" and it would have had the same effect of reassuring the nervous internet nellies.

Making an ironclad statement like that just means we have zero flexibility in trade week. Personally, I can't see how that's benefitial.

Mr PR dude - if you're reading this I'd like to hear that we're going to offer up a few okay players (say Houla type level) for three more top 30 picks.

6 picks in the top 30 and I'll be happy.

They may still be open to improving their picks firther NC...just might have come out and said what they said as a statement to say that we are going to use picks to build our squad. I'm sure if someone came to us with an offer that was going to improve our picks inside 20, they'd consider it.

Nightcrawler we should not have to kick in pick 19 in exchange for the Hawks pick 6 re Tbird.

If the Hawks want him bad enough then they should pay.

BTW the reason we have the TBirds of the world seeking $300k+ is because of silly past negotiations. Fancy Houla getting $300k or Waite high $200k. No wonder TBird wants a piece of the pie and compared to these two should be getting more.

TBird will get what he wants - either the expected money he's seeking & length of contract, or end up at the Dawks. It's as simple as that!!!

Rod I see where you coming from but the Hawks are pretty shrewed negotiators. It will be a delicate balancing act of how much they want Thornton (ie. how long are they prepared to wait for whoever they draft at 6 to come through) verus how much we need Leunberger. Realistically I think they need Thornton less than we need LB cause Thorp and Sellar are above average propects and should, in theory, come on quicker than your run-of-the-mill 17 year old KP player. But that's just my opinion.

If the spider trade went as I speculated then you can be sure that as opening positions they would offer only 15, and we would demand nothing less than 6. By the end of the week though a compromise would probably be reached. Then there will be further round of bargaining cause of course they would want pick 17 not 19, and we will prefer the opposite. I could live with either scenario to be honest.
