Is this going to be a common theme every time our players come up for a new contract we insult them so it ends up in the papers? Lappin, Campo, Whitnall, Kouta, the Fev trade fiasco and now these two, who the f#$% would want to play for our club?

Yes. 22nd in the AFL Jar.
We shouldnt tolerate that, should we?
Being reigning premiers with the best list in the AFL and all!

Lets sack the lazy bastard!!!!

And dont mention that Judd bloke to me. He couldnt make the top 30.

You're welcome to think Thornton is a superstar.

I just think he is a good player, that is all. I take offence at him (and others) taking their contract negotiations to the media.

If you are happy with that then fine.

If you are happy that he has one of the lowest tackle counts for any defender in the comp then more power to you. Just let him go, no need to work on that at all.

If Thornton is still playing KPP in 3 years for Carlton we will still be on the bottom of the ladder.

Everyone plays their contract negotiations though the media. It's smart business. It's about putting yourself out there to get the best deal and forcing the incumbent club to match other club's offers. I'm sure there are clubs out there that would offer Thornton a 3 year deal at $300,000 per year. and given our defence we can't really be losing those kinds of players.

Fish is a good prospect when he learns how to kick and manages to get out onto the ground on a regular basis. How many games has he played in the last 2 years anyone know ?

I rate Fisher highly. He is just about the best overhead mark in the comp.Name me 5 guys better than him in this area.

OK I will play. How about Brett Burton, Luke McPharlin, Adam Hunter, Leo Barry and Matthew Richardson? Or if you don't like those there is Daniel Bradshaw, Nathan Thompson, Nick Riewoldt, Josh Fraser or Brad Johnson. That is 10. What do I win? ;)

Probably none for his size though. Makes him a very dangerous 3rd tall (once his kicking improves........hopefully), especially if we very get a decent running midfield.

Bollocks nothing. You obviously are very naive or don't read papers. It's one of the best marketing tools. One of the oldeest tracks used by players and managers. Most players have very little intention of changing clubs but they use the media to bump up their market value by fielding better offers from other clubs. Means the incumbent club has to match it, or at least go close. If you were in the same boat you'd do the same thing.

They do if they're not happy with their offer. See Franklin and Lucas.

TWIGHLIGHT ZONE STUFF, this thread

He have done nothing to foster a culture that would give Thornton or Fisher a reason to stick around. That Whitnall and Kouta earn more, were captains and the other likely to become Captain is laughable.

I'm praying for our sake that there's a bit of Carlton sentiment in Thornton and Fisher, because there's no way I can see Carlton as a company worth working for.

We're put out as supporters..... but there's only so much shit we can heap on our employees before some of them want out.

And how do you know he was unhappy with his offer ? Maybe the Saints gave him reasonable compensation first-up.

Which player in the league has a ratio of 80 goals to 20 points?

Yeah, fair enough, but try and see the point before jumping up and down.

I have no drama with the "in the press" negotiation stuff

Carlton pretty much don't deserve any residual loyalty from these players.

We inflict an despotic fool on them as coach, we shit on their development by repeating the same jobs over and over, and then pay them the ultimate insult by promoting and overpaying old fat-cats while offering them peanuts.

I think we should thank our lucky stars if they re-sign at all, because we've given them every reason not to want to.

i don't ... but who is ever happy with the first offer? point is, we wouldn't know as he didn't go to the media... and a lot of players don't

I suspect we're all boxing at shadows .... hope so anyway. But agree we have to negotiate reasonable deals for all concerned.

Thornton would have to be - ongoing - the most demoralised backman in league footy - through very little fault of his own.

If I was him it's not just extra money I'd be looking for - it would be the chance to play in a functioning and occasionally winning team.

I'd love to see him stick it out but I'd not blame him for bailing if it was a good offer.

They'll get signed we don't need to worry about that. The point is why put the insulting offer on the table if you're going to cave anyway? We're pretending to play hardball, it's pathetic.

The thing I find interesting about all this and tend to side with Jarusa is that we have one guy who was pick 70 odd and yet to string a dozen games together and another guy who was given a go through the rookie list and has been part of the worst defence on the league for the last 4 years . Both trying to hold the club to ransom on contracts . How good do they think they are and if the club caves in whats going to happen in 3-4 years time when Eddie is offering Kennedy a million Murphy has just won the brownlow and Gibbs was runner up and has a 750k offer from Adelaide on the table.

they will be saying hey you give that skinny guy who cant play out the season 300k and that tantrum chucker who had to get the fat guy to cover for him 300k we must be worth a million each
