The fair weather supporters form a great deal of the 'support' for Sydney and brisbane and also for a fall off in our support.

These figures overall then might have a bearing on whether or not a major sponsor is attracted to a club

But what really counts is the % of supporters that buy a membership.

This is where Carlton's marketing dept is not performing.

I would be interested in the views of what any candidates for a new board later on in the year would have to say about the martketing of the club and how this fits in with their vision / plans for Carlton's future.

When looking at a survey like this, it's important to remember how people come to support a club in the first place. I would suggest that most people have decided which club they're going to support by the age of ten years-old.

Given that, I would expect our numbers in this survey to further reduce, as our performances over the past decade have been the worst in the competition. On top of that, our club has hardly been attractive to a young audience off the field either compared to our competitors.

Anyone who dismisses these numbers has their head in the sand.

Who did they survey? 1000 people in each state? What a load of crap. 12,000 is a minority and IMO this survey is waste of the paper its printed on.

SAVE THE TREES!!!! or RECYCLE THOUGH VISY SO Richard can invest more into Carlton :-D

Kangaroos convert over 10% of their supporters into members. I would say they are the best performing club on that list even though they are at the bottom. Essendon* converts 4 % of supporters into members and Carlton 5%.

Who should panic?

I guess the stats are used by the AFL, potential sponsors etc so, you can question the validity of the sample but you cant question the potential impact of the results.

Forgetting the numbers for a minute, if anecdotal schoolyard feedback is anything to go by, not many kids are choosing the blues. My 9yo and 5 yo sons are in the vast minority at their respective primary school and Kinder. I have personally ensured both barrack for the blues and bought them jnr memberships etc but I am sure that without my concentrated efforts they'd be going for the Scum/Filth/Aints by now!

My 9 yo Son reckons that 80-90% of kids at his primary school go for either Scum/Filth/Aints. Funny how kids are now going for the aints, when I was at school you'd get laughed at if you barracked for the aints......I guess that right is now reserved for kids like mine.

That little gem of research is not worth a crumpet. If you were to ask a cross section of Sydneysiders who they followed in the AFL, the standard answer would be the Swans even though most of them have never been to a game or have any interest in it.

One only needs to look at the crowds at interstate games when the Blues play there. I can tell you we almost outnumbered the Lions fans in round 13. In previous years even when the Lions were travelling well, we had a large proportion of crowd support. It is different in Perth and Adelaide with their huge Membership base. It is hard to get a ticket there.

Survey is just indicative of what people might consider their team, not necassarily what is their team. Nevertheless our numbers are still good, and we should use the scores to our advantage.

This is a national survey and if we still have in excess of 500,000 supporters nationally, then we should not find it as difficult as we have to attract a Corporate Sponsor(s) requiring a club with national support. There is a great pitch there for the taking, and I believe it wont be long, if the board get their act together.

Brizzy, how true. Our support in Brizzy well I just couldn't believe the phenomena, same goes with WA and SA, and when I use to live on the Gold Coast, every second supporter was a Carlton supporter. Just recently I was impressed by the number of Carlton jumpers worn at the Swans game in Sydney. Don't worry too much that there's a lack of support out there in terms of memberships, it refelects our darkest period in our history, on and off the field. We have a rich history, and these Carlton supporters surveyed are part of it, and feel strength in our history, if not our present situation. We still have cred in bragging rights. Whilst in our books 10 years is a long time between premierships, it's not as dark as it is for the Saints, Doggies, Tigers, Hawks, Demons, Magpies, Geelong and Freo.

I think that the darkest moments in our history are in the past, and we're riding the end of it now. We will improve, dollars are coming through the door. We only need for our board to promote the club in a positive light and attract major Corporate Sponsors to put the debt to bed. With on field success noone doubts that the surge of Carlton support will be stronger than ever, in the form of appreciation and celebration that we have closed the door on our darkest moment in 150 years.

The board should be using these figures to our advantage; all of them.

I had last Friday off to go to "Football Day" at my son's primary school, which included a "supporter's parade" at assembly. Although the club with the best support was certainly Essendon*, I reckon the Blues' supporters were on a par with the Pies in terms of the second-best supported club (and a long way ahead of the Saints)

Tommi, you are a legend!

...and surely there is a department or helpline that you can report your sister and B-i-l for cruelty to kids???

The awareness starts around 8-9 about premierships, most successful, etc.....you time your run perfectly!

Disgraceful that parents let kids decide which team they want to follow. My wife tried to tell my kids that they didnt have to follow carlton, not to listen to me and they could pick any team they wanted to. When they came to me and said:

"is that true dad...can I swap over to any team that I want to...can I follow the same team as my mates at school"

my answer was yes!!!...........BUT:

if you choose any team other than Carlton bear in mind that you wont get to go to the junior member's clinics, mostly because I wont be buying you a membership for those other teams. Also bear in mind that youd better be good mates with this kid at school because his dad will have to take you to the games. The only time you'll get to see them otherwise is when they play against Carlton. As for the whole jumper/scarf/merchandise category you'd have to ask Mum about that because I wont be spending my $$ on helping other clubs out!

But go ahead and choose any other team you like!!

I reckon I taught them a great life lesson on decision making and consequences!! Suffice to say both stayed True Blue, even the 5 YO.
